Chapter 1: It Is Said That I Can Only Live for Seven Days
On Beast Island in the Immortal Realm, inside the Immortal Palace, all the immortals had gathered, but the atmosphere was extremely oppressive, with the leader’s face as cold as water, as if facing a great enemy.
The metallic scent of blood spread through the air, and then, the teleportation array at the front of the palace suddenly lit up, and a pool of blood and flesh in the shape of a person materialized above it. The moment everyone looked at it, their expressions changed to one of increased fear.
At this moment, a jade pendant symbolizing identity was clearly visible on the bloody flesh. The blue-glass dragon floral pattern represented the cultivation of a Daluo Golden Immortal. But who could have expected that this revered figure, ranked in the top three on Beast Island, would die silently without even letting out a scream, quietly and tragically passing away.
Bright red blood dripped down the edge of the teleportation platform, slowly filling the array’s patterns, while also filling the hearts of everyone with fear.
“This… how many is this now?” Someone asked in a trembling voice.
“The fourth one today. Once they go, they die, but no one knows who will be next.”
“Who else could it be? It will be one of us. I heard the revered ones sent from above won’t arrive until tomorrow at the earliest. But I’m afraid we might not even make it until then…”
“Yeah! I just hope the next one to go won’t be me.”
Such hopeless and confused conversations were happening constantly in all corners of the palace, and the atmosphere inside became even colder and more suffocating, until it all turned into complete silence.
At this moment, a stumbling figure suddenly appeared at the gate of the hall, breaking the oppressive silence. It was a young man in his twenties, with a very distinct and unique appearance.
Wearing a rough cloth shirt and with hair neither long nor short, he showed no hint of the spiritual power typical of others. Moreover, he seemed to be shocked by the oppressive atmosphere inside the palace, his body trembling continuously, and his face filled with a complex expression.
“Damn it!” An immortal standing at the door seemed to finally find an outlet for his repressed emotions, mocking without reservation.
“Enough, stop talking. He’s a pitiful person, he only has five or six days left to live, and now he probably won’t make it through today.”
The immortal appeared to be trying to stop the mocking, but after only a few words, he had already sentenced the young man to death, showing no concern at all. Moreover, his gaze toward the young man was filled with contempt, as if he were looking at a dead person.
However, the young man standing alone at the gate of the Immortal Palace showed no intention of retorting to this scene, keeping a gentle smile on his face. But if one observed closely, they would notice the flash of understanding and sarcasm in his eyes.
This was the Immortal Realm, on Beast Island. As for this young man, his name was Chen Xi, the only mortal in the Immortal Realm.
In the end, it was an unfortunate accident.
Four days ago, Chen Xi was the most famous pet blogger on Earth China’s Weibo, known as the number one influencer on Weibo, with countless loyal fans and a level of influence comparable to top celebrities. But who would have guessed that after attending the Weibo annual influencer awards ceremony, he was struck unconscious by a meteor that appeared out of nowhere, and somehow bound to a system.
When he woke up, he found himself in the Immortal Realm.
The spiritual energy in the Immortal Realm was so rich that ordinary mortals could not adapt to it. If they couldn’t cultivate into immortals, their bodies would quickly decay under the pressure of the spiritual energy. Yet, Chen Xi was an extremely unlucky individual, born without any spiritual roots, worse than the legendary five-element root that was considered the most useless.
In the end, the immortal who had come to guide him had no choice but to send him to Beast Island, the place with the thinnest spiritual energy in the Immortal Realm. Yet, even so, Chen Xi found it difficult to survive a week.
The world was full of gods and Buddhas, with three thousand paths to take. This was the place most longed for by people. But for Chen Xi, it was like a tomb, a place where he couldn’t survive for long.
As Chen Xi was lost in thought, the system in his mind, as if intentionally cooperating with him, spoke in a mechanical electronic voice: “Host’s popularity is insufficient. You will be erased soon.”
Chen Xi: …
—
Time passed slowly, and the silence in the grand hall remained unbroken. But as the teleportation array lit up once more, the immortals, who were almost numb from the suffocating atmosphere, involuntarily began to tremble.
It was an unwarranted disaster.
The events began three days ago when Beast Island sent a heavily injured Moonlight Celestial Beast (Yuehua Celestial Beast) for recovery. It seemed to be a descendant of a celestial beast, with incredibly precious bloodlines. So, despite its current condition, it still held a status far beyond that of these immortals.
As a result, the temporary leader of Beast Island, Immortal Wu Yi, carefully sent the immortal most skilled in serving celestial beasts to take care of it. However, this not only failed but inadvertently angered the Moonlight Celestial Beast, causing it to rampage.
Now, in another hour, it would be time for the Moonlight Celestial Beast to eat, and at the same time, it would also be the time for everyone to face their deaths.
A fearful atmosphere hung in the palace, never fading away. Meanwhile, the hourglass hanging from the eaves continued to drop sand, endlessly reminding the immortals of their uncertain fate, as if signaling their helpless doom.
—Even those who once could pluck the stars from the sky were now no different from lambs waiting to be slaughtered, with life and death completely out of their control!
“Who will volunteer to go this time?” asked Immortal Wu Yi, the leader, when the time was almost up.
But the only answer was silence.
“Really no one?” Immortal Wu Yi’s tone grew angry, and the aura of the high-level immortal expanded, causing some of the lower-ranked immortals to involuntarily kneel down. Yet, no one stepped forward to volunteer.
Because those who went would surely die.
“Since no one will, I will decide,” Immortal Wu Yi said after a long silence. He no longer intended to ask for anyone’s opinion.
“There’s less than ten minutes left…” The immortal in charge of keeping time spoke urgently.
At that moment, Immortal Wu Yi, already enraged by the immortals’ avoidance, quickly cast a formation, locking the entire hall in place. Meanwhile, those immortals who had been paralyzed by their fear of death were forced by the pressure of Immortal Wu Yi’s spiritual power to stand in a row in front of the teleportation array. Among them was Chen Xi, although he stood at the back.
“It is an honor to serve the celestial beasts. There aren’t many opportunities. Don’t waste it,” Immortal Wu Yi spoke as he glared at the immortals. The words seemed gentle, but they carried a chilling threat.
This was a threat and a final ultimatum. The immortals in the hall were plunged into despair.
As the final thirty seconds before the teleportation array activated approached, the atmosphere in the hall reached its freezing point. The female immortal closest to the array trembled uncontrollably, almost collapsing, and began to cry out in desperation.
“Please, save me, I don’t want to die yet.” She looked around helplessly, hoping someone would speak up for her. But wherever her eyes fell, everyone simply lowered their heads indifferently.
Achieving the [1]“Great Dao” (大道, Dàdào) refers to the ultimate, cosmic path or principle in Chinese philosophy, particularly in Daoism (Taoism). Others felt the same fear.
The so-called immortals were still just mortals at heart. Chen Xi, who had remained silent, coldly evaluated the scene in front of him. But just then, an unexpected force pushed him forward, making him take several steps ahead, directly standing in front of everyone.
Chen Xi frowned and turned to look at the immortal who had pushed him. The immortal, however, didn’t care about the coldness in his eyes. Instead, he spoke casually to Immortal Wu Yi: “Immortal Wu Yi, I’ve heard that the Moonlight Celestial Beast likes fresh things. Since Chen is from the mortal world, he must have some new ideas. Why not let him give it a try?”
This immortal was a suitor of the female immortal and, seeing her pleading, couldn’t help but feel sorry for her. However, he loved himself more, so he pushed Chen Xi forward as a scapegoat. In his eyes, Chen Xi was just a mortal, not even as valuable as an ant. He had only seven days to live—whether he died sooner or later made no difference.
As soon as the immortal finished speaking, a few immortals at the front of the line joined in, “That’s right, Immortal Wu Yi, what if it works?”
Some, in their fear, blurted out, “Why sacrifice us when there’s a useless mortal?”
The voices grew louder, and after examining Chen Xi for a while, Immortal Wu Yi reluctantly nodded. For Immortal Wu Yi, these immortals were all just cannon fodder, whether they went first or last didn’t matter. Besides, although he didn’t care about these weak immortals, it would still be troublesome if they caused a commotion. So, he decided to grant their request.
“Since that’s the case, Chen Xi, you may go first,” Immortal Wu Yi said, casually performing a gesture and throwing Chen Xi into the teleportation array. The entire process was smooth, but not a single person asked for Chen Xi’s opinion.
The immense immortal spiritual power instantly enveloped Chen Xi’s body. Soon after, a pain that seemed capable of tearing his very soul apart rapidly swept over him.
Chen Xi’s body was already fragile, and such a sudden assault from the immortal spiritual power would normally lead to his instant death. He wouldn’t even survive long enough to be transported to the celestial beast’s cave. However, the immortals, clear in their hearts as day, still pushed Chen Xi forward first. The reason? Simply to live a few more seconds.
To sacrifice others for one’s own survival—so easy, so selfish, so despicable, and utterly shameless.
Anger suppressed in Chen Xi’s heart flared up instantly, but at this moment, his life was already hanging by a thread, leaving him no chance to fight back. Not even a single curse could escape his lips.
“Only blame yourself for being a mortal,” sneered the male immortal who had pushed Chen Xi out earlier. The other immortals, who had temporarily escaped death, also revealed expressions of relief.
Yet, unexpectedly, Wu Yi Immortal spoke up: “Young Chen, don’t worry. You’ll be well compensated. If you manage to please the Moonlight Celestial Beast, I’ll make sure you receive a Xuanshui Pill.”
The mention of the Xuanshui Pill immediately caused the immortals to change their expressions, and some even showed signs of greed.
The Xuanshui Pill was one of the most famous of the three immortal pills, a treasure that only the sect leaders of the top three immortal realms could refine. Its sole function was to help immortals break through the barrier to the Earth Immortal level.
The immortal realms were strictly hierarchical. The different immortal realms were divided according to strength. Non-natives of a domain could not even step onto a single inch of its land without being executed. Earth Immortals had the strength to push the low-ranking immortals of Beast Island to leave and ascend to a higher domain.
Beast Island was a place with extremely sparse immortal spiritual power, and cultivation here was incredibly difficult. Thus, a pill like the Xuanshui Pill was a long-cherished dream for these immortals.
However, in Chen Xi’s eyes, this was no different than a direct insult. As everyone knew, he was unable to cultivate immortality—his body could not withstand immortal spiritual power. Even if he obtained a Xuanshui Pill, it would be useless. The only reason Wu Yi Immortal offered it was to give the others a false sense of hope, making them more willing to send others to their death.
In the end, what a farce this immortal realm was, full of despicable, shameless people.
“As long as I, Chen Xi, don’t die, one day, I will make you all pay.”
The pain in his body made the humiliation and unwillingness even more vivid. Chen Xi gritted his teeth, glaring at every face in front of him. He had to remember them, these people who treated him like garbage, who abused him at will. If he survived, he wouldn’t let a single one of them go!
The immortal spiritual power wound up Chen Xi’s meridians, gradually corroding his body. Where it passed, his blood dried up, and his essence was drained. In just a few seconds, it stole most of his life away.
As the threat of death grew closer, Chen Xi’s unwillingness and desire to survive reached their peak. Just then, the long-silent system unexpectedly made a sound: “Detected a life-threatening crisis. Host’s life functions are severely declining—80%… 55%… 20%… nearing death. Emergency protocol activated. Would the host like to participate in a lottery to escape this crisis?”
“Yes or No?”
“Yes!” Chen Xi’s heart leaped, and he responded loudly. To him, the sudden appearance of the system was like a drowning person seeing a piece of driftwood. Although he had never fully trusted the system, he could not afford to hesitate at this moment of life and death.
As for whether it was fortune or misfortune… What could be worse than death?
With his answer, the dice in the system were tossed high, rolling a few times before finally stopping. At the same time, a line of small text appeared in Chen Xi’s mind.
What is it?
Chen Xi stared at it, his heart racing. This was his last chance. Whether he could defy fate and change his destiny depended on this final gamble!
