Chapter 90 : I Like This Place
Before Zhang Xiaohua could feel relieved that Wang Chunmei had finally woken up, she heard this sentence.
“Mom, don’t you recognize me? I’m Xiaohua!”
“Wang Chunmei” looked around in horror at everything in front of her.
All the men and women were crowded into a large empty house. Both the men and women wore strange clothes and had unfamiliar hairstyles.
Is she in hell?
How else could she be seeing such a bizarre scene?
But why would she be going to hell? If anyone should go to hell, it should be that unfaithful man!
Thinking about the shameless words of that man, “Wang Chunmei” couldn’t help but feel a surge of hatred in her heart.
At that moment, a sharp pain struck her head, and “Wang Chunmei” couldn’t help but groan.
Then, a flood of memories that didn’t belong to her overwhelmed her mind.
“Mom! Are you okay?”
Seeing Wang Chunmei in great pain, Zhang Xiaohua became anxious.
“Auntie, help my mother.”
The person Zhang Xiaohua knew best here was Su Ranran, so she had to ask her for help once again.
Su Ranran, having just heard Wang Chunmei’s strange words, found it odd but didn’t refuse and approached Wang Chunmei’s wooden board.
At this point, several military wives had already gathered around the wooden board, asking her where she felt uncomfortable.
But “Wang Chunmei” had a terrible headache and couldn’t speak.
Zhong Juhua noticed that she was holding her head and guessed she might have a headache.
“Who brought Ertian oil? Try rubbing her forehead and temples.”
Hearing this, Su Ranran took out a box of Ertian oil from her backpack and handed it over.
“I brought it.”
Zhong Juhua took the Ertian oil and, with practiced hands, rubbed it on her temples and forehead.
Ertian oil was a miracle cure in this era of limited medical resources. Just rub it wherever discomfort was felt. Though it was unclear if the Ertian oil was truly effective, not long after rubbing it, Wang Chunmei’s frown finally relaxed.
“Chunmei, how do you feel?” Zhong Juhua asked with concern.
“Wang Chunmei,” who had just absorbed the new memories, realized that the original Wang Chunmei was gone, and somehow, she had become her.
She sifted through Wang Chunmei’s memories in her mind, feeling even more shocked.
What exactly is this place?
But her instinct urged her to suppress the shock. Wang Chunmei shook her head and replied, “It’s okay, thank you for your concern, sister-in-law.”
Hearing these composed words, the faces of the military wives present showed some surprise.
Wang Chunmei stiffened, then lowered her eyes, nervously clutching her clothes like Wang Chunmei would, trying to appear timid. The doubts in the eyes of the military wives faded.
For a moment, they actually had the illusion of seeing a daughter of a landlord from the old society. The inquiry in Su Ranran’s eyes didn’t go away.
Su Ranran felt that something was wrong with the Wang Chunmei in front of her.
Although the person was still the same, her gestures and even her words felt off.
Wang Chunmei’s nervousness wasn’t fake. How could she not be afraid when she found herself in such a strange place without explanation?
“Mom…” Zhang Xiaohua called out cautiously.
Perhaps because of the fear she had felt earlier, there was still apprehension in her eyes.
With her new memories, Wang Chunmei naturally recognized the little girl in front of her as her daughter.
Looking at her fearful eyes, she couldn’t help but sigh inwardly.
“Mom… Mom is fine.”
Hearing her soft voice, Zhang Xiaohua was stunned, as if she didn’t know the person in front of her.
Su Ranran, standing beside them, also felt more and more that something was wrong.
Obviously, it was the same person, but her movements and words felt strangely out of place.
However, Wang Chunmei didn’t show any expression on her face, only saying a few words of concern in an emotionless tone.
“When I went out, the wind blew the tiles off the roof and hit me on the head, so I fainted, but now I’m fine.”
Wang Chunmei initially struggled to speak, stumbling for a while before she reluctantly abandoned her usual literary habits. Her pauses and tone were very much like Wang Chunmei’s usual manner of speaking.
“Then I won’t bother you. You take a rest first. If you need anything, just call me.”
“Okay.”
Wang Chunmei still kept her eyes lowered, and though her expression remained neutral, there was still a hint of something off.
Su Ranran, sensing the oddness, retracted her gaze and stood up to leave. But Wang Chunmei’s strange behavior planted a seed of doubt in her heart.
The wind outside grew louder and louder, pounding against the reinforced doors and windows, making a deafening noise. The whole house seemed to be shaken by the force of the wind.
Everyone in the resettlement site was on edge. Those who had previously been worried about the crops in the fields now only hoped that the house would remain strong enough to withstand the typhoon.
Shen He, listening to the roaring sounds of the giant storm outside, wore a grave expression.
He had changed into a clean military uniform and looked composed, his posture upright. He led the soldiers in inspecting the doors and windows, checking if any had been loosened by the wind. They were prepared to quickly reinforce them with wooden boards if necessary.
At first, the reinforced doors and windows held up, but as the wind picked up, they began to shake.
Seeing that the doors and windows were on the verge of breaking, Shen He decisively ordered, “Use wooden boards to secure the doors and windows and ensure the wind doesn’t blow them open!”
“Yes!”
At his command, the soldiers quickly grabbed the wooden boards from the ground and used them to block the doors and windows, holding them tightly in place.
But none of them had ever encountered a level 18 typhoon before, and they had no idea just how terrifying the storm’s power could be.
Even with so many people blocking the boards, the wind continued to pound them with a deafening force. It seemed that the doors and windows would break any moment now.
Outside, the island was being torn apart by the violent storm, and the soldiers were desperately holding the door. It felt as though the storm had turned the island upside down.
The entire island was like a small boat in the sea, swaying dangerously in the powerful wind and massive waves.
The people in the resettlement site felt like a group of ants, struggling helplessly against the overwhelming disaster. At that moment, everyone felt lucky that they had come to the resettlement site, for otherwise they would be left without any protection.
As they looked at the figures of the soldiers, their bodies bracing the doors and windows, everyone couldn’t hold back their tears. They knew that once the doors and windows broke, the soldiers who were first to bear the brunt of the impact would undoubtedly be injured.
This resettlement site was the last point of refuge, and it housed men, women, the young, and the elderly.
Seeing the soldiers working tirelessly to hold the doors, the people inside the house couldn’t sit still any longer. They stepped forward one by one to help support the wooden boards.
“Comrade soldier, I’ll help too!”
“And me!”
“Let’s do it together!”
Before long, every door and window was crowded with people.
This scene of military and civilians working together to face the disaster wasn’t the first time Su Ranran had seen it, but it still moved her deeply.
Not to mention Wang Chunmei, who had just traveled from ancient times.
In her mind, during a disaster like this, soldiers would typically protect civilians by keeping them inside, never using their own bodies to shield defenseless civilians like these people in strange uniforms.
Seeing the unity in front of her left Wang Chunmei speechless.
Though this place was strange, she couldn’t help but feel a sense of affection for it.
