Jiang Ning’s tearful complaint made Sister Li furious.
Although it didn’t concern her family and she could have stayed silent, she couldn’t bear to listen anymore. Why should the victim apologize to the aggressor?
Sister Li said, “Aunt Wang, this is really unfair. Your grandson, Wang Xiaotian, was in the wrong first. Now that we know what happened, shouldn’t your family apologize instead of insisting that Young Jiang apologizes?”
“Just because Young Jiang has a good temper, does that mean she should be bullied? What kind of logic is that?”
“Hey, I heard from my son that Chief Wang’s child often pulls the pigtails of his female classmates.”
“When I heard Wang Xiaotian say he pressed that child Zhiqi underwater, I was shocked. If he’s like this at such a young age, what will he be like in the future?”
“I think I need to tell my son to stay away from the Wang family.”
The whispers and pointing around her made Grandma Wang turn red with embarrassment. She tried to defend herself, “There must be some misunderstanding. My child wouldn’t do such a thing. He’s still young and sometimes acts without thinking.”
A mocking look flashed in Jiang Ning’s eyes.
While saying it was a misunderstanding, she also claimed that her grandson was young and acted without thinking, making her words contradictory.
The meaningless confrontation was dragging on, and Jiang Ning turned to Huo Zhiqi, “Zhiqi, what do you want to do about this?”
“Sister Jiang, I’m fine,” Huo Zhiqi said, tugging at Jiang Ning’s clothes. Then, summoning his courage, he added, “But I want Wang Xiaotian to apologize to me.”
Jiang Ning felt a mix of disappointment and frustration at his initial response, but her eyebrows raised at his latter statement.
She had been worried that Zhiqi, living under someone else’s roof, might try to smooth things over to avoid offending the other party.
She hadn’t planned to let the matter rest so easily. She intended to discuss it with Shen Mo when they returned. Given Shen Mo’s concern for Zhiqi, he would likely address the issue with the Wang family properly.
“Did you hear that?” Jiang Ning looked at Wang Xiaotian, who was being held by Grandma Wang, “Come over and apologize to Zhiqi.”
Wang Xiaotian, who had never been hit before, felt a strange fear of Jiang Ning after the spanking.
When Jiang Ning spoke to him, he instinctively hid behind his grandmother.
“He’s just a child, why are you making him apologize?” Grandma Wang looked annoyed, her face dark and gloomy. But soon, she thought of something, and her expression brightened.
“Zhiqi is also part of our family. They are like brothers, and it’s normal for brothers to have little fights.”
“Apologize,” Jiang Ning’s eyes turned cold as she continued to look at Wang Xiaotian.
“Otherwise, I’ll tell your father, and it won’t be just a couple of spanks from me.”
Wang Xiaotian, who was already a bit afraid of Jiang Ning, became even more frightened when she mentioned his father.
He quickly apologized to Huo Zhiqi, “I’m sorry.”
After apologizing, Wang Xiaotian was led away by Grandma Wang, who was muttering angrily.
Sister Li sighed, “Ah, Grandma Wang is notoriously difficult to deal with in the compound.”
Then, she leaned closer to Jiang Ning and whispered, “I think Zhiqi will get scolded when he returns to Chief Wang’s house today.”
Every family loves their own child more, and Grandma Wang is really not someone easy to get along with.
Huo Zhiqi also lowered his head slightly, so Jiang Ning couldn’t see his face.
At first, Jiang Ning thought the child was too sensitive, lowering his head like a quail at the slightest teasing. But now she realized it was because the other party was so malicious.
Jiang Ning wasn’t a do-gooder, but she felt a special connection with this child.
After all, when she first arrived in the capital, it was this child who kept her company for a few days.
She was strong inside, but there were times when she felt lost. Facing a new world, new people, and unfamiliar relationships, if she had spent those days waiting for Shen Mo alone, she might have gone crazy.
Forget it, no need to think too much.
Jiang Ning took Zhiqi’s hand, “Come on, let’s go to my place. I’ll cook something delicious for you.”
*
When Shen Mo returned to the family compound after morning training, he noticed many people looking at him.
He and Jiang Ning had just moved to the family compound a few days ago, so it was normal for people to be curious about the new faces. He didn’t pay much attention to the gazes.
When he was just a few minutes away from home, someone blocked his path.
Shen Mo had been on many missions in recent years, and there was an inexplicable aura of blood around him.
Grandma Wang had been waiting for Shen Mo on purpose.
When she saw him, she was momentarily startled. Every time they met, she felt that this young man had even more presence than her son.
But what good was presence if he didn’t have a higher position than her son?
“Is Jiang Ning your wife?” she asked.
Hearing his wife’s name, Shen Mo stopped and looked at Grandma Wang with eagle-like eyes.
“Yes,” he replied calmly.
Grandma Wang didn’t have much interaction with Shen Mo, but seeing his strong build, she was sure he could keep his wife in line.
That little troublemaker Jiang Ning dared to talk back to an elder like her over a small matter, clearly because she hadn’t been disciplined enough.
Hmph, let’s see how Shen Mo deals with her when he hears what I have to say.
Then, with a tone of earnest advice, she said, “Young Shen, you need to control your wife. Women, if left unchecked, will become more and more presumptuous. Look, she’s only just arrived as a military dependent and already lacks basic manners, daring to talk back to an elder like me.”
“If you don’t discipline her properly, I’m afraid she’ll start talking back to you all the time. And with her looking like a vixen, who knows, she might even cheat on you in the future.”
Shen Mo had never had a good impression of this old lady from Chief Wang’s family. She was sharp-tongued and liked to say unpleasant things.
At first, she falsely accused Zhiqi of stealing money, causing a scene in front of him.
Later, it was discovered that she had misplaced the money somewhere in her own home.
Whether she forgot or hid it, that remained a mystery.
Shen Mo’s expression turned icy, “Does my wife’s character need your evaluation?”
Grandma Wang couldn’t detect the emotion in Shen Mo’s voice and thought he was taking her words to heart, “After all, you can’t judge a person by their appearance. Young Shen, I think you should be more cautious…”
“Grandma Wang,” Shen Mo interrupted her, his expression growing colder, his deep voice tinged with anger, “Jiang Ning is my wife. What you just said was an insult to my wife…”
He lifted his cold, piercing gaze and continued, “If I ever hear such insults about my wife’s reputation again, I won’t hesitate to send you to the police station.”
“What do you mean? Can’t you tell I’m trying to help you, to make you more cautious?” Grandma Wang’s eyes widened as she stared intently at Shen Mo, “Your wife looks like a vixen, isn’t she the type to easily attract men?”
Shen Mo suddenly reached out and grabbed Grandma Wang, “Let’s go to the police station now.”
Grandma Wang didn’t expect him to be serious and immediately started struggling, flailing her arms, “What are you doing? I’m not going!”
Shen Mo’s cold gaze swept over Grandma Wang, and he withdrew his hand, “This is a warning. If you slander my wife again, we’ll meet at the police station.”
Shen Mo turned and walked away, but after taking two steps, he stopped and looked back.
Shen Mo’s eyes were filled with indifference, and his voice was cold as he said, “Not to mention, my wife won’t look for another man. But if she ever does, it would be because I treated her poorly and disappointed her, so she chose someone else over me.”
With that, Shen Mo strode away, leaving Grandma Wang standing there, her face pale and flushed.
