After the family exchanged pleasantries, Second Aunt Liu decided to temporarily stay at the Tan family’s home. Once her younger sister got married, she would go and settle scores with the couple who had wronged her.
Fortunately, the Tan family had recently built a new house.
The new house had a kitchen, a small side room, and three main rooms.
Little Qiyue stayed in the same room as Old Tan and Wan Chunmei, as well as Tan Liujin.
Tan Yiliang and his four brothers shared another room. Although the room was crowded with so many people, it was spacious enough, with two beds inside, so it wasn’t too uncomfortable.
The last room was for Tan Xiaomei, who lived there with two beds.
Once Tan Xiaomei got married, Tan Yiliang and Tan Sanyuan would move into this room.
Now that Second Aunt Liu had arrived, she stayed with Tan Xiaomei in her room.
The two sisters hadn’t seen each other in a long time, and they talked late into the night, only stopping when the roosters crowed.
The next morning, both of them were yawning, clearly having not had a good night’s sleep.
Old Tan smiled at them, placing two bowls of hot porridge on the table.
“Look at you two, both grown-ups, and still so chatty.”
Tan Xiaomei picked up Little Qiyue from the bed and sat her on her lap, feeding her porridge while smiling, “Big brother, it’s rare for me and Second Sister to be together, so naturally, we have endless things to talk about.”
Wan Chunmei walked over, placing several corn cakes on the table. “That’s right, it’s no big deal once in a while.”
“Your sister-in-law is right.” Second Aunt Liu nodded in agreement, holding Tan Liujin on her lap. She took a corn cake and placed it in his hand before asking, “Sister-in-law, do you have any flour at home?”
Wan Chunmei thought for a moment before replying, “Yes, we do. When Yiliang came back last time, he brought some with him.”
Second Aunt Liu smiled and said, “That’s great. You’ve been having porridge with pickles every morning. The children must be tired of it by now. How about I make some buns and steamed buns for you?”
As soon as those words were spoken, Tan Yiliang and the fourth and fifth brothers, who had just entered, stared at her with shining eyes.
Old Tan and Wan Chunmei were both from Pingyang County and weren’t very good at making steamed buns or buns. They usually ate rice and thin porridge.
Upon hearing that there would be steamed buns and buns, everyone was thrilled.
Wan Chunmei, while serving the porridge, asked, “Sister, when did you learn how to make buns and steamed buns?”
Second Aunt Liu smiled and answered, “Not long ago, when I was helping with deliveries in the neighboring county. I stayed there for over a month and learned from the local woman who had great cooking skills.”
“That woman is from the capital and is a fantastic cook. I learned a lot of dishes in just a few days with her.”
Wan Chunmei immediately looked up. “Capital cuisine? How is it different from our local food?”
Second Aunt Liu smiled lightly and replied, “It’s not too different, it just looks nicer. When I have time, I’ll make a few dishes for you to see.”
Wan Chunmei nodded. “That’s fine.”
“Second Aunt, Second Aunt!” Tan Siwen and Tan Wuguan’s eyes were wide, staring at Second Aunt Liu. “Can you make the buns and steamed buns first?”
The two boys were clearly craving food.
Second Aunt Liu reached out and gave each of them a playful tap on the nose, saying, “Alright, alright, Second Aunt will make them for you.”
“Wow! Second Aunt is the best! The best!”
Tan Siwen and Tan Wuguan squinted their eyes, laughing happily.
“Alright, hurry up and eat your breakfast.” Wan Chunmei called out.
The two boys quickly buried their heads in their bowls, gulping down the porridge.
Wan Chunmei stood up and brought several boiled eggs from the pot, placing them on the table. “Here, take a few eggs, eat more.”
Tan Yiliang and the fourth and fifth brothers grabbed several eggs and put them in their pockets, planning to eat them later.
Only Tan Sanyuan took one egg slowly, peeled it in silence, and then gently placed the white, tender egg white in Little Qiyue’s chubby little hand.
Little Qiyue couldn’t hold the egg with just one hand, so she immediately grabbed it with both hands, happily eating away.
Tan Sanyuan wiped his hands and continued eating his porridge, but his gaze kept drifting towards Little Qiyue.
Every time her egg was about to fall from her mouth, he quickly reached out to catch it and silently wiped the corners of her lips.
