The other party fled in a hurry, and Liu Yu stood behind, genuinely pleased. She originally wanted to jump up and celebrate, but due to her weight, jumping and landing on the ground would just create a pit in the dirt road.
After suppressing her celebration, Liu Yu turned and hurried to the field.
When she arrived, it was just in time for lunch. Nie Xiaocui also showed up, and the family gathered together.
Liu Ye saw his sister return and broke off half of the corn bun he was holding, offering it to Liu Yu. “Sis, I’m sorry. I thought you were just talking about going to work today and didn’t bring any dry food for you. You can have my half.”
After thinking for a moment, he figured that his sister’s appetite was much bigger than that, and half a corn bun wouldn’t be enough. So, he handed over the whole bun. “Sis, just take it all. I’ve worked all morning and have no appetite. A little cold water will do for me.”
Liu Jianjia saw this and hurriedly broke half of his corn bun, handing it to his son. “How can you, a young lad, not eat breakfast? Here, take half from your dad.”
Nie Xiaocui disagreed and wanted to break off some of her own. The family continued to push the food back and forth until Liu Yu placed the teapot on the ground and opened her small bundle. “Why are you all being so polite? Look at this! No one will go hungry for lunch today.”
A small, golden pile of potatoes was laid out in front of everyone, and for those with growling stomachs, it was a more tempting sight than gold.
Liu Ye was shocked. “Sis, where did these come from?”
Nie Xiaocui and her husband were also equally surprised.
Liu Yu pretended to be mysterious. “Guess.”
Nie Xiaocui shot her daughter a sly glance. “What a clever girl, how would I know?”
Liu Jianjia, the honest man, immediately thought of the worst. “You didn’t steal these, did you?”
Liu Yu quickly waved her hands. “Dad, you really think too highly of me. How could I be a flying thief? I’ll tell you the truth—these were given to me by Wang Changping. This morning, you told me to thank him, and after giving us some of his Lu Hua chickens, he gave me a whole bag of potatoes in return.”
She brought up Wang Changping as a shield, a smart move that at least made the Liu family stop questioning the origin of the potatoes.
With the food revealed, the Liu family sat together to eat lunch.
Liu Yu took half of the corn bun from her father’s hand. Once she finished, she said she was full and began to gulp down water. Half a corn bun wasn’t enough to fill anyone, especially with this body that had an enormous appetite. It didn’t satisfy her hunger at all.
Liu Yu was trying to lose weight and didn’t dare eat too much. She could only drink lots of cold water, feeling a “water-filled” fullness that somewhat suppressed the hunger in her stomach.
Nie Xiaocui watched her nervously. “Daughter, you’re only eating this little. It’s like feeding a bird! No, no, you must eat more.”
Liu Yu shook her head and burped from the water. “I’m full. I really don’t want any more. By the way, Mom, is there anything special about the basin at home?”
Nie Xiaocui thought for a moment. “That basin is an heirloom passed down from our ancestors. I’ve heard that as long as you have this basin, your descendants won’t go hungry. But it’s not really true, is it? We’ve used that basin for years, and it hasn’t brought us any fortune. Hey, Yu, if you’re still hungry, eat more!”
The basin was truly a treasure basin!
Upon hearing the story behind it, Liu Yu suddenly felt a mix of anger and regret. Why did her mother, Nie Xiaocui, use a treasure basin as a regular washbasin?
If Liu Yu hadn’t accidentally discovered this, the treasure basin would have been used as a washbasin for a lifetime! It was unfair to the basin, and Liu Yu felt sympathy for it.
