After lunch, the snow fell heavier and heavier.
After washing the pots and bowls, Li Zhouzhou stewed the bone soup on the stove, wiped his hands and went to the backyard, where he first dug up the cabbages from the field. The frozen cabbages could not be put into a warm place immediately, otherwise the leaves would be damaged.
Put the cabbages one by one in the woodshed, against the corner of the wall, away from the firewood, and let them dry first.
After harvesting the cabbages in the field, a thick layer of snow fell on the roofs of the pigpen and chicken coop. Li Zhouzhou took a broom and swept it roughly to prevent it from collapsing.
After finishing the work, he went to the woodshed and picked up some cabbages whose leaves were so frozen that they were in bad condition. They were used to pickle sauerkraut, and they also had to knead the dough and ferment it. After a lot of busy work, the sauerkraut had just been piled up and the lid was put on the jar. It was getting dark, and Li Zhouzhou started to cook.
Gu Zhao was reading in the room. When the light dimmed, he knew it was time to cook. He stretched and rubbed his hands. He had said that he didn’t need to heat the kang during the day, but the kang in the room was heated, and he felt cold sitting at the desk all afternoon.
The first winter in ancient times was not something that could be overcome with willpower. It was very cold.
Gu Zhao didn’t dare to be careless, if he got sick it would be terrible. Whether in ancient times or modern times, seeing a doctor is troublesome and expensive, not to mention the current medical level. A cold can be life-threatening.
He spent about five hours a day reading, summarizing and trying to do exercises. In the morning and evening when the light was not good, Gu Zhao would recite and silently read what he had read the previous day.
It was only half a month that I really started to study. When I was at Gu’s house, Gu Zhao copied a few lines of books, and Li Guihua would yell in the yard, saying that the water was gone, and then scolding Tiedan. They were all idle and only knew how to stay at home and couldn’t help at all.
After that, they prepared for the wedding. Although Gu Zhao was marrying into the family, he still had to prepare a dowry. When it came to preparing the dowry, Li Guihua had many excuses. She would refuse if it was expensive, and if it was really impossible to refuse, she would choose the lowest quality.
The eldest and second aunts came to help, people were coming in and out of the house sewing quilts and making clothes, Li Guihua made some tea, sat there eating melon seeds and chatting, and talked for the whole afternoon. There was no peace and quiet.
When Gu Zhao was copying the book, he only focused on copying the content and did not read its meaning carefully.
After arriving at the Li family and living with Zhou Zhou, Gu Zhao’s soul finally found a home and felt at peace.
This is his home.
After stretching his body after sitting for the whole afternoon, Gu Zhao headed for the kitchen. The snow outside had stopped. When he entered the kitchen, he saw Zhou Zhou rolling out dough.
”Want to eat pancakes today?”
When Li Zhouzhou heard his husband’s voice, his eyes lit up, and he continued to work, saying, “We’ll eat the steamed cakes with pickled vegetables later. Husband, please sit in front of the stove and warm yourself by the fire, or you’ll catch a cold.”
”Okay.” Gu Zhao replied obediently, “Wife, you can roll this pancake bigger, fold it in half, and eat it with vegetables after steaming it. This way, you can hold the pancake in one hand and drink the soup with the other hand.”
Otherwise, you can just use the bread and chopsticks to eat the dishes, and then drink the soup after you are done, as bone soup cools down quickly.
Li Zhouzhou followed her husband’s instructions and rolled the pancake a little thinner, folded it in half, and placed it on the steamer covered with linen cloth. The pancake was crescent-shaped, which saved space.
”Husband, this is a good idea.” Li Zhouzhou praised.
Gu Zhao smiled shamelessly and asked for praise, “What reward will Zhou Zhou give?”
Without waiting for Zhou Zhou to answer, Gu Zhao leaned over, quickly kissed his wife, and then pretended to be obedient and said, “I took the reward myself. I’m going to burn firewood. Be good and don’t bother you.”
Li Zhouzhou blushed, luckily there were only two people in the kitchen.
There’s nothing I can do about my husband.
The bone soup in the front stove had been simmering for more than half an hour and had already turned milky white. Li Zhouzhou took the iron pot and placed it on the back stove. The residual heat from under the stove heated the soup. Then he started to steam the pancakes on the high fire in the front stove.
He then took out a few cabbage stalks from the sauerkraut jar, squeezed out the water, and cut them into dices.
Gu Zhao sat in front of the stove and peeled the garlic, then handed it to his wife. Li Zhouzhou flattened it with the back of a knife and chopped it into small pieces. After a while, the pancakes were steamed, and a little lard and minced meat were stir-fried with minced garlic and pickled cabbage. It was fragrant and delicious.
…It would be more fragrant if you add some chili.
There is no corn in this world, let alone peppers. Gu Zhao recalled the memory of his original body. Ten years later, peppers did not appear. Or maybe they did appear, but his original body did not recognize them.
