Chapter 18
Which woman was it, who had secretly hooked up with her son?
She had to have someone investigate tomorrow.
Jinye’s lower abdomen felt a little heavy. She sat in her room for a while, but she decided she had to go down and meet people.
She changed into a knee-length ivory-colored Western dress. The style was simple, not too perfunctory and not too flashy to steal the spotlight. She only applied a little rouge and lipstick, let her hair fall naturally, and clipped a diamond-studded hair clip to her ear. Then she went downstairs.
“That’s Little Jin, isn’t it?” A military officer’s wife exclaimed. “I haven’t seen her in two years. Girls change so much when they grow up. I almost didn’t recognize her.”
These wives of military officers followed their husbands to different garrisons around the country, so it was normal for them not to see each other for a year or two.
“Yes, they say nieces resemble their aunts. Mrs. Xu’s face is a sight to behold in Suzhou, and Little Jin is even more beautiful than her.” Mrs. Liu also said.
Jinye felt a pang of guilt.
Fortunately, Mrs. Liu’s gaze was no different than before when she saw her. It had been over a year since they last met, and she shouldn’t be able to recognize her from just the back of her head.
Mrs. Wei smiled and beckoned, “Little Jin, come here.”
Although Jinye hadn’t put on much makeup, she had delicate features, fair skin, and black hair like clouds. Her figure wasn’t bony, thin where it should be thin, and with curves in the right places. She looked sweet and soft, like she would be easy to hug.
Two young gentlemen who were visiting the Warlord’s mansion for the first time were staring at her with wide eyes.
Ning Xiujun’s hand tightened around her wine glass.
As the star of the evening, she felt like she was being overshadowed by a mere hanger-on.
For some reason, she subconsciously glanced at Wei Liangchen. He was on the other side of the sofa, leaning back with his legs spread, looking carefree and relaxed, chatting with a few young gentlemen. He didn’t even look in her direction.
Ning Xiujun felt a sense of relief.
But she couldn’t stand Xu Jinye.
At that moment, Ning Xiujun felt as if she had been touched, and with a cry of “Oops,” the red wine glass in her hand tilted, about to spill onto Jinye’s white dress.
However, Jinye just turned sideways to greet a wife of a senior official.
As a result, Ning Xiujun’s red wine spilled onto her Aunt Wei, who was behind Jinye.
“Oh, you clumsy thing!” Aunt Wei was the elder sister of Warlord Wei.
If Warlord Wei was compared to an emperor, then Aunt Wei was the Grand Princess. She was wearing a dark green peony cheongsam and had her hair in a wave perm. Her domineering aura was overwhelming.
Jinye sometimes thought that a certain someone’s personality might have come from his aunt.
The same arrogance and domineering nature.
“Your eyesight is getting worse and worse, sister-in-law. My nephew is a dragon among men. Don’t bring any vulgar people into the house. If you give birth to some ugly and deformed children, lowering the overall standards of our Wei family, you will be a sinner for all time.”
Ning Xiujun’s face turned black.
Jinye almost laughed out loud.
That glass of red wine was clearly spilled by Ning Xiujun on purpose. Thankfully, she dodged, and Aunt Wei happened to be walking behind her. Now, Ning Xiujun had met her match.
Mrs. Wei’s face stiffened slightly, “Elder sister!”
It wasn’t a big deal to be splashed with a little red wine, but Aunt Wei and Mrs. Wei, as sisters-in-law, had always been at odds. She didn’t even acknowledge her, “Didn’t you hear that Miss Ling is coming back soon?”
Aunt Wei was a supporter of the Ling family and wanted her nephew to marry Miss Ling.
“So what?” Mrs. Wei was a supporter of the Ning family and followed the orders of Mr. Song, wanting her son to marry Miss Ning.
Aunt Wei smiled, “Of course, we should wait. Miss Ling is not only beautiful, but also a well-bred lady, proficient in all the arts, calligraphy, painting, music, and chess. Now, she has studied abroad, a graduate of Oxford University, fluent in seven foreign languages.
If she had been born in ancient times, she would have been a queen.
A wild chicken who only knows how to fight can’t compare to a golden phoenix.”
Aunt Wei launched into a barrage of words.
The Ning family mother and daughter looked very unhappy.
How many warlords were educated? They all rose to power through the barrel of a gun. Warlord Ning was a former street vendor, barely literate, a rough and tough man.
He hated it when people said he was uneducated.
Ning Xiujun also loved to fight, believing she was superior to timid, sheltered ladies and gentle scholars. She hated being called vulgar.
“Who are you calling a wild chicken?” she couldn’t help but retort.
Aunt Wei glanced at her, “I didn’t say you were one, why are you talking back?”
It was like she was saying Ning Xiujun was giving herself away.
Ning Xiujun was speechless, her face flushing red and white.
She had completely lost the arrogance she had when she asked Jinye to pour water.
Aunt Wei laughed, “Miss Ning, is it? One Ning, one Ling, it’s hard to tell them apart. My nephew is really stupid, and he’s also very loyal. Because your surname sounds similar to Ling, he’s a little nicer to you. It’s understandable that Miss Ning would misunderstand.”
“What do you mean?” Ning Xiujun’s eyes widened.
Jinye was also a little surprised.
Was that it?
She glanced at the men, Wei Liangchen was still in the same position, as if he hadn’t noticed what was happening.
“Alright, elder sister.” Warlord Wei came over to play peacemaker, “Miss Ning didn’t mean to do it.”
“She didn’t mean it, but she didn’t say sorry.”
That was true. She was subtly implying that Ning Xiujun was vulgar again.
Ning Xiujun was so shocked and angry that she couldn’t speak. She wanted to draw her gun. Ask her to apologize? No way.
They were afraid the two women would actually draw their guns.
Warlord Wei had no choice but to forcibly drag his elder sister away.
“Mrs. Ning, my elder sister is just being sarcastic. Don’t take her words to heart,” Mrs. Wei also said.
Mrs. Ning was naturally angry, but she had come here at the behest of Warlord Ning to facilitate the marriage. Her daughter had also acted out of line earlier. Now that there was a way out, she couldn’t afford to lose face.
At that moment, the music started playing.
“Alright, alright, let’s go dance,” Wei Jiaqi was quick-witted and quickly pulled Ning Xiujun to the dance floor.
The other wives of senior officials were also quick-witted and used the lively atmosphere to cover up the awkwardness.
“Brother, why are you still sitting? Go dance with Miss Ning,” Wei Jiaqi came over to pull Wei Liangchen, muttering, “I remember Mom didn’t invite Aunt, who invited her anyway?”
Wei Liangchen didn’t respond, his gaze swept towards a figure with her back to him.
Her slender waist was cinched in a simple dress, the lights made the diamonds on her ears sparkle, reflecting on her delicate face, making it look crystal clear. His eyes darkened slightly, and he lazily got up and walked towards her.
Meanwhile, Jinye was being pulled by Mrs. Wei to meet Zhou Siwei.
Dancing could foster feelings, Mrs. Wei pushed her, “Little Jin, go dance with Mr. Zhou.”
Zhou Siwei was handsome and tall, wearing a white suit that made him look elegant and refined, like a gentle jade. “Would Miss Xu like to dance?”
Jinye didn’t want to dance at all, she just wanted to find a place to lie down.
“Dance, why wouldn’t you dance?” a slightly deep voice suddenly sounded.
Jinye was startled.
She saw Wei Liangchen walking over, with a playful smile, “Mr. Zhou doesn’t know, my little sister Jinye dances beautifully, graceful as a dragon, elegant as a phoenix.”
Especially when he was on his hands, legs, and on the bed.
Seeing his dark, meaningful eyes, Jinye’s heart pounded. What was this guy up to?
With so many people around, she gritted her teeth and said, “Okay.”
She walked towards Zhou Siwei.
Wei Liangchen’s hand paused, his fingers curled up. He saw Zhou Siwei very gentlemanly take her hand and lead her to the dance floor.
Wei Liangchen’s pupils constricted.
“Brother, what are you standing there for? Sister Ning is waiting for you,” Wei Jiaqi pushed him, “Be careful, Dad will beat you up.”
Wei Liangchen looked at Ning Xiujun, grinned and said, “Okay.” He also strode towards the dance floor.
