Chapter 73: Special Research

Cheng Yubai furrowed his brows. After Qin Ruyan’s statement, he could guess that these two people had some unknown secrets. He didn’t dare to ask further. In the years they had known each other, they never inquired about each other’s private matters.

“Okay,” Cheng Yubai smiled, tilting his head slightly as he led the way. “Shall we go? To the medical lab?”

Qin Ruyan nodded, pushing her hat down further. Her lowered eyelashes trembled slightly.

They walked towards the medical lab one after another. There were fewer people around now, most of them had gone out for lunch.

After ten minutes, they reached a large building.

Cheng Yubai walked to the elevator and pressed the button. “This new medical lab was funded by Lu Jingchen. It has all kinds of equipment, even some that hospitals don’t have.”

He finished speaking and looked at Qin Ruyan without a trace of emotion.

Qin Ruyan simply hummed in response.

Cheng Yubai frowned. He thought Lu Jingchen funded the medical lab for Qin Ruyan? But her reaction was off. And last time at the cafe, she didn’t say much. Today, she came alone. Cheng Yubai seemed to have thought of something and took a deep breath.

“Xiao Yan’er, don’t tell me Lu Jingchen doesn’t know about you?” he muttered, his expression incredulous. But he couldn’t figure out why Lu Jingchen would invest so much money in the medical lab.

Qin Ruyan pondered for a moment. Just as the elevator arrived, she stepped in, leaving Cheng Yubai standing outside.

“I’m investigating my parents’ matter. He knows. I told him about my parents’ inconclusive research. Now you’re in charge.”

Qin Ruyan knew Lu Jingchen was always sharp. Last time the two of them saw Cheng Yubai together, if she didn’t say anything, he could still guess. It was better for her to be upfront. Although she deliberately concealed some details, what she said was true. Her parents’ previous research should have been about her case, although she only found out later.

She brushed it off casually. Cheng Yubai suddenly understood. “No wonder.”

No wonder Lu Jingchen said he was short of funds and asked him for help.

“If you don’t come in, the elevator will close.” Qin Ruyan kindly reminded him.

Cheng Yubai reacted and walked in. He pressed the floor button and stood to Qin Ruyan’s right. He glanced at her. Qin Ruyan’s brows were cold and emotionless, but he knew the calmer she appeared on the surface, the more turbulent her heart was.

He opened his mouth, but ultimately didn’t say anything.

Less than a minute later, the elevator arrived with a “ding.”

Stepping out of the elevator, they were greeted by a long corridor, empty and deserted. The entire floor was surrounded by glass, and the entire floor could be seen from the elevator.

Qin Ruyan considered herself a calm person, but she couldn’t help but be shocked.

“This floor, I’m guessing it has every kind of department?”

Cheng Yubai led the way, smiling. “This floor is basically used by me alone. Occasionally, when I need help from the teachers at Beijing University’s laboratory, they’ll come over. But a while back, Qin Shi also came here. He seemed to be asking the medical faculty about something.”

Qin Ruyan, who had been lost in thought, was startled. “You mean that Qin Shi from Qin Pharmaceutical?”

Cheng Yubai looked at her with amusement. “Who else could it be?”

She had been investigating this matter, using several forces. She had thoroughly investigated the International Criminal Police Organization, but there was no progress. She had also investigated many domestic sources, but there was no clue. But now, Lu Jingchen was involved, and her uncle’s family was also involved.

Qin Ruyan had a splitting headache. “Let’s draw blood first. I have something urgent to take care of and can’t be delayed too long.”

Cheng Yubai was taken aback for a moment, but quickly nodded and led her to a special glass door.

This room was unique. You couldn’t see inside from the outside, but you could see outside from inside. Qin Ruyan also noticed a sign on the glass door.

“Blood Research Center – Head: Cheng Yubai”

There was also a slogan posted on the door, stating that no one except Cheng Yubai could enter this laboratory.

Cheng Yubai reached out and pressed the password lock, then performed facial recognition before the door opened.

The two walked in. There were various medical devices inside. Qin Ruyan took a look and thought that perhaps all the departments on this floor combined didn’t have as much space as this laboratory.

Cheng Yubai walked to the experimental table. Qin Ruyan was still at the door. He turned his head and said, “Xiaoyan, come here, wash your hands and disinfect. You also need to wear a radiation protection suit.”

Qin Ruyan nodded and walked over. The two washed their hands and disinfected them with medical alcohol. Cheng Yubai handed her a radiation protection suit before speaking.

“The instruments here are interconnected. Even if you only turn on one, other instruments will also turn on simultaneously. To avoid radiation effects, it’s best to wear a radiation protection suit.”

Qin Ruyan hummed in agreement and slowly put on the radiation protection suit. She followed Cheng Yubai to an experimental table filled with test tubes.

She kicked a stool over with her foot, sat down on it, then rolled up her sleeves, her brows furrowed in indifference.

“Hurry up and draw.”

Cheng Yubai wanted to say more, but seeing her impatient expression, he shut his mouth. He was afraid of angering her. If she stopped investing in him, he wouldn’t have anyone to guide him when he encountered bottlenecks.

Qin Ruyan watched as Cheng Yubai put on sterile gloves and a sterile mask. He then took out alcohol, cotton swabs, iodine, a tourniquet, a blood collection needle, and five blood collection tubes.

She raised her eyes and glanced at him. Cheng Yubai paused in his actions. “What’s wrong?”

She shook her head. In the past, Cheng Yubai always drew three tubes of blood from her, but this time he drew five.

Qin Ruyan watched coldly as Cheng Yubai drew five tubes of blood. When he was finished, she reached into her pocket and took out a band-aid. She pulled off the cotton swab stick, used the cotton to press on the freshly drawn blood site, then quickly took the band-aid and applied it.

Cheng Yubai was a bit dumbfounded by her smooth and efficient movements, but he reacted quickly and smiled. “You’re still the same,” he said, then turned off the instrument and took Qin Ruyan’s blood to the experimental table.

Qin Ruyan took off her radiation suit, went to the door, put on her baseball cap, then turned back.

“No matter what Qin Shi and Lu Jingchen ask you about me, please keep this matter confidential.”

They had known each other for several years, and this was the first time she had spoken about this. Cheng Yubai knew her nature. She would swallow everything, even if it meant biting her tongue, and she didn’t want to cause anyone any trouble.

But there was no expression on her face, and her cold eyes stared at him, leaving him speechless.

Cheng Yubai nodded. Qin Ruyan’s lips curled into a slight smile. “Thank you. Please open the door for me.”

This laboratory required Cheng Yubai to personally operate the entry and exit.
