Chapter 13.1: Su Qingyin Goes Crazy with Jealousy
Su Qingning recognized the voice as familiar and turned to see a pair of elderly people in splendid attire, accompanied by several young men and women, hurrying towards her.
The group looked at her with eyes full of concern and pity.
It suddenly reminded her that the original owner had a wealthy maternal family.
Unfortunately, merchants in the Great Qian Kingdom were looked down upon.
That scumbag Su Bingsheng borrowed money from his father-in-law to study and earn his title, only to turn his back on them and suppress his father-in-law’s family at every turn.
After the Gu family left, not only did they prevent him from seeing the original owner, but they also frequently used her name to extort money from the Gu family.
The Gu family thought that by giving money, Prime Minister Su would treat the original owner better. Unfortunately, all that money ended up in the pockets of Concubine Shen, while the original owner was locked in the backyard, still eating leftovers.
Perhaps influenced by the emotions lingering in the original owner’s body, Su Qingning couldn’t help but feel teary-eyed as she looked at her maternal family, who genuinely cared for her.
“Grandfather, Grandmother, Cousin, Cousin!”
Grandmother Lin rushed over and hugged Su Qingning tightly. When she touched her, she realized that she was so thin that she felt like nothing but bones. Tears immediately streamed down her face.
“Oh my—my Ningning! Boohoo… it’s all because your grandmother and grandfather are useless that you’ve suffered!”
“I have dreamed of seeing you for years; who would have thought… who would have thought… Boohoo… after finally seeing you, you would be implicated and exiled…”
Lin, being the matriarch of a large family, quickly composed herself after a few sobs. She immediately handed a small bundle to her mother-in-law, Liu Qing.
“Dear in-laws, this is a small token of our intention. Please take care of yourselves on this journey and look after our Ningning.”
Liu Qing’s expression softened, but she did not accept the bundle.
“Since it’s a gift from your family, let Ningning keep it. Rest assured, Ningning is now part of the Xiao family, and we will never mistreat her.”
Seeing that the Xiao family members were all sincere and upright, as the rumors suggested, Lin felt much more at ease.
She pulled Su Qingning aside and handed her a large bundle.
The prison clothes for exiles were very thin and couldn’t hide much. She also sewed a small pouch for Su Qingning and quietly tied it around her waist.
The small pouch looked bulging, clearly stuffed with banknotes.
“Child, this is the pocket money your grandmother has prepared for you. The Xiao family are all good people, and your grandmother feels reassured about you on this journey. But remain vigilant; even those who seem kind on the surface must be watched closely to avoid being easily harmed.”
“Mm, I understand. You can rest assured, Grandmother.”
Although she was now a bona fide tycoon of the Great Qian Kingdom, those banknotes were nothing to her.
However, genuine human affection was invaluable, and having elders care for her so sincerely moved her heart. She then earnestly advised:
“Grandmother, you should head south soon as well. The capital has had no rain for three consecutive months, and several northern provinces are facing droughts and locust plagues. It seems that these years are not favorable; it would be best for you to escape south for a while.”
Upon hearing Su Qingning’s words, Lin frowned, recalling recent news from the northern borders. She felt that what she said made sense.
“Alright, I will discuss this with your grandfather when I return. I heard that many trade markets have recently emerged in the Lingnan region, and it’s not as desolate as rumored.”
“We might as well go there first and settle down; it would also provide some support when you arrive.”
Hearing this, Su Qingning’s eyes brightened.
