Chapter 53
Wang Changping dropped the rope in his hand and ran out frantically.
The tree was too large, with numerous branches and thick foliage. Since he was buried under the leaves and branches, he couldn’t see anything, making it seem as if Liu Yu’s fall had been an illusion.
Wang Changping ran to the place where Liu Yu had fallen and, without any tools, began clearing the branches and leaves by hand. Some branches were very sturdy, and as he tried to break them, the broken ends scraped his hands, causing them to bleed.
Ignoring the pain, Wang Changping continued desperately trying to break branches and pull leaves apart. He had to dig Liu Yu out!
The others finally snapped out of it and began helping him. Those with axes took axes, those with shovels took shovels, and rushed forward to assist in the rescue. Every moment counted. The sooner Liu Yu was freed, the higher her chances of survival!
With everyone working together, the fire burned brighter. Soon, Wang Changping saw the sleeve of Liu Yu’s coat. He quickened his pace, and after pulling away a section of a branch, Liu Yu was revealed, eyes closed, lying among the branches. Other than a few scratches on her face, she had no serious injuries.
Wang Changping felt a moment of relief when he saw Liu Yu. He grabbed her arm, trying to pull her out, but as soon as he tugged, he realized something was wrong—her leg was trapped under a thick branch.
Seeing this, others wanted to call for help to lift the branch, but Wang Changping couldn’t wait. Driven by desperation, he grabbed the branch with both hands and forcefully moved it aside to free Liu Yu.
After moving her to flat ground, Wang Changping was frantic, his words coming out in a stutter: “Liu Yu… wake up, don’t scare me…”
But Liu Yu remained silent, eyes still shut. Just then, someone shouted, “We need to get her to the hospital! If we wait any longer, it might be too late.”
Wang Changping was about to carry her when the man who had swapped rabbits earlier came forward. He turned to find an old cart. Liu Yu was too heavy for anyone to carry down the mountain, but with the cart, they could transport her more efficiently!
Wang Changping didn’t have time to speak, only giving the man a grateful glance.
The two men hurriedly pushed the cart down the mountain. Liu Yu lay in the cart, unconscious, her body swaying with the movement.
They managed to reach the bottom of the mountain and hurriedly flagged down a vehicle. After rushing Liu Yu to the emergency room, it was already late at night.
Sitting outside the emergency room, Wang Changping lowered his head, silent.
The man who had helped thought for a moment and decided to offer some comfort. He spoke, “Comrade Wang, look at Liu Yu, she has such a fortunate face. Don’t worry too much. There’s a saying: good people have good luck!”
Wang Changping turned to look at him, and immediately, the man fell silent, afraid of Wang Changping’s terrifying gaze.
Once the man stopped speaking, Wang Changping fell into deep thought.
He felt regret, guilt, and self-blame. It was all his fault for not taking care of her properly.
His mother had died because of him. People called him an unlucky star, and no one in his family liked him, so he had to leave home and go to the countryside. As a sent-down youth, no one bothered with him.
Then Liu Yu, a cheerful and talkative girl, appeared. She was like a ray of sunshine in his life. When he was sick and no one cared, Liu Yu brought him warmth, making him hot meals and soups—things he had never even dared to imagine.
He hadn’t taken care of her properly, and now she was in such a dire situation!
At that moment, the doctor came out, and his voice came through his white mask, “Who is the family member of the patient?”
Wang Changping jumped up. “How is Liu Yu? No matter the cost, save her!”
The man who had swapped rabbits hurriedly held Wang Changping back and smiled awkwardly at the doctor. “We’re the patient’s comrades! From the same production team.”
The doctor glanced at Wang Changping. “Go pay the hospitalization fee. We’ve taken X-rays. The patient has a fractured leg, but no other serious injuries.”
Wang Changping sighed in relief and smiled.
The man who had swapped rabbits patted Wang Changping’s shoulder. “I told you, Liu Yu has a fortunate face! Good people have good luck!”
When Liu Yu woke up, the ceiling was white, and the walls were green. She realized she was in a hospital from the 1970s. She remembered being hit by the tree and felt that being in the hospital was reasonable.
Turning her head, Liu Yu saw Wang Changping. His black eyes were fixed on her. She remembered he had saved her!
Propping herself up with her hands, Liu Yu realized her leg was in a cast and had thick bandages and a splint. She pointed to her leg and asked Wang Changping, “Did I break my leg?”
Wang Changping nodded, and the man who had swapped rabbits spoke up, “I told you, Liu Yu, you’re really lucky! That huge tree fell right in front of you, and you were buried under the branches, but all you broke was a leg. That’s what they mean by good people having good luck!”
Liu Yu recognized the man. “That…”
The man pushed up his small glasses and introduced himself, “I’m Xu Huai. That day, everyone was criticizing you, but I wasn’t part of it. We have no grudge. An injury in the production team is a big deal. I’ll go back to inform the team and let your parents know. Comrade Wang will stay here to take care of you.”
After Xu Huai left, only Wang Changping and Liu Yu were left in the room.
“Drink some water!” Wang Changping poured a bowl of hot water and handed it to Liu Yu.
Liu Yu drank the water eagerly, then let out a satisfied sigh. “Give me another bowl!”
Wang Changping quickly filled the bowl again and then took out two steamed buns from his pocket. “I just bought these. Eat something.”
Liu Yu took the buns and said thoughtfully, “Does this count as karma? The last time you were sick, I took care of you. Now it’s my turn to enjoy the benefits.”
Wang Changping didn’t reply, just watching her with his eyes.
Liu Yu felt embarrassed under his gaze. She pulled the blanket up to cover most of her face, leaving only her eyes visible. “Stop looking at me like that!”
Wang Changping turned away, clearly laughing.
Liu Yu poked her head out from under the blanket and stretched her neck to ask, “What are you laughing at?”
Wang Changping held back his laughter, “You look like a turtle hiding its head!”
There’s no way to say a girl looks like a turtle, right? If it were anyone else, Liu Yu would scratch them. She pursed her lips and said, “I’m magnanimous. I won’t argue! By the way, thank you for saving me.”
Wang Changping didn’t mind at all. He grabbed Liu Yu’s hand and looked at her with sparkling eyes. “I’m so glad you’re okay!”
Liu Yu felt a little touched and a bit smug. “My mom always says that being plump brings good fortune. So, I must be really lucky!”
But no matter how lucky she was, she still had to stay in the hospital.
