Chapter 12: So Obedient
After just a day, Jiang Yaoyao found herself once again being dropped off at her apartment complex by Pei Heng.
Perhaps because she didn’t have to go to work and deal with those troublesome people on set, the fair-skinned beauty was in an exceptionally good mood. Her lips were rosy, and her smile was bright. As she got out of the car, she obediently raised her small hand and cheerfully said, “Goodbye, Mr. Pei!”
The handsome man gave her a polite nod, maintaining just the right amount of distance.
This reassured Jiang Yaoyao—at least he didn’t seem to have any ulterior motives toward her.
She had just taken a step forward when she suddenly remembered something and turned back.
“Mr. Pei, please wait a moment!”
The man in the car tilted his head slightly and saw a camellia flower, blooming in the fresh summer morning, swaying gently before disappearing into the brightly lit corridor of the building.
A few minutes later—
The delicate beauty rushed back out from the corridor, running so fast that her little face was tinged with a faint pink.
Her slightly damp, silky black hair clung to her snow-white neck, the striking contrast of colors making her beauty even more breathtaking.
Her dark, glistening eyes carried a hint of moisture, and as the sunlight illuminated her face, those deep black pupils transformed into a lighter tea color. Her petal-like lips curved into a soft smile.
“Mr. Pei, your jacket—”
She held out the neatly folded suit jacket with both hands.
Her soft, sweet voice continued, breathless from running, making her words sound even more delicate and endearing to the man’s ears.
“I’ve already washed and ironed it for you!”
So obedient.
Just like a little wife sending her beloved husband off to work.
Pei Heng reached out and took the jacket, his long, well-defined fingers brushing lightly over the fabric.
It felt as if the strings of his heart had been plucked forcefully by an invisible hand, sending ripples across his emotions that refused to settle.
Even after the car had driven out of the complex, his lowered gaze remained on the neatly folded jacket.
The corners of his lips held a faint smile, softening the sharp angles of his face.
His phone buzzed twice, and a message popped up.
Sheng Yujing: [I heard you got into a fight yesterday? You personally stepped in?]
Sheng Yujing: [And someone saw you carrying a woman out of a hotel? Did you take her home?!]
Pei Heng gently placed the jacket on the seat, then picked up his phone and typed a reply.
[She washed my clothes.]
The phone buzzed again almost immediately.
[?????]
[She? Pei Heng, who is “she”?]
[The one you took home? Or the little actress you’re backing today?]
The sharp features of Pei Heng’s face were reflected on the phone screen. His slender fingers tapped the keyboard a few more times.
[The person you like has never washed your clothes for you, has she, Sheng Yujing?]
Sheng Yujing: [Shut up!]
Pei Heng: [How pitiful.]
Pei Heng: [You wouldn’t understand. The clothes she washed smell so nice.]
Pei Heng: [Even if I told you, you wouldn’t get it.]
Almost the second the message was sent, an incoming call lit up his screen. With a flick of his long fingers, he answered. A slightly exasperated, carefree male voice came through.
“Pei Heng, what’s going on, bro?”
“The one who washed your clothes—was it the little sister-in-law we saw at the hotel, or the little actress you’re backing today?”
Pei Heng’s deep voice carried a hint of amusement, as if he was in a very good mood.
“Both.”
“Wait, wait, wait—”
On the other end of the call, Sheng Yujing dramatically gasped.
“Can you not use that flirty, soft voice with me? I’m getting goosebumps!”
A familiar cold chuckle came through the phone, making Sheng Yujing finally sigh in relief.
“Yes! That’s better. Now you sound normal again.”
Meanwhile, Pei Heng casually crossed his long legs, his indifferent gaze fixed on the road ahead, his tone calm and unwavering.
“But you did remind me of something.”
“If there’s no suitable script, I can have one written.”
After a brief pause, he added, “I’m starting a media company.”
“For her?”
A deep, quiet “Mm” was his only response.
Sheng Yujing nearly choked. “Bro, calm down!”
“Bro, what kind of love potion did that little beauty give you?”
“No, wait—are you sure you haven’t fallen for a scammer?”
Sheng Yujing was completely baffled by today’s Pei Heng, unable to make sense of anything.
He was used to playing the role of a playboy—experienced in the art of fleeting romances, well-versed in what should and shouldn’t be given to those flocks of pretty girls around him.
At most, it was just a way to pass time—sending a bag here, wiring some money there, taking them out for food and fun.
Not just him, but everyone in their circle operated like this.
Who the hell starts off a relationship by opening a company for someone?!
The more Sheng Yujing thought about it, the more wrong it felt. He straightened up, resting his elbows on his long legs, furrowing his brows.
“You’re acting like this because you’ve never been in a relationship before. You don’t understand how this works. No one goes all in like this right at the start. You—”
A deep voice interrupted him.
“We’re not together yet.”
“???????”
Sheng Yujing’s throat went dry. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“So… you’re in the process of pursuing her?”
On the other end of the call, Pei Heng’s phoenix eyes lowered slightly. A small figure flashed through his mind, and his gaze unconsciously softened.
“She’s a little timid. She’s a bit afraid of me.”
“So, I’m pursuing her secretly… trying my best not to let her notice.”
“……”
What the hell?!
Who could’ve imagined that the cold, untouchable, emotionless Pei Heng—known for being above it all—was actually a love-struck fool, secretly wooing someone while showering her with money?!
Rumors always said that the Pei family had produced two generations of passionate romantics, but when it came to Pei Heng, he was nothing but an iceberg.
Clearly, that was wrong.
This wasn’t an iceberg.
This was a glacier melting into a full-blown springtime lake!
Sheng Yujing was so shocked his words came out in broken pieces.
“You treat her this well… Aren’t you afraid she might get the wrong idea? What if she clings to you later, or—worse—pulls some influencer move, secretly gets pregnant, and tries to force you into marriage just to become Mrs. Pei?”
The man, who had been lazily half-closing his eyes, suddenly lifted his gaze.
A dark glint flickered in his deep eyes, burning with intensity.
“Yujing, you’re right.”
Hearing that, Sheng Yujing finally sighed in relief.
Finally, some sense!
With their status, how could they ever lower themselves to marry an unremarkable actress?
That would be a joke.
At the right age, they would all end up in business marriages, joining forces with families in their own circles, having a son or two, and building an unshakable empire.
Thank god Pei Heng had come to his senses.
Sheng Yujing grinned. “Now that’s more like it!”
But on the other end of the line, Pei Heng’s gaze remained fixed on the neatly folded suit jacket beside him.
His lips curled slightly.
His deep, unreadable eyes rippled with something unfathomable—detached yet brimming with unspoken emotion.
Then, he chuckled softly, his low voice laced with a lingering, almost indulgent tenderness.
“I know.”
