Chapter 11
“Enough!” Director Wang interrupted sternly, her gaze softening for a moment as she looked at Ji Wanqing.
It was just a fight over a fan, the sister couldn’t win and taught her brother a lesson, why was she being targeted by her own father and stepmother like this?
Director Wang patiently persuaded Ji Jian Guo and his wife, “Comrade Ji, this is a new society where we advocate gender equality, you can’t be so partial!”
The mediator also said, “Yes, it’s just a fan, why not bring it to the living room and let everyone enjoy it together? Hitting children is not acceptable.”
In the eyes of the street committee, parents hitting their daughter was a domestic matter.
The sister and brother fighting over something was also a domestic matter.
They couldn’t call the police and arrest people for domestic matters, they could only keep persuading and smoothing things over, trying to ease the situation and let both sides take a step back.
Looking at the street committee he had called, Ji Jian Guo was puzzled.
Why did no one believe him when he was telling the truth?
If he couldn’t send this little beast Ji Wanqing to jail today, wouldn’t he be beaten again once they left?
For some reason, Ji Jian Guo became cooperative, “Yes, yes, yes, I was just angry, I won’t hit the children anymore in the future.”
Director Wang nodded in satisfaction, “That’s right, a harmonious family brings prosperity.”
After a round of persuasion, the street committee’s mission was successfully completed, and they would have something real to write about in their report at the end of the month!
The neighbors finished watching the drama and their meals were almost done, so they left in groups, chatting and laughing.
Ji Wanqing thanked the neighbors for their righteous words, she stood at the door and saw the last person off before closing the door and turning back.
The sound of the door closing startled everyone in the room.
Just when Ji Jian Guo thought he was going to be beaten again, Ji Wanqing looked him up and down and said very calmly, “Go steam some coarse flour bread, let’s eat first.”
At the dinner table, the four members of the Ji family had only coarse flour bread in their bowls, plus a plate of pickles in front of them.
While Ji Wanqing was eating mushroom and chicken soup, and a bowl of crystal clear rice.
But at the table, no one dared to object.
The delicious aroma wafted through the room, Ji Xinbao couldn’t eat, he wanted to cry but dared not, he held the coarse flour bread and ate while drooling.
The three adults didn’t look as obviously hungry, but they were also suffering inside.
“It seems that Dad is not happy with me being the head of the family.” After finishing her meal and soup, Ji Wanqing finally spoke about tonight’s farce.
Ji Jian Guo couldn’t help but flinch.
He didn’t know if this little beast had learned the ancient torture technique, her body was clearly in pain, but there were no visible marks on the outside.
She was so insidious!
“That, it’s not that I’m not happy, it’s just…”
“Then you’re happy, right?” Ji Wanqing interrupted, her eyes threatening, she asked.
Ji Jian Guo had to swallow his words, “Happy, of course I’m happy, Wanqing is a high school student, you’re the one who should be in charge of things at home.”
“Dad, I’m so glad you can think this way.” The warning in her eyes dissipated, and the scene momentarily returned to a harmonious father-daughter relationship.
After all, Ji Jian Guo still had a salary of sixty-eight yuan a month, and when Ji Wanqing beat him and his wife, she always controlled her strength, making sure they only suffered soft tissue injuries, not bone fractures, which was a test of her strength.
Otherwise, a bone injury would take a hundred days to heal, and three months’ salary would be gone.
“Heh, heh, you’re happy, that’s all that matters.” Ji Jian Guo felt like he had eaten gall, it was bitter.
“But…” Before leaving the table, Ji Wanqing said with a hint of meaning, “I don’t know how the street committee people came so timely, it felt like they were timed to arrive.”
Ji Jian Guo’s back felt cold, he chuckled, “Maybe they were passing by and happened to see it.”
“Is that so?” Ji Wanqing didn’t say whether she believed it or not, she got up and poured herself a cup of honey water.
“But if you dare to do this again, then we’ll settle the old and new scores together.”
Ji Jian Guo’s heart skipped a beat, he secretly rejoiced at having escaped another disaster.
He screamed in his heart.
Ah, ah, ah! When will this little beast stop tormenting him and return to normal!!
After dinner, the family boiled water, washed dishes, and cleaned the room, Ji Wanqing sat on the sofa leisurely reading the newspaper.
While Ji Xinbao slipped into the kitchen and secretly drank the rest of Ji Wanqing’s chicken soup.
The delicious taste made his saliva flow, and he finished it in three or two gulps!
Not satisfied with that, Ji Xinbao licked the bottom of the bowl before reluctantly putting it down.
“My poor son, when have you ever eaten someone else’s leftovers!” Su Xiu’s eyes were swollen from crying these past two days.
Although she was a strong and competitive person, this little vixen Ji Wanqing was simply too evil, even her husband had been defeated, she really had no way to deal with her!
Ji Wanqing took a bath and went back to her room to rest.
The Ji family was enveloped in a low-pressure atmosphere.
Before going to bed, Ji Xiaorou hesitantly came to Ji Jian Guo and whispered, “Dad, do you feel like my sister has changed? She didn’t have so many tricks before, and she wasn’t so strong!”
How could Ji Jian Guo not know!
But she was his daughter after all, the scars from the beating a few days ago were still there, how could she have changed!
Ji Xiaorou said boldly, “I used to read ghost stories, there’s a spell called… soul possession. Dad, do you think maybe our real sister is dead, and this new one is a ghost, that’s why she’s so powerful?”
For some reason, a chill floated through the living room, Ji Jian Guo shivered, and quickly stopped her, “Don’t talk nonsense! Spreading feudal superstition will get you paraded through the streets and criticized!”
Ji Xiaorou shrank back, mumbling and not daring to say anything more.
But these words were firmly nailed into Ji Jian Guo’s heart.
He also felt that Ji Wanqing had changed, maybe she was possessed by a ghost, but how could he dare to talk nonsense about something that could get him beheaded!
The more he thought about it, the more scared he became.
Ji Jian Guo shivered and quickly went back to his room to sleep.
The night passed peacefully.
When Ji Wanqing got up, washed up, and looked in the mirror, she found that she had finally regained some color after eating well, drinking well, and not doing any housework these past few days.
On the other hand, the other four, under the double pressure of physical and mental strain, looked like they had stayed up for two nights and worked overtime for three days.
“Boil some water, I want to wash my face.” Ji Wanqing didn’t name anyone, Ji Xiaorou bit her lip and obediently got up to boil water for her.
Ji Wanqing gave Ji Xinbao fifty cents to buy buns, soy milk, and fried dough sticks.
She couldn’t eat much, so only one bun and half a fried dough stick were left.
Ji Xinbao was a loyal follower of whoever fed him, he didn’t mind the leftovers, he happily ate them and didn’t think about leaving any for his father, mother, or sister.
Ji Jian Guo and Su Xiu ate the leftover coarse flour bread from last night, luckily the factory canteen had paid for the food and tickets at the beginning of the month, if they had to eat sweet potatoes and coarse flour bread every day, he was afraid he wouldn’t be able to last a month.
Ji Jian Guo and Su Xiu went to work, Ji Xinbao went to school, and Ji Xiaorou, a high school graduate with no job, didn’t dare to stay at home, so she went out to meet her boyfriend, Chen, the captain of the Revolutionary Committee’s brother-in-law.
This was also why she hadn’t been assigned to the countryside even after graduating two or three years ago.
