Chapter 78: Jiang Banyue in Her Previous Life
Jiang Banyue floated in midair, looking down at Shen Yunhe. He sat there, blankly holding her lifeless body. Both the Shen and Jiang families were present, and everyone was urging Shen Yunhe to let go of her, to lay her to rest peacefully.
Jiang’s mother and father cried beside her, “You unfilial daughter, how could you make us, these old folks, bury you, a young one? Jiang Banyue, get up, husband, why haven’t you taken me with you? My daughter is only in her twenties! How can I live on without her?”
Jiang Banyue floated beside her mother, crying and kneeling to bow to them.
“Mom, Dad, I’m sorry. I was unfilial. I’ll repay you in my next life.”
The funeral went as planned, with a light drizzle falling from the sky. Jiang Banyue watched as her coffin was slowly lowered into the grave. Shen Yunhe, eyes red, went mad and lunged at the coffin, only to be held back by others.
“Wife, wife, don’t leave me. Jiang Banyue, I love you, don’t leave me!”
Jiang Banyue froze in shock. Shen Yunhe had never said such words to her before. They were always so reserved, never uttering sweet words. The most frequent words they exchanged were about meals. She had always thought that Shen Yunhe didn’t love her.
Once the funeral was over, Shen Yunhe refused the family’s suggestion to leave the children at home for others to take care of. The children had already lost their mother, and he couldn’t be absent from their lives anymore. No matter how hard or tiring it would be, he would raise all three of them himself. Otherwise, Jiang Banyue’s spirit would resent him.
Jiang Banyue floated beside Shen Yunhe, watching him care for the children tirelessly, day and night, while still going to work. She felt heartbroken. When Liu Juan came pretending to visit the children, she became furious with anger.
She witnessed Shen Yunhe and the children’s brief yet tragic lives, her heart breaking as she shed blood tears. She became consumed by madness, slowly forgetting who she was, drifting alone in the mortal world.
A century later, she floated into a cake shop and sat in the corner, lost in thought. Two girls came in, each holding a slice of durian cake, sitting across from her and eating it slowly.
The two girls chatted as they ate, and Jiang Banyue stared blankly at the durian cake.
“This shop’s durian cake is so delicious!” one of the girls said with a satisfied smile.
“I’ve been reading this book lately, it’s so sweet. The male lead treats the female lead like a treasure. She also loves durian cake, so the male lead planted a whole field of durian for her. It’s so sweet, I wish I could transmigrate into the book and become the female lead.”
Jiang Banyue tilted her head, confused. “What does ‘transmigrate into a book’ mean?”
The other girl teased, “I heard that if you meet someone with the same name, you’ll transmigrate into a book.”
After the girls left, Jiang Banyue floated into the cake shop’s kitchen and watched the baker making cakes. She licked her lips and leaned in close to the cake, inhaling its sweet aroma.
“Sweet… so delicious.”
From then on, Jiang Banyue stayed in the kitchen, watching the baker make cakes. Eventually, she learned how to make cakes herself. At night, when the shop closed and she was alone, she would use the machines to make cakes herself. But once the cakes were finished, she couldn’t eat them—she could only smell them.
Ten years passed. The cake shop was torn down, and Jiang Banyue secretly hid the baking equipment. Soon, the area was turned into a villa district. After the villas were built, a family of three moved in.
A couple with their eight-year-old daughter, who had a disability and could not walk, could only sit in a wheelchair. Jiang Banyue, obediently, stayed in the attic of the villa, afraid to go downstairs, worried she might scare the family.
The girl’s name was Su Jian. Because she couldn’t walk, she stayed home all the time. The man went to work, and the woman stayed home to look after the child.
Su Jian, feeling bored, slowly crawled up to the attic. Jiang Banyue, watching from the attic, observed Su Jian crawling across the floor. Suddenly, Su Jian looked up and stared at her.
“Who are you?” she asked.
Jiang Banyue shook her head. “I don’t know.”
Su Jian smiled happily. “You must be the good friend sent to me. How wonderful!”
Jiang Banyue tilted her head. “Is that so?”
Su Jian climbed up to the attic to play with Jiang Banyue, and the two became the best of friends, sharing everything.
With Jiang Banyue by her side, Su Jian became brighter and more cheerful, laughing more often.
At night, they stayed awake, chatting with each other.
“I really want to go running, go to an amusement park, but I can’t walk,” Su Jian said, looking at her legs. She hit them in frustration.
Jiang Banyue waved her hand, and the white curtains on the window fluttered. Su Jian smiled. “You possess me, and we can go out together. Let’s eat skewers, go to the amusement park, do all the rebellious things I’ve wanted to do for so long! Mom always stopped me, but tonight, I want to go wild and do everything!”
“Okay.”
Jiang Banyue entered Su Jian’s body, and they ran downstairs at lightning speed. They raced through the empty streets, growing faster and faster, feeling a rush of freedom. Eventually, they stopped in front of a night market, where a vendor was grilling skewers.
Jiang Banyue’s heart echoed with a voice: “Skewers! I want skewers!”
She ordered dozens of skewers, eating as she walked. They reached an amusement park, but the gates were closed. Jiang Banyue flew in, sitting on a carousel. With a flick of her finger, the lights on the carousel lit up, and it began to turn slowly. She stayed there, riding the carousel all night, until dawn. Only then did she return to the villa.
Time passed, and one stormy night, a family of three and one ghost fell into a deep sleep. Three burglars, wearing black masks and armed with knives, broke into the villa. They pried open the door and snuck inside.
One of the burglars stopped to stare at a family photo on the wall. “This woman is pretty.”
A wicked thought crossed his mind, and they found their way to the master bedroom. The couple was sleeping soundly, unaware of the danger approaching. The burglars attacked, killing the man in the bed with knives. The woman woke up in terror, and she too was killed.
The bed was soaked in blood.
The burglars searched the house, hastily gathering gold chains and stuffing them into bags. They ran downstairs.
Jiang Banyue heard the commotion and floated down. When she saw what had happened, rage filled her. She charged downstairs, grabbing a cake-cutting knife and trying to stab the burglars, but the knife passed right through them. She stabbed them frantically, but nothing happened.
Helpless, she watched them leave. As they opened the door to escape, Su Jian woke up. Sitting in her wheelchair, she came out of the room, startling the burglars.
“No!” Jiang Banyue screamed, “Su Jian, go back to your room, quickly, get away from here!”
But it was too late. Jiang Banyue watched in horror as Su Jian fell to the floor, covered in blood. She couldn’t do anything.
“No…”
Blood tears streamed from Jiang Banyue’s eyes as she screamed in madness. The windows shook with the force of her scream. The burglars, frightened, fled the scene.
When they turned around, their eyes widened in terror. Su Jian, covered in blood, was holding a knife, walking toward them like a demon from hell. The burglars tried to move but couldn’t. One by one, they were struck down.
Jiang Banyue continued stabbing, not stopping until they were all motionless. The thunder roared outside, illuminating everything inside the house. The living room was soaked in blood, and everyone lay in pools of it. Jiang Banyue stood in the blood, holding a sharp knife.
A voice echoed in her mind.
“Su Jian, from now on, you are Su Jian. You must be happy, always stay happy.”
Su Jian dropped the knife and collapsed to the floor. The blood from the villa flowed out into the street. Neighbors reported the incident, and the police sent Su Jian to the hospital.
When Su Jian woke up, she had forgotten everything except for the voice in her mind: “Su Jian, Su Jian, you must be happy, always stay happy.”
After an investigation, the police found out that Su Jian was an orphan and sent her to an orphanage. A year later, an earthquake struck, and the orphanage collapsed, killing everyone inside.
Jiang Banyue floated out of Su Jian’s body. A sharp pain gripped her head, and everything came rushing back. She was Jiang Banyue, who had died during childbirth. Her children and husband had all perished.
She couldn’t accept this truth and refused to acknowledge that she was Jiang Banyue.
“No, I’m not Jiang Banyue, I’m not. I’m Su Jian. I’m just Su Jian. This can’t be real. I’m not Jiang Banyue!”
When she opened her eyes again, she had forgotten everything, except that her name was Jiang Banyue. Her mind was filled with horrific images, and she unconsciously formed these images into a story. Suddenly, she remembered a girl’s words.
“If you meet someone with the same name, you will transmigrate into a book.”
“I transmigrated into a book… This person is also called Jiang Banyue.”
