Chapter 172: Gifts from the Emperor and Empress Dowager

Watching his fidgety and anxious demeanor, Wang Jinhe couldn’t help but find it a bit amusing. “Are we just making baseless accusations, or do you really have no idea what’s going on in your own mind? To be capable of such things, you must have quite the audacity.”

“You…”

The county magistrate knew that this situation couldn’t continue. He couldn’t afford for anyone to discover the whereabouts of the young lady. If that happened, he would also be in deep trouble.

“I did this on my own; it has nothing to do with anyone else. Stop defaming others here. What benefit do you gain by falsely accusing others like this?” The county magistrate stared fiercely at Wang Jinhe and the others, angrily stating his position.

If he didn’t know what was going on, Wang Jinhe would have thought they were mistaken.

Just then, a voice from outside interrupted, “Is this the residence of Wang Jinhe?” Just as Wang Jinhe was about to respond, the inquiry continued.

Upon hearing the voice, everyone turned their attention to the entrance.

Upon seeing several soldiers, Wang Jinhe couldn’t help but feel puzzled. “Who are you?”

“We are here on behalf of the Emperor and Empress Dowager to deliver a gift.” One of the soldiers quickly explained, afraid of being misunderstood.

The county magistrate was relieved at the distraction.

Wang Jinhe was momentarily stunned, suddenly recalling what Su Yu had mentioned before – that the Emperor and Empress Dowager had prepared gifts for Xiao Bao and were sending them over.

“Thank you to the Emperor and Empress Dowager,” Wang Jinhe quickly expressed her gratitude.

Initially, Wang Jinhe thought it might be just a few small trinkets. However, to his surprise, there were several boxes, and seeing that they even required people to carry them, he realized that there must be a considerable amount of items inside.

“The Empress Dowager and the Emperor have given too much. A little one like him really doesn’t need so many things,” Wang Jinhe said with some concern.

Su Yu had bought a lot, and now with the Emperor and Empress Dowager sending so much, the two children would never run out of toys.

“These are not much. The Empress Dowager and the Emperor instructed that when you return to the capital,  Miss Wang can visit the palace with Xiao Bao in the future to see them,” the guard said, trying to please the Emperor and Empress Dowager. They had encountered many people seeking their favor, but they had never seen the Empress Dowager and the Emperor attach such importance to a child, especially a three-year-old.

The child’s future was boundless, and he would surely go far.

Wang Jinhe looked at the guard with some surprise. Were the Emperor and Empress Dowager so fond of inviting people over to play? Otherwise, why would they want Xiao Bao to visit the palace the first time they met?

“Okay, if that day comes, we will definitely bring Xiao Bao over,” Wang Jinhe naturally wouldn’t let Xiao Bao miss such an opportunity.

The county magistrate, who had been stubborn earlier, didn’t dare say anything when the soldiers appeared. He couldn’t even meet Wang Jinhe’s gaze.

When Wang Jinhe noticed him, he furrowed his brows slightly. “Do you have something else to say?”

“N-no… nothing,” the magistrate stammered. Would he dare to have something to say now? The Emperor and Empress Dowager were thinking of summoning people to the palace.

If they told the Emperor and Empress Dowager something, wouldn’t he be completely done for?

Thinking of this possibility, the county magistrate hastily left, vowing never to provoke Wang Jinhe again in the future. After returning, he must inform the young lady of this news.

“Wait a moment. If you dare to disclose our affairs to them, be careful of your hide. You dare to discuss matters related to the Emperor; you really have quite the audacity,” Wang Jinhe said expressionlessly, staring at the departing magistrate. She was quite intimidating.

Seeing Wang Jinhe’s demeanor, Su Yu couldn’t help but burst into laughter. Wang Jinhe gave him a glare, wondering why this guy was laughing so much.

“Su Yu, do you think I said something wrong?” Wang Jinhe looked at Su Yu with a disappointed expression, causing Su Yu to get goosebumps.

When it came to putting on an act, Su Yu thought Wang Jinhe was truly impressive; even Xiao Bao couldn’t compare to her.

“No, you didn’t say anything wrong. If you dare to leak this information, I’ll find a way to ensure you won’t hold any official position. If you don’t want to lose your position, then behave yourself,” Su Yu took over Wang Jinhe’s words, speaking bluntly.

She emphasized the importance of knowing what to do and what not to do. “Certain things shouldn’t be spoken of. If you say the wrong thing, you’ll be the one to suffer. Do you agree with what I’m saying?” Su Yu continued, not mincing his words.

This statement made the county magistrate not dare to contemplate the consequences if he disclosed the information to others.

Nervously laughing, the magistrate quickly reassured them, “Rest assured, I won’t say anything.”

“That would be best.”

The soldiers who came to deliver the gifts glanced at Wang Jinhe and then at Su Yu. Why did they feel like these two were using the reputation of the Empress Dowager and the Emperor to assert themselves here?

However, if it was just to send someone away, it wasn’t a big deal.

“Now that the gifts have been delivered, I’ll take my leave.”

“Stay for a meal before you leave?” Wang Jinhe quickly suggested. They had come from afar to deliver the gifts; if they couldn’t even offer them a meal, it would be truly embarrassing.

“No need to trouble yourself, Miss Wang. We still need to hurry back to report. We appreciate your kindness,” the soldier replied.

“You can report after having a meal. It’s settled then. Su Yu, keep them here. I’ll go prepare the food. Make sure they don’t leave,” Wang Jinhe entrusted Su Yu with the task, hoping that Su Yu would handle it well.

Su Yu looked at the soldiers, and they looked back at him. In the end, the soldiers compromised.

After the meal, carrying the local specialties given by Wang Jinhe, they hurriedly left, not daring to linger any longer.

“Su Yu, don’t you think that having a meal here is more uncomfortable for them than a matter of life and death?” Wang Jinhe said, watching the people leave in a hurry, feeling a bit speechless.

It’s not like their place was some dangerous wilderness. Was it necessary to run away so quickly?

Su Yu couldn’t help but laugh at this remark. “What kind of things are you saying? Who talks about themselves like that?”

Giving Su Yu a glance, Wang Jinhe said with a helpless expression, “Isn’t that what you think?”

The warning glare felt like a constant jabbing of eye knives at Su Yu.

Su Yu cleared his throat lightly; this was another one of her threats.

“Well, I don’t know about that, but I do think what you said is quite right; they did run really fast,” Su Yu said, nodding as he spoke, causing Wang Jinhe’s mouth to twitch involuntarily.

Could this person be a bit more sincere when saying these things?

“I won’t talk about this anymore, but do you think Gu Xiruo will find out about what happened here? If she does, how do you think she’ll react?” Wang Jinhe asked, genuinely curious.

This made Su Yu burst into laughter, “Are you so idle, thinking about all these hypotheticals?”
