The next morning, Shang Xinglu woke up feeling refreshed.
Yesterday had been the best day she’d had in the past two months.
The night before had been the best sleep she’d had in the past two months as well.
Okay, okay, it seemed like she, Shang Xinglu, was finally going to have a turnaround!
Shang Xinglu stood on the bed, hands on her hips, laughing loudly.
“People, if they’re sick, they still have to get treated.”
Marilyn: “…”
Shang Xinglu: “Where’s my medicine? I want my medicine!”
Marilyn gave her a confused look.
Shang Xinglu touched her face.
“What’s wrong with my face? Did I disfigure it?”
“No, Madam, you still look great.”
Well, you’ve had such a good sleep, but it might not be due to the medicine…
Shang Xinglu only heard the first part and didn’t care about the rest.
She continued standing on the bed with her hands on her hips, laughing, “Haha! Of course, your madam has a peerless beauty!”
Marilyn: “…”
No, she decided to step out and wait for the madam to finish her outburst.
Shang Xinglu was fully recovered and was looking for something to do.
But to get her to go back to work, even if she wanted to, not only would her family protest, but even Xue Shaoying and Shi Rui would be raising banners in opposition.
She remembered what Lin Heng had said last night. Shang Xinglu rummaged through several apps linked to Lin Heng.
…Nothing.
She searched again, still nothing!!!
Shang Xinglu angrily shut off her phone. Damn it, how could Lin Heng, the coward, dare to play tricks on her!
She was about to call Lin Heng and blast him, when Marilyn came in holding a stack of letters. “Madam, these are for you. I see one of them is from your husband’s company. Do you want to take a look?”
Shang Xinglu opened it.
It was indeed a lawyer’s directory.
Shang Xinglu: “…”
She didn’t expect Lin Heng to be so primitive.
A generation gap! This was definitely a generation gap!
Facing a man like this with a generation gap, it was clear she needed a divorce, a damn divorce!!!
The lawyer directory was all in English, and Shang Xinglu didn’t really understand why she wasn’t sent a Chinese version.
Maybe… because the English one looked more high-end???
There was a long list inside, with introductions.
Shang Xinglu originally planned to pick someone at random, but one of the names caught her attention.
LockhartGardner.
Shang Xinglu got excited again.
She had thought that there was only Stark Industries here, and that was already amazing, but to her surprise, there was also a lawyer firm from a TV show!
TV shows always have special powers, so choosing them was definitely a good choice.
Just like her, she had her own special power!
…No.
Shang Xinglu supported her chin and thought carefully.
Oh my god, what was her special power? Ridiculousness at 100%… does that count?
Shang Xinglu sat on the couch, her face filled with shadow.
The lawyer firm had been chosen, and Shang Xinglu called Lin Heng, saying she had made a decision.
Lin Heng seemed to be busy. He told her to wait, then quickly spoke in English with Fang Liao. But because they were far apart, it seemed like he was avoiding her. His words were vague, and Shang Xinglu only caught a few terms like “evidence,” “Interpol,” and “don’t contact her.”
Just those words alone made Shang Xinglu’s nerves tense up.
Soon, Lin Heng said “Hello” in a gentle tone.
Shang Xinglu relaxed a bit.
Lin Heng asked, “Do you want to come with me?”
Shang Xinglu’s ears perked up.
She felt a sense of déjà vu. Didn’t he ask her this the last time they went to the main house?
…but why would they need to fly to the United States for just a divorce?
Shang Xinglu thought to herself, with my IQ, I bet it’s just a divorce, why do we have to fly overseas!
Shang Xinglu confidently said, “I’ll drive myself.”
Then, on the other end, there was a second of silence.
Lin Heng sighed silently. “I really suspect you have some strange fantasy about road trips.”
“I… I don’t!” Shang Xinglu protested.
“But you keep wanting to drive to the U.S., so I have no choice but to think that.”
Shang Xinglu: “…”
Lin Heng: “…………”
Shang Xinglu: “…………”
What the heck?
Get married, fly to the U.S.; get a divorce, fly to the U.S.! Lin Heng, do you even take the divorce seriously or are you just focused on your work?!
Then, weakly, she said, “Okay, I’ll go with you…”
Lin Heng satisfied with a “Mm.”
Shang Xinglu took Lin Heng’s “ride” and once again arrived in the United States.
But this time, she didn’t stay with Lin Heng. She booked a hotel.
After resting the whole day at the hotel, on the third day, Shang Xinglu went to the lawyer’s office at the agreed time.
The lawyer handling her divorce case was a man named David Lee.
He wasn’t very tall, a little bald, and spoke very quickly.
He assumed that since Shang Xinglu was a “divorcee,” she would cry as soon as she arrived, so he handed her some chocolate-covered raisins right away.
Shang Xinglu was lighthearted, especially since the food was delicious. Even though she didn’t particularly like sweets, she kept eating them happily, one after another.
Since Shang Xinglu had signed a prenuptial agreement, she wasn’t expecting to get much.
David Lee crossed his legs and asked, “Has your husband ever cheated?”
“Why Don’t You Just Take the Money?”
Shang Xinglu: “…No.”
David Li: “Does your husband have any bad habits?”
Shang Xinglu: “No.”
David Li: “Does your husband have any dark secrets? Anything at all. If you give us a hint, we can investigate it ourselves.”
Shang Xinglu thought carefully and then shook her head. “Actually, no.”
David Li: “…”
He had encountered husbands who hired prostitutes, had affairs, were scumbags, into BDSM, and even those who had no issues but still had wives who vented years of complaints during a divorce.
As a professional lawyer, David Li could tolerate the venting, but he had never seen a divorce client who couldn’t find a single flaw in her husband!
…If there were no issues, then why get a divorce?
Well, since she was here, she was still a customer.
David Li continued, “We’ve already been in touch with the opposing lawyer, and the preliminary discussions have gone well. I think we can get you this amount…”
He pushed a piece of paper over.
Shang Xinglu counted the zeros.
“So much?!”
David Li smiled proudly. “Yes.”
Shang Xinglu: “Is Lin Heng stupid?! He could have settled with me for just a few billion!”
David Li scratched his ear, in disbelief.
“How much?”
“A few billion, and I would’ve happily divorced him!” Shang Xinglu said.
David Li: “…”
Why are you even getting divorced then?
The fourth day came, and the opposing lawyer, Lin Heng, David Li, and Shang Xinglu sat across from each other in a meeting room.
Beforehand, David Li repeatedly advised Shang Xinglu, “You’d better not speak directly to Mr. Lin. Let us handle the talks.”
Shang Xinglu nodded and silently agreed. She was ready!
The official discussion about the division of assets began.
The two lawyers talked animatedly. Although it wasn’t exactly a friendly discussion, at least they hadn’t started arguing.
Shang Xinglu and Lin Heng just stared at each other in silence.
The lawyers continued their conversation.
Shang Xinglu kept staring silently at Lin Heng.
Finally, the lawyers came to an agreement on the amount. In the face of such a large sum in a divorce case, David Li couldn’t hide his excitement as he said, “Mr. Lin is quite generous. I think this is his bottom line, but it’s much better than what we expected.”
Saying this, David Li didn’t push a piece of paper over this time but instead pushed a list.
Shang Xinglu quickly glanced over it.
She slammed the list on the table with a serious face.
David Li was a bit surprised.
…Could it be that she wasn’t satisfied with this?
Shang Xinglu pondered for a moment and felt that something wasn’t quite right about the money.
After some thought, only one reason came to her mind.
Shang Xinglu said, “The other day wasn’t something you instructed, Mr. Lin. Aren’t you being too polite? Suddenly giving me so much, I don’t understand your intentions.”
David Li’s face turned pale. “Miss Shang, if you have any requests, let me discuss them with the opposing lawyer.”
The silent Lin Heng, irritated by the title “Mr. Lin,” finally spoke.
The divorce hadn’t even happened yet, and she was already acting like a stranger…
He frowned and said, “I’ve already arranged for someone to help you manage your finances. What else do you need to understand?”
The opposing lawyer’s face also went pale. “Mr. Lin, please don’t speak directly with Miss Shang. Any requests, let me handle them with the opposing lawyer.”
But no one paid attention to the lawyers.
Shang Xinglu was really angry now.
Didn’t he want to save her some money?!
Just asking about his intentions, and now Mr. Lin was mocking her… As if she would go bankrupt the moment she left him.
Shang Xinglu stood up suddenly, saying, “Who do you think I am? Take your money! We’ll sign and leave. It’s that simple.”
David Li: “…Miss Shang??!!!”
Lin Heng also stood up. For once, he was aggressive, saying, “No money? Do you think you can live in a small house? Will your bed fit in there? Can you afford a personal assistant like Mary? Without Mary, can you even manage by yourself? With no money, can you buy haute couture every season? Can you afford a new yacht? Throw a party? Live a comfortable life like this until you’re buried in the ground?”
The two lawyers were already exhausted and had stopped talking.
They were getting divorced…
Could they stop focusing on intentions and their future lives, those vague, intangible things, and just care about the money?
The lawyers all had deadpan expressions.
Why were they getting divorced?
Shang Xinglu stood on her side of the table.
Her eyes were wet.
She stared at Lin Heng, her face pale.
Then, Shang Xinglu shakily raised her finger, pointing at herself.
In disbelief, she said, “So, in your eyes, I’m just someone who eats, drinks, plays, and lives for pleasure?”
Lin Heng: “…”
It seems like it’s all true.
But it also seems like it’s all wrong…
“Louise, that’s not what I meant…” Lin Heng was at a loss for words.
Shang Xinglu grabbed her bag and angrily stormed out.
So angry! So angry!
How could she be afraid of the fluffy Lin Heng?!
What’s so great about money?!
She got to the elevator and suddenly realized—having money… might actually be pretty great.
What was she thinking earlier?!
She angrily turned around and bumped straight into Lin Heng’s chest, who had chased after her.
Ignoring the pain in her nose, she grabbed his tie and pulled him down.
“I’ll sign! I’ll sign! Let’s see if you go bankrupt!”
Lin Heng’s face was calm, but when he looked down at her, his eyes were filled with emotions growing wildly.
He took her hand that was holding the tie and whispered, “Why not take the money? Are you stupid?”
Shang Xinglu suddenly blushed.
How dare he look at her like that! It’s so annoying!
