Chapter 12
Ye Xiaoxiao widened her round eyes. How could there be such a sharp-tongued person in the world!
“I wasn’t looking up words, I was reading a book.”
“Oh… whatever.”
Ye Xiaoxiao: “…” So annoying.
Grandpa was done quickly. Ye Xiaoxiao and the others read for a while. When the dough and filling were ready, they helped to make dumplings and boil water.
Ye Xiaoxiao was very clumsy at making dumplings. Everyone else’s dumplings could stand up, but hers were lopsided.
Grandpa Miao chuckled and showed Ye Xiaoxiao the correct way to make them.
By the end, she could actually make dumplings that looked like little ingots.
Ye Xiaoxiao felt a sense of satisfaction. She had always had a nanny at home who cooked, and her family members were workaholics who never cooked.
This atmosphere felt novel to her.
The water in the big pot boiled. Miao Fengshan carried the dumplings to the pot. When they floated up one by one, they were almost ready.
Miao Fengshan took bowls and plates to serve them. He also got some pickled vegetables.
In the countryside, they didn’t need a lot of dishes when eating dumplings. Besides, Grandpa only had one big pot, and it was inconvenient to stir-fry dishes after the dumplings were cooked.
Everyone was already very satisfied.
Dumplings were enough. Who needs a bicycle?
The four of them sat around the kang table, eating cabbage and pork dumplings, a sense of happiness arose.
After dinner, it was already dark.
There weren’t many entertainment activities, so people usually went to bed early.
But everyone in the house was excited today. Ye Changsheng was reading under a kerosene lamp.
Ye Xiaoxiao didn’t read. She said to Ye Changsheng, “You’ll ruin your eyesight if you do that.”
“Everyone studies like this.”
Of course, Ye Changsheng knew it was bad for his eyes, but what could he do?
Their teaching level was already lagging behind. Compared to students taking the national college entrance exam, they had no competitiveness at all. They needed to work even harder.
“Let’s go to the post office and see if there’s anything for me.”
It had been a month. Even if Uncle Duan put him under house arrest, he should be released by now.
Ye Changsheng, “Okay.”
“Miao Fengshan! Come out!!”
A shrill voice suddenly came from outside, breaking the peace of the small courtyard.
The voice was full of anger, sounding like someone was coming to cause trouble.
Unfortunately, it was already dark outside, and they couldn’t see who it was.
Miao Fengshan was also puzzled.
He opened the door and walked out, wanting to see who was visiting at this late hour.
Ye Xiaoxiao and the others also quickly got off the kang, afraid that Grandpa would be taken advantage of.
At the entrance of the courtyard, Li He was pulling a furious woman, “Alright, this has nothing to do with Uncle Fengshan. Stop making a fuss.”
The woman shook off Li He, “How can it have nothing to do with him? It’s all because of their family that this trend started. Now they’re just walking away, leaving us with nothing. How are we supposed to live…”
Miao Fengshan came out with a flashlight and saw who it was. It was Li He and his wife, Zhang Guimei.
“It’s you two. What’s wrong… is there a problem with today’s wages?”
Li He blushed secretly and said weakly, “Uncle, the wages are fine…”
Miao Fengshan looked at them, “Then what’s going on?”
Zhang Guimei pushed Li He aside and stood in front, “Uncle, it’s like this. Did your family start this trend of selling seeds at the movies? Now that your family has made money, you’re just walking away, leaving us with all these seeds.
Tell me! Does your family have a responsibility? Should you be responsible?”
Ye Xiaoxiao had just walked out and heard this. She was shocked by the woman’s shamelessness.
Worried that Miao Fengshan would soften, Ye Xiaoxiao spoke first, “Auntie, the country didn’t use your face to research bulletproof vests. It’s a real waste of resources.”
Ye Changsheng, “Pfft…”
Zhang Guimei, “What do you mean?”
Ye Xiaoxiao looked behind Zhang Guimei, at the mule cart at the entrance. There were several large sacks on it, probably full of seeds.
Wow!
It seemed like they had bought a lot.
No wonder she was so upset.
She spread her hands, looking innocent, “It means that it has nothing to do with us that you learned to sell seeds. If you really want to pursue this, Auntie, you should pay your tuition first.”
“You… you guys… if you don’t help us get rid of these seeds, I… I’m not leaving.”
Zhang Guimei loved to make a fuss and take advantage of others. She was nothing like her honest and kind husband, Li He.
Seeing her act like a spoiled child, Miao Fengshan’s face turned cold.
“Li He, is that what you think too?”
“Uncle Fengshan, I’m so sorry. I’ll take her away.”
Li He still knew right from wrong, but he couldn’t control Zhang Guimei.
Before Li He could pull her away, Zhang Guimei started yelling, “It’s unfair! My own husband is helping outsiders bully me! I don’t know if he’s been bewitched by some vixen.”
It was late at night, and there were occasional dog barks outside the wall.
Zhang Guimei’s yelling almost woke up the neighbors.
“What are you talking about?” Ye Changyuan was already angry, but when he heard her slander, he was about to charge at her.
But Li He still had to protect his wife in front of outsiders. He quickly stopped Ye Changyuan.
“Changyuan, don’t get angry. Uncle will take your aunt home.”
But he could stop Ye Changyuan, but he couldn’t stop Ye Xiaoxiao.
While Zhang Guimei was spreading rumors, she charged forward, grabbed the woman’s hair, and slapped her.
It was her first time fighting. Ye Xiaoxiao used all her strength.
Her arm swung in a full circle.
“Auntie, you came to our house to make trouble and extort money, right? Let’s go to the police station and see how the police judge this matter. I’m warning you, slander and insult are punishable by law!”
Ye Xiaoxiao was still holding Zhang Guimei’s hair. She was taller than the short woman, and the posture was quite convenient.
Zhang Guimei let out a sharp scream, “Ah!!! Li He… Li He, you’re just watching someone bully your wife?”
Li He was still stunned. He was busy stopping Ye Changyuan, who was quite strong.
But he had known Ye Xiaoxiao for a month. She was just a delicate little girl. She probably didn’t even do any work. Her hands didn’t have any calluses at all.
His wife, who was only a bully at home, was actually beaten up by a little girl, crying and screaming.
Shameful!
Ye Changsheng went over and pulled Ye Xiaoxiao, taking the opportunity to step on Zhang Guimei several times.
Miao Fengshan, “Get out!! Get out of our house. If you come to make trouble again, we’ll definitely call the police!”
Li He quickly pulled his wife away.
It wasn’t until the mule cart rattled away that the four of them in the courtyard looked at each other and smiled.
Ye Changyuan, “Xiaoxiao, I didn’t expect you to be so fierce. You actually charged at her and hit her.”
Ye Xiaoxiao was embarrassed, “It’s my first time doing this.”
Miao Fengshan said with concern, “Were you hurt just now? That woman is not easy to deal with. Stay away from her in the future.”
Ye Xiaoxiao, “Grandpa, I’m fine. But will she come to bother you again?”
Miao Fengshan, “Grandpa is not afraid of her. If she comes to make trouble again, Grandpa has ways to deal with her.”
Miao Fengshan had been teaching in Songlin Town for many years. He knew quite a few people, so he didn’t have to be afraid of Zhang Guimei.
Ye Xiaoxiao, “Grandpa is amazing!”
Miao Fengshan, “Hahaha…”
A hearty laugh echoed through the courtyard.
Ye Changsheng shook his head. How come Grandpa was also becoming mischievous?
But he didn’t dislike this atmosphere.
After this incident, he felt that everyone’s relationship had become closer.
