Li Guihua was reluctant to pay Mr. Zhao to come up with a name, since there was already a ready-made one.
Although Gu Zhao had no official title, he could read and write. That was better than those peasants, right?
”Okay.” Gu Zhao didn’t ask Li Guihua what her hopes and expectations for Goudan were. Anyway, they couldn’t be for him to be safe and healthy, but most likely for him to be smart, promising and rich. He thought about it and mentioned a few, all of which were bright and hopeful good intentions.
Li Guihua chose Gu Chen. “This one is good. Goudan was born in the morning. When the sun came out, he started to cry. He will definitely be a successful person in the future.”
Gu Goudan then changed his name to Gu Chen.
Not long after they finished talking, Li Zhouzhou and his husband were about to leave. Li Guihua, with a smile on her face, filled the basket that Li Zhouzhou had brought with dates and sent them outside. Along the way, she said, “We are going to build a house soon. When it’s finished, I’ll ask Tiedan to invite you back for a drink.”
”Okay.” Li Zhouzhou agreed.
Maybe Gu Zhao didn’t do anything to take advantage of Li Guihua today. Instead, Li Guihua even got a lucky name for her youngest son. She was also somewhat sincere towards Li Zhouzhou and Gu Zhao, and their faces were full of smiles.
After sending the people off, Li Guihua still thought, it’s a good thing that Gu Zhao married into the Li family, otherwise he would have to rely on her to support him to continue his studies. How could she dare to eat meat or build a big tiled house? Now he is a burden to the Li family. The officials of the prefecture and county have said that there is no hope for Gu Zhao’s studies, but Li Zhouzhou still hasn’t given up. It’s really pitiful.
In the days that followed, the Li family’s life returned to its former peace.
Li Zhouzhou also took in a piglet and ten chicks, but his husband didn’t say anything. Later, Li Zhouzhou found out that his husband would also help him feed the chicks and piglets.
”No need, husband, you should study hard.” Li Zhouzhou said, “It’s not the busy farming season yet, I can handle it, there’s nothing else to do at home except feeding these.”
Gu Zhao agreed, as he had indeed put too much energy into the fields in the past period of time. During the agricultural holiday in July, Zhu Xiucai came back from the prefecture and county with two handwritten manuscripts and a copy of his own notes. Gu Zhao was naturally very grateful and talked to Zhu Xiucai for the whole afternoon.
Zhu Xiucai said that his foundation was okay, but he lacked flexibility, and if he did that next year, his situation might be dangerous.
Gu Zhao said he didn’t plan to stop next year and would try again the year after.
He now goes to Master Zhao’s place nine days a month. Master Zhao’s foundation is still solid, and he also brings his grandson Zhao Ze. So Gu Zhao and Zhao Ze review and consolidate the basic subjects such as the Four Books and Five Classics together.
The book Zhu Xiucai brought back was “Benefiting the Country” written by the great scholar of the Dali period. He said that reading it carefully could help broaden one’s thinking and help in writing policy papers. The current Emperor Kang Jing highly praised it.
This book may be a must-read for official schools in all prefectures and counties.
”On Benefiting the Country” is not thick, with a total of seven chapters. The central idea is that the people are the most important. It focuses on the land on which the people depend for their survival, praises the wisdom of the founding emperor of the Dali period, the low tax rate, and the light corvee, which allowed the people to recuperate. Then it praises the current Emperor Kang Jing for his hard work and the beginning of a prosperous era. Finally, it comes with a warning, meaning that the tax rate is now acceptable and he dare not increase it any further.
He also talked about business and scolded corrupt officials, saying that corrupt officials would easily undermine the foundation of a country.
The writings of this great scholar are meaningful and moderate. He starts by praising Emperor Kang Jing. When writing about farmland, he writes that Emperor Kang Jing personally tilled the fields during his reign and that he often worried about the harvest of the people’s fields and could not sleep at night. If there was a severe drought, he would go to the Temple of Heaven to pray in person, and it would not be long before rain came. God was also moved by Emperor Kang Jing.
Let me talk about my own point of view and finally wish the country long-term stability and prosperity.
Merchants have always been the last in every dynasty, but this article discusses the value of merchants, so naturally he praises the emperor first, and then he says some of his own ideas, such as merchants can have less miscellaneous taxes, there are too many tax items nowadays, etc.
When Zhu Xiucai talked about it, the ones he highly praised were the chapter on Tian Gen and the chapter on the prosperous times, followed by the chapter on the corrupt government and the harm to the people.
Gu Zhao actually likes the chapter on business very much, but judging from the order of the book and the praise of Zhu Xiucai and the official school teachers, the current Emperor Kang Jing prefers the doctrine of the mean, and those in power still despise business.
As for the chapter on corrupt officials harming the people, Gu Zhao felt that the rulers might not like it very much. It was said that during the reign of Emperor Kang Jing, the people lived and worked in peace and prosperity. How could there be so many corrupt officials in such a prosperous and peaceful era?
