Chapter 64 : Did he understand?
As soon as Shen He returned home, he saw Su Ranran looking at him with sparkling eyes, as if she had been waiting for a savior.
“You’re finally back!” Su Ranran said happily, pulling him into the house.
Shen He raised an eyebrow and glanced at the soft, fair little hand holding his arm. “What’s the matter?”
He let her pull him inside, and his usually cold eyes softened unconsciously.
“I want you to help me look at a book. I don’t understand it,” Su Ranran said eagerly.
Shen He: …
For some reason, he had a feeling that the “book” she was talking about wasn’t something simple. After all, none of the books on her shelf were for leisure reading.
But what kind of book could make her this excited?
Without explaining further, Su Ranran directly pulled him into the room on the right. The room was simply furnished with a table and two stools, with no bed in sight.
This was her designated study room, although it hadn’t been fully renovated yet.
On the table, a row of neatly arranged books caught his eye, books that Su Ranran had carefully selected from her space. In the center of the desk lay a worn-out book, its pages spread open.
Su Ranran pulled him to sit down, handed him the book, and said, “This is it.”
The book in his hands was unexpectedly tattered, as if it could fall apart with the slightest mishandling.
The words on the pages were written with a brush, and the calligraphy appeared bold and powerful.
When Shen He saw the title on the cover, his eyes paused.
At this moment, Su Ranran sat down beside him, watching him eagerly, fully convinced that he could solve her confusion.
Shen He met her expectant gaze, hesitated for a moment, then began flipping through the book.
Although he was born in the countryside, his exceptional performance in the army had earned him a place in a military academy a few years ago, where his knowledge had significantly improved.
The book was written in traditional Chinese characters, arranged vertically, and read from back to front. It appeared complex, but it didn’t seem to be a challenge for him.
“Well? Do you understand it?” Su Ranran asked curiously.
She had graduated from university in her past life, and after her rebirth, she was even blessed by the space’s spring water. It shouldn’t be possible for her to not understand it at all yet, for some reason, the text completely baffled her.
“I’ll study it first,” Shen He replied without looking up, soon becoming engrossed in the book.
Su Ranran suddenly started questioning her own abilities.
So… he actually understands it?
Time passed, but Shen He remained silent, his intense focus making it clear that he not only understood the book but was deeply absorbed in it.
Su Ranran: …
Seeing that he wasn’t going to finish anytime soon, she decided not to disturb him and turned toward the kitchen.
She busied herself with cooking porridge and preparing the ingredients but didn’t open the pot just yet.
Su Ranran knew how to cook when she was living with the Shen family, but before her rebirth, her skills were just average, she could only manage to cook decently. After her rebirth, because she was pregnant, her mother-in-law didn’t allow her to cook at all, and she never had the chance to prepare a meal again.
Tonight’s meal was something Su Ranran had insisted on making herself.
After all, eating at the cafeteria every day wasn’t practical. She was pregnant, not disabled. Thanks to the water from her space, she had long overcome the initial morning sickness and no longer felt nauseous, even when smelling fish.
The island didn’t have much, but seafood was abundant. Fresh seafood could be easily bought at the fishing port, and it was cheap without the need for ration tickets.
That afternoon, with nothing to do, Su Ranran took a walk and brought back some fish and shrimp. She simply blanched the shrimp with ginger slices and served it with dipping sauce.
The sauce she used came from her space, making it exceptionally delicious.
As for the small sea fish, she made a pot of fish soup.
On the table, there was already a plate of green vegetables leftovers from the meal she had given away in the morning and another plate of kelp, a local specialty of the island, which she prepared as a cold kelp salad.
The meal was simple but made with fresh ingredients, and just looking at it was enough to make one’s mouth water.
However, even though dinner was ready, Shen He still hadn’t come out of the study.
Curious, Su Ranran tiptoed over to check and saw that Shen He was still staring at the book intently, completely absorbed.
Su Ranran: …
At that moment, she felt like she was watching a martial arts hero who had stumbled upon a legendary secret manual.
But… how could he understand it?
She didn’t get it, but she also didn’t want to disturb him, so she decided to take a shower first.
Since she was worried that Shen He might be sent out on a mission and wouldn’t be around to fetch water for her, she had asked him to place a water tank outside the shower room so she could manage on her own.
But this setup was only temporary. After the first three months of pregnancy, once the fetus was stable, she wouldn’t need to be so cautious anymore.
Just as she finished her shower, her stomach started growling.
Fortunately, Shen He finally came out of the study at that moment. However, his expression seemed a bit odd.
“What is it?” Su Ranran asked curiously. What exactly was written in that book?
“Eat first, I’ll tell you later,” Shen He said, glancing at her stomach, which had just made an untimely noise.
Su Ranran: …
Hearing the embarrassing rumble, she couldn’t help but feel a little awkward. In the end, she had to suppress her curiosity and focus on eating first.
Unlike the typical older men who sat and waited to be served, Shen He entered the kitchen and ladled a bowl of fish soup for her.
He knew her condition better than anyone and was aware that she could now eat fish without feeling nauseous.
Su Ranran, holding the bowl of soup, didn’t care about the heat, she blew on it and drank eagerly, as if finishing it quickly would let her hear what Shen He had to say about the mysterious book.
“Eat slowly,” he reminded her.
Shen He’s face showed a hint of helplessness, but he continued peeling shrimp for her in an orderly manner. The shrimp, which was as thick as a finger, seemed unusually obedient in his hands. With a simple pinch and peel, the whole piece of shrimp meat would slide out of the shell effortlessly.
Although he appeared unhurried, before long, a small pile of neatly peeled shrimp had accumulated in the bowl in front of Su Ranran.
This bowl was specially designated by him to hold shrimp and fish meat for her.
“That’s enough, I don’t want anymore,” Su Ranran quickly said, swallowing the shrimp meat in her mouth with some difficulty. Seeing that he was about to pass her more, she hurriedly covered the bowl with her hands. She was eager to finish eating quickly so she could hear what he had to say about the book.
Hearing her words, Shen He finally stopped peeling.
But what he did next made Su Ranran widen her eyes in surprise.
The man simply washed his hands and then began eating the shrimp, shell and all. He didn’t even bother peeling them.
It was the same with the fish.
He picked up a small fish and, without spitting out the bones, chewed and swallowed it whole.
Looking at the snow-white, neatly deboned fish meat in her own bowl, Su Ranran fell silent.
