When Doctor Li saw the two of them, he began preparing to clean up the wounds on the Wan family’s stepmother caused by the dog bite, but he furrowed his brows and asked, “What happened to these two?”
Old Tan and Wan Chunmei exchanged looks, but neither spoke.
After all, Little Black was their dog, and if they said anything, it might bring trouble to their doorstep.
Doctor Li glanced up at them, pointing at the stepmother’s injuries, and asked, “Did a dog bite her?”
Old Tan was about to respond when Old Man Chen suddenly stepped forward, saying, “Doctor Li, I know what happened. I know exactly what happened.”
Both Old Tan and Wan Chunmei looked up at him.
Old Man Chen, with a serious expression, said, “They encountered a wild dog on the road last night. One got bitten severely, and the other, well, happened to step on my hoe and hit his head.”
In just a few words, he explained the cause and effect of the injuries.
Although this had nothing to do with the truth, Doctor Li still believed him.
Who would have thought it was Old Tan’s dog that had bitten them?
That little black dog of theirs was only a few months old—biting probably wouldn’t have been very painful.
Old Tan and Wan Chunmei exchanged another glance, silently agreeing with Old Man Chen’s version.
As Doctor Li applied medicine to the Wan family’s stepmother, he said, “It’s getting late. You two should head back. I’ll keep an eye on them.”
“Alright, we’ll head out then.”
Old Tan nodded and left with Wan Chunmei and Old Man Chen.
On the way, Old Man Chen laughed and said, “These two really are unlucky—how did they get chased by a dog of all things?”
Old Tan chuckled and replied, “Yeah, but you know, it’s not just bad luck. They deserved it.”
“Exactly, they deserved it,” Wan Chunmei chimed in.
Old Man Chen, not knowing the full story, just laughed along.
The next morning.
Wan Chunmei and Old Tan couldn’t help but feel uneasy. They were still afraid that the Wan family’s stepmother would wake up and come after Little Black to settle the score.
Meanwhile, Little Black was acting as if nothing had happened the night before. It wagged its tail and lay in its bed, basking in the sunlight.
Today, Old Tan had specially prepared a bowl of chicken bone noodles for Little Black, using the bones left over from the pickled chicken.
“Little Black, come eat,” Old Tan called gently.
Little Black sniffed the air, slowly opened its eyes, and when it saw the bowl of chicken bone noodles, its small, bright eyes sparkled. It leapt up, wagging its tail as it ate happily.
It looked lively and adorable, completely shedding its fierce demeanor from the previous night.
Tan Yiliang couldn’t help but ask, “Father, why are you suddenly so good to Little Black?”
Old Tan smiled and patted Little Black’s fluffy head, saying, “This dog is really smart. From now on, we need to take good care of it.”
Tan Yiliang’s face lit up with joy, “I told you, Little Black isn’t like the other dogs. You all didn’t believe me.”
At that moment, Old Fourth and Old Fifth, both grinning, chimed in, “That’s right, Little Black is so well-behaved! It can even take us to school, and no one will dare bully us anymore!”
Wan Chunmei, listening to them, thought it made perfect sense, but she was still a bit concerned about how fierce Little Black had been.
As if it knew what they were thinking, Little Black suddenly looked up at Old Fourth and Old Fifth, narrowing its eyes in what seemed like a smile. It began chasing its own tail in circles.
It was lively and amusing.
This sight made everyone in the room laugh.
Wan Chunmei’s worries gradually faded away.
After the children finished breakfast and went on their way, Wan Chunmei and Old Tan headed out to Doctor Li’s house once again.
Of course, they weren’t there to check on the injuries of the two elders; they wanted to make sure the Wan family’s stepmother and Old Man Wan were still alive. If they were dead, they didn’t want to be dragged into the mess.
When they arrived, Doctor Li stood up and said, “You’re a bit late. Old Man Wan and his wife were taken home by their family.”
“Taken home?” Wan Chunmei asked in surprise, her voice low. “Did they say anything?”
Doctor Li slowly replied, “They didn’t say much. Old Man Wan and his wife were both injured, one from a head injury and the other from the shock. They couldn’t remember exactly what happened last night. They were both a bit dazed when they left. I had to tell their daughter that they were chased by wild dogs from the mountains.”
“Do you think they believe it?” Old Tan asked quickly.
Doctor Li shrugged and replied, “They were indeed bitten by wild dogs, so what’s there to believe or not believe?”
Hearing this, Old Tan and Wan Chunmei both sighed in relief.
