“Jiang Cheng, come to my office after school.”
The old lady had made up her mind.
Compared to missing out on a linguistic genius, restraint was nothing.
“Understood, teacher.”
As Jiang Cheng spoke, she stepped forward to help the old lady down from the podium.
“Take your time.”
She had long noticed that the old lady had trouble with her legs. The old lady being assisted felt a bit awkward but also somewhat pleased.
She was pleased with Jiang Cheng’s thoughtfulness and delighted by her attentiveness.
No matter how you looked at it, this child had the makings of a great translator.
“Don’t forget after school.”
Unable to resist her fondness for talent, the old lady couldn’t help but remind her. Jiang Cheng immediately smiled and said, “Don’t worry, I’ll go right after school.”
Satisfied, the old lady walked out of the classroom and happened to meet the next class’s politics teacher, Mr. Hu.
Mr. Hu took a step back and looked at the class sign.
Had he taken a wrong turn?
He then glanced at his watch.
The time was correct too.
How strange, when had Teacher Lü ever kept students after class?
Mr. Hu was a small, fifty-year-old man with a short goatee that trembled with his smile.
“Teacher Lü just left?”
The old lady, also known as Teacher Lü, gave a cold hum and slightly tilted her head.
“Oh, oh—you go first, you go first.”
Mr. Hu immediately stepped aside to let Teacher Lü pass, unable to resist adding, “Take your time.”
Teacher Lü left coldly without a response.
Mr. Hu didn’t mind.
“Ding-ding-ding—”
The class bell rang, and Mr. Hu stepped onto the podium, glancing at Jiang Cheng.
“This student’s seat is strategically located, perfect for both offense and defense, very good, very good.”
Jiang Cheng, sitting next to the lectern, immediately stood up, quick to seize the opportunity.
“Thank you for the praise and affirmation, teacher. My name is Jiang Cheng.”
Mr. Hu’s goatee twitched. Had he praised her?
“Alright, alright, sit down.”
Mr. Hu didn’t care where Jiang Cheng sat; it was just his nature to joke around. Standing on the podium, he took out the quotations and led the class in studying.
In this era, everyone could recite the quotations.
Politics class was also the most enthusiastic course for the students, with their simple and sincere admiration for the teacher.
After a passionate politics class, many people’s eyes instinctively fell on Jiang Cheng.
Jiang Cheng took the lead, using her geographical advantage to be the first to rush out of the classroom, heading downstairs towards the school gate.
“Grandma Shen, the teacher called me to the office, wait for me for a while!”
“Alright! No rush.”
After hearing Grandma Shen’s reply, Jiang Cheng turned and ran towards the office.
At the gate, Grandma Shen stood up with some concern, and Shen Xing’s little face was also tense.
In everyone’s usual impression, being called to the teacher’s office was not a good thing.
Uncle Wang at the gate thought for a moment and said, “It’s nothing, Jiang Cheng isn’t the type to cause trouble.”
Grandma Shen: It’s true she doesn’t cause trouble, but she’s also not afraid of it!
The only one who had glimpsed Jiang Cheng’s true nature, Grandma Shen felt a sense of loneliness at the top.
Lin Chengyuan, who had come to pick up He Dan, had a look of understanding in his eyes, a slight sneer at the corner of his mouth.
Only three days into night school and already being criticized by the teacher, truly a hopeless case.
“Chengyuan.”
He Dan came out.
Lin Chengyuan took two steps forward, a perfect match in looks, and many night school students looked at them with envy.
“Her man comes to pick her up every day.”
“I heard he works at the machinery factory.”
“How come He Dan’s life is so good?”
The voices were not low, and Lin Chengyuan and He Dan heard them clearly.
Lin Chengyuan straightened his back, enjoying such praise deep down, and He Dan also regained some of the confidence that Jiang Cheng had shaken.
No matter how capable Jiang Cheng was, Lin Chengyuan was hers.
“What mistake did Jiang Cheng make?”
Lin Chengyuan’s question caught He Dan off guard.
“What?”
“She herself shouted that she was called to the teacher’s office, truly a piece of rotten wood.”
“You’re the rotten wood!”
Shen Xing’s little face was cold as he stepped forward, glaring at Lin Chengyuan, who had deliberately spoken loudly, “Talking behind someone’s back is not what a real man does!”
“Right!”
Shen Yue’s education was limited, but that didn’t stop her from standing with her brother and Sister Jiang Cheng.
Lin Chengyuan, having been embarrassed by the two children and remembering the incident in the morning where Shen Xing and Jiang Cheng had mocked him, immediately declared with self-righteousness:
“If Jiang Cheng were any good, why would she be called to the office? She didn’t even finish elementary school, what could she possibly understand in class? She’s just pretending to be something she’s not!”
“She’s just fooling you kids, I advise you to stay away from her.”
He Dan quickly tugged at Lin Chengyuan, but he didn’t get the hint.
Grandma Shen didn’t give Lin Chengyuan a chance to react either, she snorted coldly and stood in front of the two children.
“Old as I am, my eyes aren’t blind yet. A grown man with a heart smaller than a needle’s eye, always gossiping, what great achievements can he make? And our family’s children are not for you to lecture!”
“Exactly! If you have the guts, wait until my big brother comes back and say it to his face!”
Shen Xing, relying on his brother’s intimidating presence, puffed up with courage.
“No need to wait for big brother, wait until my Sister Jiang Cheng comes out!”
Shen Yue, relying on her sister’s boldness, in her little heart, Jiang Cheng’s status had already surpassed that of her big brother Shen Que, whom she had barely met.
Hearing Shen Xing’s words, Lin Chengyuan remembered Shen Que’s fist the size of a sandbag and his past experiences of being beaten, his muscles twitching with a bit of panic.
The atmosphere was awkwardly silent for a moment.
“What is this comrade talking about? Jiang Cheng wasn’t called to the office for making a mistake, but because she performed exceptionally well!”
Jian Yue’e, who had been befriended by Jiang Cheng during breaks for two days, stepped forward.
“Impossible!”
Lin Chengyuan instinctively retorted.
Jian Yue’e pursed her lips and said, “What’s impossible? You’re really something, you weren’t in class with us, and besides, your wife He Dan knows about it too.”
Jian Yue’e gave He Dan a strange look but didn’t say more, leaving with her little sister.
The people around who had just been envious of He Dan and Lin Chengyuan now looked at them with strange eyes.
“Did you notice, He Dan seems to have something against Jiang Cheng?”
“Right! I noticed it too, always saying things that are neither here nor there.”
“Exactly, and after just a few days of class, the whole school knows her man works at the machinery factory.”
The whispers were soft but audible, and Lin Chengyuan’s face darkened a shade.
He looked at He Dan, who nodded with a bad expression.
Lin Chengyuan still didn’t want to believe it, how could this be?
Feeling he had lost face, he directly shook off He Dan’s hand.
“Why didn’t you tell me earlier!”
“I tried to stop you.”
He Dan lowered her head, somewhat aggrieved.
Lin Chengyuan gritted his teeth, not wanting to cause a scene at the school gate.
“Let’s go home.”
Under the night sky, He Dan jogged to keep up with Lin Chengyuan’s long strides.
Love?
Forget it, it was just like that.
The night school students dispersed in twos and threes, most of them talking about Jiang Cheng’s feat of the day.
Grandma Shen and the others finally felt relieved and continued chatting.
Meanwhile, Jiang Cheng, the center of the topic, stood slightly surprised in front of Teacher Lü.
“You’re saying I should move in with you?”
Teacher Lu hummed, her eyebrows slightly raised.
“What, I’m not charging you, and you’re still unwilling?”
Teacher Lu stared at Jiang Cheng, as if daring her to say no, she would do something about it.
“Teacher Lu, it’s not that I’m unwilling, it’s just that I can’t bear to.”
