On the car, Little Zisu woke up.
She rubbed her eyes and found herself in an unfamiliar place.
At first, she was stunned, but then she saw Li Qiurong and remembered.
Their family was moving to the county town, and now they were on their way there. But where were the others?
“Grandma, where’s my sister?” she asked.
“Your sister got off the car,” Li Qiurong replied, unsure of what was happening outside. Little Zisu struggled to get up, but she was gently pressed back into her arms. “Let’s wait on the car.”
Little Zisu pouted but obediently accepted it.
Little Bai Guo was carsick, so she couldn’t be forced to ride to the county town.
Adults have a hard time with motion sickness, and a child would suffer even more.
But the problem was, it was a hot day, so leaving her in the sun was not an option.
Bai Ji sighed, “The bicycle didn’t make it back to the county town.”
Lin Yongcheng had ridden the bicycle to the county town.
This time, they were moving by car, so there was no need to bring the bicycle back.
If only they had known… they should have brought it back.
Now what?
The county town was still far away, they had barely covered half the distance.
Bai Shu gently patted Little Bai Guo’s back and made a decision, “Alright, leave the little basket with me, and I’ll take Little Bai Guo to find a shaded place to rest. You all go ahead to the county town, and let Yongcheng come back on the bicycle to pick us up.”
“I’ll stay with Little Bai Guo. You go ahead,” Bai Ji was still worried about her daughter.
Bai Shu was not going to agree to that.
It was unfamiliar land, and how could they leave a woman here? A woman with a baby under six months, walking outside—how dangerous could that be?
“I said I’ll stay. There’s a village ahead, right? I’ll go there and find someone to rest. When Little Bai Guo gets hungry, I can borrow some hot water to make her formula. After you all get to the county town, you and your mom can pack, and then let Yongcheng come to pick us up.”
Bai Ji replied, “I’ll stay here with you.”
“Listen to Dad, go to the county town,” Lin Yongcheng glanced at her and added, “The bicycle can’t carry two adults, so who will walk back?”
Their family only had two men. They couldn’t have a woman and child risk it. He had to drive, so Bai Shu would have to stay with Little Bai Guo.
Bai Ji nodded reluctantly, “Alright!”
Well, the bicycle couldn’t carry that many people.
When she heard that she wouldn’t have to ride in the car, Little Bai Guo relaxed.
She sat up straight and started looking around.
All she could see were fields and low mountains, no signs of people.
But where there were fields, there must be a village nearby.
After looking around, she quickly lost interest.
Back in the car, Li Qiurong asked, “How’s Little Bai Guo?”
“Carsick. We’ll go to the county town first, and later let Yongcheng come back to get them,” Bai Ji explained. Li Qiurong was surprised, “A child that young gets carsick?”
“Does motion sickness care about age?”
“Right, it’s not about age.”
Little Zisu blinked, “What’s motion sickness?”
Li Qiurong patted her head and explained, “It makes you feel uncomfortable when you ride in a car.”
“Oh… what about my sister?” Little Zisu asked anxiously.
“Grandpa’s waiting with her here, and your dad will come to pick her up later.”
Little Zisu didn’t ask any more questions but peered out anxiously.
Bai Ji found the basket where they kept Little Bai Guo’s things, then picked up the baby carrier and rolled it up to put inside the basket.
Before getting out of the car, she didn’t forget to bring Bai Shu a straw hat.
Lin Yongcheng saw this, “There’s a village behind the mountain. Since Dad’s holding Little Bai Guo, it’s not convenient. Can you help carry the basket? I’ll drive to the village entrance to wait for you.”
They were in the south, where the mountains were low but numerous.
The village wasn’t far, maybe just four to five hundred meters. The low mountain blocked the view, but after a turn, they’d be at the village entrance.
Bai Ji nodded, “I’ll take Dad to the village entrance.”
Bai Shu shot them a glance.
What was there to worry about? He was an adult outside—why were they so concerned?
And why did they need to send him to the village entrance?
After walking a short distance and making a turn, they reached the other side of the mountain.
They walked along a small path to the village entrance.
After three minutes, there were two small courtyards in front of them.
Lin Yongcheng and Bai Ji finally felt at ease.
Bai Shu was holding Little Bai Guo in one arm and carrying the small basket in the other, arriving at the first courtyard.
The weather was too hot. Otherwise, Bai Shu would have kept walking.
Little children can’t stand the sun and can’t tolerate hunger either, so they had to find a place to rest.
In the courtyard were two elderly people and a middle-aged woman.
When they saw Bai Shu with a child in his arms, looking clean and well-groomed, and hearing his explanation, they invited him to sit inside.
Bai Shu sat under the grapevine with Little Bai Guo in his arms.
The family wasn’t chatty.
They only asked how many children they had and how old Little Bai Guo was, then said no more.
Little Bai Guo was curious and looked around.
In the courtyard, besides the three adults, there were two children in the corner.
The older one was a bit taller than Little Zisu, and the younger one was in a baby walker.
She seemed to be a few months older than Little Zisu.
Both were thin and small, wearing clothes like barrels, and their hair was cut unevenly, almost as if it had been chewed off by a dog.
So, were these two children boys or girls?
Little Bai Guo stared at the two children, then looked at her own little skirt.
She had never been to someone else’s house before, only staying at home or visiting the health clinic with Bai Shu, so she didn’t meet many children.
Though she knew the “villain” child was the happiest, she didn’t really understand what that meant.
It was only now that she suddenly realized how good her own life was.
Not to mention anything else, just by looking at their clothes, you could tell their gender!
Seeing her staring at the other kids, Bai Shu thought she was curious about the walker.
“That’s a baby walker. When you get bigger, we’ll get a carpenter to make one for you.”
Little Bai Guo immediately got annoyed.
She turned her head and buried her face in Bai Shu’s chest, pretending she didn’t hear.
No listening, no listening! Fishy doesn’t want to walk!
Fishy wants to swim in the water!
After fooling herself, Little Bai Guo sat up straight again.
She looked down at her little chubby feet and fell into deep thought.
Fishy can only swim in water.
When her tail turned into little feet, how could she walk?
She stared at her little feet for a long time, then looked at the baby walker.
It was made of two wooden boards and several wooden strips nailed together, with four wooden wheels at the bottom.
The child was placed inside the circle, and when the wheels turned, the walker moved. Could this thing really help a child learn to walk?
…
Little Bai Guo took a nap, and when she woke up, she found herself in an unfamiliar room. Outside, she could hear Little Zisu asking all sorts of questions.
She immediately calmed down.
This must be the county town. She would probably be living here for a while.
She looked around the room. It was a bit empty. They had just moved in and hadn’t had time to buy many things.
Little Bai Guo lost interest after a few glances.
Half an hour later, Bai Ji entered the room to check on the child. As soon as she entered, she saw Little Bai Guo staring at the ceiling. She quickly picked her up.
“Good girl, why are you so quiet?”
“When you wake up, you should call out.”
Having moved to a new place, waking up in an unfamiliar room without any adults nearby, she still didn’t make a sound. Bai Ji sighed.
This child was too well-behaved. What if, on the road, someone took her away?
Would she follow them too, quietly?
Bai Shu and Li Qiurong were still unpacking.
When Bai Ji came out of the room holding Little Bai Guo, Li Qiurong casually asked, “When did Little Bai Guo wake up? I didn’t hear anything.”
“I don’t know when she woke up,” Bai Ji sighed. “I walked in and found her lying there quietly.”
People are always worried their children aren’t obedient enough, but for their family, they were more concerned their child wasn’t noisy enough.
They talked about it with a touch of worry.
Just then, Lin Yongcheng came back carrying a basket of vegetables.
“Good luck with the move today, I bought two live fish. One to eat, one to keep.”
Bai Zhu took a wooden basin from inside and filled it with water, putting the two large carp in it. Immediately, the fish came back to life.
Little Bai Guo craned her neck, making little cooing sounds.
Bai Ji helplessly said, “Do you want to see the fish, or do you want to take a bath?”
That afternoon, Little Bai Guo, who was less than six months old, spoke for the first time.
It surprised the whole family.
