The Lin family is a typical large family of this era.
Mr. Lin and his wife, Mrs. Lin, had four sons and two daughters. One of their sons passed away, leaving three sons and two daughters.
Bai Ji’s husband, Lin Yongcheng, is the youngest son, with a large age gap between him and his two older brothers.
The eldest son, Lin Yongjia, has two sons and two daughters, while the second son, Lin Yongye, has three sons and one daughter. Both of these households have four children.
Lin Yongcheng’s household feels a bit sparse, with only two children, including the newborn Bai Guo.
Unlike other families where the elders favor the youngest son, the Lin family places importance on the eldest son.
They also dote on the eldest son’s children, who are treated as the apple of their eyes and have become spoiled brats.
A few days ago, Lin Yongjia’s youngest son, Lin Dayang, asked Bai Ji for some candy. When she said she didn’t have any, Lin Dayang pushed her hard.
Bai Ji, seven months pregnant, didn’t have time to avoid the impact and fell to the ground, bleeding immediately.
Fortunately, her daughter, Xiao Zisu, was quick-witted and went to find her grandparents. Otherwise, it could have been a double tragedy.
Thinking of this, Li Qiurong and Bai Zhi were very angry!
……
It was lunchtime, and the Lin family was all at home.
Lin Dayang, sitting in the yard with his bowl of food, spotted the three of them as they arrived outside the gate.
He immediately shouted, “Grandma, third aunt is back!”
Everyone in the main house stopped eating, and the atmosphere suddenly became tense.
All eyes turned to the head of the family, Old Mr. Lin.
Old Mr. Lin is a typical selfish man who takes all the benefits for himself and orders Mrs. Lin to do his dirty work.
Mrs. Lin is a woman who submits to her husband’s every word. She takes the blame for everything and is unaware of it.
Old Mr. Lin put down his chopsticks and said to Mrs. Lin, “You go out and explain things to them.”
Mrs. Lin immediately went out without a word.
The others remained silent.
They had overheard the old couple discussing their plans these past few days and knew what was going on in their minds.
The matter of Bai Ji’s fall and the early birth of her child had left the first branch feeling guilty and unable to speak out.
The second branch was playing the invisible game.
Little Xiao Zisu, only three years old, was very smart. She pouted and glanced at everyone’s expressions.
Her mother had just given birth to a younger sister, and her grandparents were unhappy, not even liking the baby.
She had overheard them saying that Bai Ji and her husband should divorce, and her father should marry a new wife to have a son.
Yesterday, her grandmother had even brought ten eggs to a matchmaker.
Don’t think she’s too young to understand that the matchmaker finds new wives for people.
Hmph, her grandparents are bad people!
She didn’t like them at all!
With a jump, Xiao Zisu ran out of the yard.
Mrs. Lin, who had been beautiful in her youth, now had deep wrinkles on her face. With her constant stern expression, she looked particularly mean and unapproachable.
She stood at the gate of the yard, her cloudy eyes staring at the family of three.
She glanced at the baby in Bai Zhi’s arms, but it was just a fleeting look.
Pulling her gaze away, she spoke to Bai Ji, “You can’t come in today. You’ve harmed your body giving birth to this child, and we don’t know if it will survive.”
She paused for a moment and then shifted her tone, revealing her real thoughts, “My son, Yongcheng, is still young. We can’t let him have no heirs. Don’t worry, we won’t keep you here. Once Yongcheng comes back, we’ll have the divorce. You’re still young and beautiful; go find a family that doesn’t need children and become a stepmother, so you don’t end up with no one to care for you in your old age.”
Mrs. Lin’s mind wasn’t sharp, but with Old Mr. Lin behind the scenes guiding her, she knew exactly what to say.
She didn’t make a scene but instead arranged everything clearly.
She not only addressed Bai Ji and the baby’s health but also stated the Lin family’s intentions.
Oh, and at the end, she gave Bai Ji a “suggestion.”
Every word packed with information left the villagers in shock.
There had never been a divorce in their village, so weren’t the Lin family embarrassed by this?
The villagers turned to look at the Bai family.
Even though they had mentally prepared for this, Li Qiurong and Bai Zhi were still enraged!
What was that supposed to mean?
Not only did they not wish the granddaughter well, but they even hoped the child wouldn’t survive. They had never seen such a grandmother!
“You won’t let me in the door, but will you stop your granddaughter from entering the Lin family’s gate?” Bai Ji, tightly wrapped in her clothes, leaned against Li Qiurong and spoke firmly, “Yongcheng works hard outside. When he’s not around, you want to drive away his wife and child, break up his family. Don’t you think he’ll hate you when he returns?”
“Hate me? I’m doing this for his own good!” Mrs. Lin shouted.
“Not letting his daughter enter is for his good?” Bai Ji asked.
“I’m his mother, of course I’m doing it for his good!” Mrs. Lin moved her lips.
She glanced at the baby in Bai Zhi’s arms.
The doctor had said this baby needed delicate care, and with so many mouths to feed at home, how could a girl get that much attention?
If the child came in, Lin Yongcheng’s salary would go to her.
It was better if she didn’t enter the door. Hopefully, she would die before Lin Yongcheng returned!
“This child is less than four pounds, and the doctor said it’s difficult to keep her alive,” Mrs. Lin said harshly, “If you want to raise her, take her back to the Bai family. Don’t let Yongcheng see her. Otherwise, if anything happens, Yongcheng will be sad.”
By this point, it was clear that even if they didn’t divorce, the family was already split.
Before this, Lin Yongcheng and Bai Ji didn’t have much conflict with the Lin family.
They had originally lived in the military, but a year ago, Lin Yongcheng had transferred to his hometown, and they had just moved in.
Since Lin Yongcheng was capable, the Lin family didn’t dare to treat their family poorly.
The reason they wanted a divorce was because Old Mr. and Mrs. Lin were so biased that their grandsons were treated like little emperors, while their granddaughters were treated as ordinary citizens.
At present, Xiao Zisu was still young and hadn’t been enslaved, but as she grew up, things would likely change.
It wasn’t just about being enslaved; the more terrifying aspect was the mental oppression and brainwashing that accumulated over time.
They didn’t want their daughter to grow up in such a terrible environment.
Today was the first time Bai Ji had a conflict with the Lin family.
Before this, they had only thought that the Lin family was just biased and male chauvinistic, and they could just divide the family.
But now, just dividing the family wasn’t enough.
The Lin family had gone as far as cursing a newborn child, and Li Qiurong and Bai Zhi’s patience had reached its limit.
They were ready to sever ties!
Li Qiurong sneered, “I’ll call you one last time, mother-in-law. You won’t let my daughter in, and you can’t stand to see my granddaughter doing well. Fine, this child belongs to the Bai family. Whether she lives or dies is none of your business!”
She paused and added, “The Bai family has face too. From now on, if either of them tries to step into the Lin family, I’ll break their legs before you can even chase them out!”
The villagers watching the drama couldn’t help but sigh.
The Lin family was so heartless that they didn’t even want their own granddaughter, while the Bai family wasn’t someone to mess with.
Bai Ji had the support of her parents, and if anyone else had been forced to divorce right after giving birth, it would have been like a death sentence!
Mrs. Lin was truly despicable!
Of course, only families that loved their daughters would think like this.
Those who also valued sons over daughters stood by Mrs. Lin.
Lin Yongcheng was the most successful person in the village, and they couldn’t let the family line end, could they?
“My daughter had a difficult birth and was injured. The child was premature and weak, isn’t it your grandson, Lin Dayang, who knocked Bai Ji over and caused all of this?” Bai Zhi pointed to Lin Dayang in the yard and said, “A child this young is so vicious; when he grows up, he’ll be a criminal!”
Don’t say he’s vicious—some animals show their true nature at a young age.
Lin Dayang had caused Bai Ji to almost suffer a double death, yet he showed no remorse. Instead, he sat in the yard with his bowl, watching the drama unfold.
Such a brat would surely grow up to be terrible.
And the Lin family, shifting the blame onto Bai Ji, were they a responsible family?
“What does it have to do with Dayang?” Mrs. Lin yelled, as if she had been stepped on. “What could a five-year-old understand?”
“How old your grandson is has nothing to do with me. We’re talking about this child now. Today, the Lin family doesn’t want this child, so she belongs to the Bai family, but we’ll make sure it’s written down in black and white to avoid the Lin family trying to snatch her back after we raise her!”
“Who would want an unwanted child?” Mrs. Lin retorted.
Not to mention the high cost of raising this child, she wasn’t even a grandson—what advantage was there to stealing her?
Only the Bai family would treat their daughter as precious!
Stupid people think everyone else is as stupid as they are.
“I don’t trust your words. Let’s write an agreement. The brigade leader is here, and he can witness it.” Li Qiurong didn’t want to argue with her anymore.
She had seen through the Lin family’s true nature, so it was time to sever the ties thoroughly to avoid any future manipulation of their child.
The brigade leader, who had been named, instantly had a headache.
“What kind of family turns into this? Aren’t you becoming enemies instead of in-laws?”
“Not letting the child into the house, what kind of family is that?” Li Qiurong asked.
“Write the agreement, right now!!” Mrs. Lin wasn’t backing down either.
Her son worked in the city and was capable. If they divorced, so be it. He could marry a young girl, have two sons, and continue the family line.
Although he had feelings for Bai Ji, could feelings compete with having a son? Which man didn’t want a son? Wasn’t having a son more important than a wife?!
Mrs. Lin didn’t believe otherwise.
There were always people who loved to watch drama. The neighbors next door quickly provided paper and pens, and the agreement was written at the Lin family’s door in front of everyone.
Old Mr. Lin and the other Lin family members didn’t show up at all.
Mrs. Lin couldn’t write, so she just stamped her handprint.
Once the agreement was finalized, Xiao Zisu saw her chance and ran out of the yard.
“Mom!” She rushed to hug Bai Ji’s leg, looking up at her with a small face, “Grandma took eggs to the matchmaker yesterday and said she was going to find a new stepmother to have a brother. I don’t want a stepmother or a brother… I want to go to Maternal Grandma’s house, take me with you!”
She ended with a hint of grievance.
Mom and Grandpa only talked about taking the baby, not her.
The gossiping villagers gasped.
They couldn’t believe the Lin family was like this—throwing their daughter-in-law out of the house just after childbirth and already looking for a new wife.
Li Qiurong couldn’t help but laugh, “Already eager to find a new wife?”
Old Mr. Lin and Mrs. Lin were too naive.
Lin Yongcheng was a strong-willed man, and the Lin family couldn’t manipulate him like that.
“Alright, let’s go to Grandma’s house!” Li Qiurong bent down to pat Xiao Zisu’s head.
Mrs. Lin had never been educated and always felt inferior in front of the cultured Li Qiurong and Bai Zhi.
When Li Qiurong’s glance pierced through her, Mrs. Lin immediately became angry.
She pointed at Xiao Zisu and cursed, “You ungrateful little thing!”
“Don’t want a brother? You want your dad’s family to end? Having a brother is for your good! If you don’t have a brother, who will protect you when you get married?”
Xiao Zisu was so frightened by Mrs. Lin’s fierce expression that she hid behind Bai Ji’s leg.
She peeked out and replied, “I only like the one Mommy gave birth to me!”
