Jiang Ning turned around to look at the person who called her.
The woman standing in front of her was someone she knew, the reborn protagonist of the book, Jiang Ting, her older sister.
Standing next to Jiang Ting was a young man wearing a western-style combined with traditional Chinese style suit. Jiang Ning guessed that this man was probably the male lead of the book.
Lin Yufei.
Seeing Jiang Ting, Jiang Ning couldn’t help but feel a sense of wonder. The world is truly small.
Just while shopping at the mall, she bumped into the male and female leads of the book.
She had thought that in this lifetime, she would never cross paths with Jiang Ting again. The world is so vast, and communication is not convenient these days. Even if they were both in the capital, it shouldn’t have been so easy to run into each other.
Qian Feng, who usually spoke little, had the task of carrying the bags today.
Seeing Jiang Ning finish paying, he collected all the items she had bought.
Jiang Ning had bought a lot of things. A store clerk, seeing the amount she had purchased, even gave her a large empty box to help her carry everything.
Qian Feng, holding a large box filled to the brim, was almost completely hidden behind it. Hearing someone call Jiang Ning, he knew it was someone she knew coming to chat. He quietly stood aside without disturbing them.
Jiang Ting, with a feigned look of surprise, said, “Sister, it really is you.”
Then she lifted her hand to loop through Lin Yufei’s arm, leaning against him in an affectionate manner, and said with a charming smile, “Yufei, let me introduce you. This is my younger sister, Jiang Ning.”
Although she was introducing them, she kept her eyes on Jiang Ning’s reaction.
She remembered from her previous life that Jiang Ning had confided in her during a sisterly chat that she had fallen in love with Lin Yufei at first sight, and then they had gotten together.
However, she didn’t notice that Lin Yufei’s gaze had been fixed on Jiang Ning the whole time.
A smug expression involuntarily appeared on Jiang Ting’s face. She wanted to see a look of envy in Jiang Ning’s eyes.
But soon she was disappointed. Jiang Ning only gave Lin Yufei a brief glance before shifting her gaze back to her.
On the surface, she was greeting them, but at the same time, she was subtly sizing up Jiang Ning.
Jiang Ning was wearing a knee-length dress in a light yellow color, with a leather belt cinching her waist, making it appear delicately slender. She no longer wore the dowdy clothes that hid her figure.
Jiang Ting felt a pang of jealousy and instinctively pinched her own waist. She then looked at Jiang Ning’s slender waist, which was barely an armful. It was only slightly thicker, but it didn’t matter. She tightened her grip on Lin Yufei’s arm and thought to herself that in her previous life, Jiang Ning’s good life had been hers.
No, it had always been hers. Jiang Ning had stolen the life that should have been hers, leaving her to suffer for a lifetime!
Jiang Ning wasn’t familiar with this reborn protagonist at all, but for some reason, her eyes sparkled as she looked at Jiang Ting.
She had already been upset that Jiang Ting had taken Shen Mo’s money for three years. Now that they had met, it was the perfect opportunity to get the money back.
Just as Jiang Ning was about to ask for the money, a hand appeared in front of her, wearing an imported watch. “Hello, my name is Lin Yufei.”
“Oh, hello.” Jiang Ning, maintaining her politeness, reached out and briefly touched his fingertips before quickly withdrawing her hand.
Lin Yufei rubbed his fingertips.
“Sister,” Jiang Ning called out to Jiang Ting with a red lip.
Hearing this, Jiang Ting’s spine involuntarily shivered. She met Jiang Ning’s mischievous gaze and stammered, “What… what is it?”
“The money my husband sent home over the past three years was all received by you, right? Shouldn’t you return the money to me?” Jiang Ning said with a smile.
“W-what money? I didn’t receive any money,” Jiang Ting denied.
Jiang Ning continued, “30 yuan a month, sent over three years. Including interest, I’m not asking for much. Just give me 1,500 yuan.”
“1,500 yuan? You’re extorting me!” Jiang Ting widened her eyes in surprise, then quickly reacted, “What money? What interest? Sister, don’t falsely accuse me.”
Jiang Ting instinctively glanced at Lin Yufei, who also looked at her with a puzzled expression.
Jiang Ting said, “Yufei, my sister is just joking.”
Jiang Ning knew she wouldn’t admit it. Since their meeting was so coincidental, she had mentioned it just to remind Jiang Ting. When she got the remittance receipts from Shen Mo, every single transaction was clearly recorded. Even if Jiang Ting denied it, the post office could verify the name of the recipient.
“Whether it’s a joke or not, Sister knows in her heart. I’m leaving now, Sister. We’ll meet again next time.” Jiang Ning had no interest in chatting with her; she just wanted to get back the over 1,000 yuan that Shen Mo had sent.
Jiang Ning turned to leave, and Qian Feng, who was carrying the large box, followed her. As he turned, Qian Feng caught sight of Lin Yufei and was somewhat surprised.
He greeted, “Company Commander Lin.”
Lin Yufei’s gaze fell on the man who greeted him, and after thinking for a moment, he remembered that the man was the orderly of Deputy Regiment Commander Shen from the military unit.
Since the man was just a general orderly, Lin Yufei simply nodded his chin in acknowledgment.
After the greeting, Qian Feng turned to follow Jiang Ning as they left.
The man turned too quickly for Jiang Ting to see his face clearly. Curious, she asked, “Yufei, do you know that man just now?”
Lin Yufei nodded his chin, “Yes, he’s the orderly of a deputy regiment commander in the military unit. I’ve seen him a few times.”
Then he remembered Jiang Ning’s earlier words, “Was what your sister said just now true?”
He was referring to the money matter.
Jiang Ting’s expression panicked for a moment but quickly regained her composure, “My sister was really just joking, Yufei. How could you not trust me?”
Lin Yufei fell silent, seemingly pondering the truthfulness of her words.
Jiang Ting didn’t want the conversation to cool down, so she steered it back to the man who had greeted Lin Yufei just now, “The man who greeted me just now is probably my sister’s husband.”
“Husband?” Lin Yufei was somewhat surprised.
The younger sister was prettier, slimmer, and fairer than the older sister.
He thought of Qian Feng again and shook his head, thinking that his taste wasn’t good.
Jiang Ting nodded, “Yes, my sister got married three years ago. When life in the countryside became unbearable, she came to the capital to find her husband.”
Lin Yufei’s doubts were dispelled. The salary of an orderly was only about thirty-six yuan a month, with some additional allowances that might make it a bit more. He didn’t believe that this orderly would send almost all of his salary to his wife.
Jiang Ning was lying.
Lin Yufei frowned; he disliked women who lied.
*
Just as Jiang Ning got into the jeep, she sneezed.
On the way back, Jiang Ning remembered that Qian Feng had greeted the male lead and thought to ask, “Do you know Lin Yufei?”
Qian Feng nodded, “Yes, he’s the Company Commander Lin from the Third Battalion of our unit. He recently took leave to go back to his hometown to meet his fiancée.”
While Jiang Ning was chatting earlier, Qian Feng had secretly glanced at Lin Yufei. Now, upon reflection, he realized that Lin Yufei’s fiancée was actually the older sister of his sister-in-law.
What a coincidence, it was as if coincidence itself had knocked on the door and walked right in.
Qian Feng, being straightforward, said, “Company Commander Lin might bring his fiancée to the capital and apply for a family courtyard. If that happens, Sister-in-law, you and your sister will be living in the same compound.”
Jiang Ning rested her head on her hand and looked out the window. She didn’t care if Jiang Ting would live in the same compound as her. In fact, if they did, it would be more convenient for her to get the money back.
A thousand yuan from this era was equivalent to tens of thousands in the future.
