The next day, Yang Niannian and Lu Shi-shen arrived in town, the village chief was already waiting there, he smiled flatteringly and handed the household registration book to Lu Shi-shen. “You guys go and get the procedures done quickly, the people are already at work, I’ll wait for you here.”

Lu Shi-shen took the household registration book and nodded, “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome, it’s my duty.” The village chief said with a smile.

Lu Shi-shen was a soldier, after the household registration matters were done, he would take Yang Niannian back to the army, right?  Once they left, he could finally relax, he hadn’t slept well these past two days, he had dark circles under his eyes.

The household registration procedures were simple, it took less than half an hour for Lu Shi-shen and Yang Niannian to move their household registration.  After leaving the government building, Yang Niannian directly tore out her page of the household registration book.  “I have nothing more to do with them.”

Yang Niannian wasn’t the original owner, the original owner had already died by jumping into the river, Huang Guihua wasn’t good to the original owner, and she wasn’t good to her either, she had no feelings for this family, she wouldn’t be morally bound and pretend to be a filial daughter.  From now on, she was Yang Niannian from the 21st century, she would only live for herself.

When they returned the household registration book to the village chief, the smile on his face became even more intense, “When are you going back to the army?”

“We’ll leave for the city this afternoon.”  Lu Shi-shen said truthfully.

The village chief was overjoyed, they were leaving earlier than he expected, he could finally get a good night’s sleep.  “It’s good to go back early, your career is important, don’t delay the army’s business.”

Yang Niannian heard the village chief’s words and her eyes almost curved into a smile, she was sure that the village chief wouldn’t be happy for long, he would be frowning again soon.  “Village chief, thank you, we’ll go back now.”

“Okay, okay, okay.”  The village chief nodded with a smile, after the two of them rode their bicycles away, he suddenly thought of something, he casually opened the household registration book and took a look.  He didn’t look before, but when he looked now, he felt dizzy and almost fainted.  Yang Niannian’s page was actually torn out, if the Yang family found out that the household registration book was missing a page, wouldn’t they pull his hair out?

…Yang Niannian and Lu Shi-shen returned home, as soon as they entered the courtyard, they saw Ma Xiuzhu with a long face, she glared fiercely at Yang Niannian when she saw her come back, then turned and went into the east room.  Lu Shi-shen parked his bicycle under the eaves and washed his face with well water, Yang Niannian went into the main room.  Guan Ailian was knitting a sweater, everyone else had gone to the fields to weed.

Yang Niannian asked curiously, “Sister-in-law, who made your mother-in-law unhappy again?”

Guan Ailian glanced at the east room, seeing that her mother-in-law didn’t come out, she whispered, “She knows that your father-in-law gave you 100 yuan, she had a fight with your father-in-law, now she’s looking down on everyone, she might pick on you again, be prepared.”

Yang Niannian snickered, “No wonder her face is as long as a ribbonfish, if she had to give away 100 yuan, it would probably feel like she was having a piece of her flesh cut off.”

Guan Ailian whispered, “Our mother-in-law is obsessed with money, this money was sent to them by Shi-shen, it’s only right that he gave you 100 yuan to buy a watch.  Don’t worry about your mother-in-law’s face, anyway, you’re leaving this afternoon, you won’t have to see her then, it’ll be out of sight, out of mind.”

“What are you two whispering about behind my back?”  Ma Xiuzhu suddenly came out of the east room, she pulled a long face, she didn’t like the look of her two daughters-in-law.  Don’t think she didn’t know, these two daughters-in-law were definitely plotting against her behind her back.

Guan Ailian smiled awkwardly, “Mom, my sister-in-law and brother are going to the city this afternoon, I was just chatting with her, isn’t that normal?”

Ma Xiuzhu glared at Guan Ailian, ever since her daughter-in-law came, her eldest daughter-in-law wasn’t honest anymore, one bad apple spoils the whole bunch.  She took out her anger on her younger daughter-in-law, “Go to the field and bring your dad some water.”

Lu Shi-shen, who happened to be walking to the entrance of the main room, answered, “I’ll go.”

Ma Xiuzhu was furious, she pulled a long face and said angrily, “Let Niannian go, you come inside with me, I have something to tell you.”  This younger son had been very cunning ever since he got a wife.

“It’s not important, just wait until I get back.”  Lu Shi-shen turned and went into the kitchen, he picked up the kettle and went out of the courtyard.

Ma Xiuzhu’s plan to order her younger daughter-in-law around failed, she stomped her foot in anger, went out of the courtyard, and complained to her neighbor about her grievances these past few days.  She just wanted to say some bad things about her two daughters-in-law, but before she could say a few words, the neighbor said more than she did, her tears flowed like water, she had suffered more than her for decades.  In the end, she became the one who didn’t know how good she had it, she went back home with a belly full of anger.

At noon, Guan Ailian cooked a big pot of noodles, she rinsed them with well water, made a bowl of garlic sauce and mixed it in, added some vinegar, made a cold noodle dish, and everyone ate it all up.  It was quite hot at noon, Lu Guozhi didn’t go to the fields to work, his younger son was about to leave for the city, he still felt a little reluctant, so he gathered the whole family in the main room and held a family meeting.

“I heard your brother say that you’re going to leave this house to him, it’s a good thing that you brothers can avoid arguing over the house and making a joke out of yourselves.  You’re in the army and can’t take care of the family, if anything happens at home, your brother will have to take care of it, your brother will do the work and you’ll pay the money, it’s fair.”  After a pause, he continued, “But don’t just focus on your career, come back and visit when you have time, your mother and I are getting old, our bodies are not as good as they used to be, we don’t ask you to take care of us in our old age, we just ask you to come back and see us more often.”

Although he didn’t say it directly, Lu Guozhi was actually very happy that his younger son didn’t fight for the house.  His eldest son was not very capable, but he had been loved by him since he was a child, he had been by his side all these years and had never left his sight, he had also given the family two fat grandsons, the Lu family’s bloodline had been passed on.  His younger son was not under his control, he didn’t want to control him too much, anyway, his younger son made a lot of money in the army, the couple could save up enough money in a year or two.  If they wanted to build a house, they could just build another one on another plot of land.

Hearing her father-in-law’s biased words, Yang Niannian felt a little sorry for Lu Shi-shen.  He was in the army, facing bullets and bombs, but in his father-in-law’s mouth, it was like he was on a tour.

Lu Shi-shen remained expressionless, “I’ll come back to see you when I have time.”

Ma Xiuzhu asked, “If Ruoling finds someone these next few days, maybe she’ll get married before the New Year, will you come back?”

“I might not have time.”  Lu Shi-shen said calmly.

Ma Xiuzhu, “Then you don’t have time, but your wife does, right?”

Lu Shi-shen, “The journey is too far, I’m not comfortable with her coming back alone.”

Ma Xiuzhu rolled her eyes, “She’s a grown woman, she can’t get lost on the way, can she?”

“Alright, it’s not set in stone, why are you in such a hurry?”  Lu Guozhi scolded, his younger son and daughter-in-law were going to the army, he didn’t know when they would be back next time, why make everyone unhappy?

Ma Xiuzhu heard this and pulled a long face without saying anything.  Lu Qingyuan and Guan Ailian also kept their heads down and didn’t say anything, they felt a little guilty about taking advantage of their brother, they felt bad about it.

Lu Guozhi had said all he wanted to say, he stood up, “Go pack your things, get ready to leave.”
