1970s Military Marriage: Cannon Fodder Avoids the Plot Through Bullet Screens Chapter 21

Chapter 21

Li Ting hated Lin Shu Yin because she felt threatened by her.

Both in work and in love.

At work, Lin Shu Yin performed better than her, and the captain favored her more. And in love… she always felt that Shen Guan Nan was different towards her.

Even though their interactions in front of her were normal, and they hadn’t even spoken much, she just felt that Shen Guan Nan was different towards Lin Shu Yin.

What was different? His gaze was different. Shen Guan Nan looked at Lin Shu Yin differently. He looked at Lin Shu Yin differently than he looked at her other colleagues. She even wondered if Shen Guan Nan liked Lin Shu Yin.

But it shouldn’t be. He had no reason to like her!

They didn’t know each other well.

“Then I’ll go ask the captain.” Song Wei Wei asked.

Li Ting was a little annoyed. She waved her hand, “Go, go.”

She could accept that Shen Guan Nan didn’t like her, but she couldn’t accept that he liked Lin Shu Yin. Lin Shu Yin was her arch-nemesis.

Song Wei Wei didn’t dare to ask Meng Jia. Instead, she went to find Lin Shu Yin and explained the situation to her.

Lin Shu Yin, “Okay, I don’t mind. Go tell the captain, and then we can switch.”

“Or should we go together?” Song Wei Wei didn’t dare to go alone.

“Okay.”

Lin Shu Yin and Song Wei Wei found Meng Jia. She was checking the program to be performed with the band leader.

Seeing this, Song Wei Wei didn’t dare to say anything. “Shu Yin, maybe we should forget it. The captain seems to have already decided.”

Lin Shu Yin, “We’re already here. Let’s just ask. What’s the big deal? Besides, what’s decided is only for these few days. The following days haven’t been decided yet.”

Lin Shu Yin pulled Song Wei Wei to Meng Jia’s side, “Captain, Wei Wei has something to ask you.”

Meng Jia looked up, “What is it? Are you going to change the song?”

Lin Shu Yin, “No, it’s Wei Wei who wants to talk to you.”

Meng Jia pushed up her glasses, “Wei Wei, what is it?”

With no way out, Song Wei Wei told her about her desire to sing solo, “Captain, I want to try.”

Meng Jia looked at her and thought for a moment. She nodded, “Okay. This is the song that Shu Yin is going to sing. Do you want to switch?” She handed her a sheet of paper.

She supported anyone in her singing team who wanted to sing solo. It was just that for major events, she would let the ones who sang better go on stage.

For example, Lin Shu Yin. For this performance at the company, the solos were all quite difficult songs, and Lin Shu Yin performed them exceptionally well. There was no off-key singing or cracking, she was very stable.

Song Wei Wei took the sheet of paper and looked at it. She cautiously suggested, “Captain, I’m afraid I can’t sing ‘Red Plum Praise’ well. Can I switch to another song?”

Meng Jia, “Okay, you can choose whatever you want. Pick a song that you can sing.”

“Okay, thank you, Captain, for giving me this opportunity.” Song Wei Wei stood at attention and saluted.

Meng Jia smiled, “What’s there to thank me for? Go practice.”

Song Wei Wei was happy, “Okay, Captain.”

“Thank you, Shu Yin.” She thanked Lin Shu Yin again.

Then she took the sheet of paper and ran back.

Meng Jia, “Shu Yin, you go sing a duet with Chen Mei Lian and Xiong Zhi Yuan. I’ll tell you about any solo songs in advance.”

Lin Shu Yin, “Okay, Captain.”

It was 1971, and most of the songs they sang in their art troupe were from the 1960s. They sang the same few songs over and over again.

Chen Mei Lian was surprised, “Why did the captain let you switch with Wei Wei?”

Lin Shu Yin, “Wei Wei wanted to sing solo, so we went and switched the opportunity.”

“That’s okay.” Xiong Zhi Yuan asked.

Who wouldn’t want to sing solo? Chen Mei Lian and Xiong Zhi Yuan also wanted to sing solo, but their singing skills were about the same as Song Wei Wei’s.

The best singers in their singing team were Lin Shu Yin and then Li Ting.

In the past, the solo singing opportunity for major events was given to Li Ting. But since Lin Shu Yin arrived, it had been given to her.

Lin Shu Yin, “Of course it’s okay. Go tell the captain if you want to sing solo. Solo singing isn’t my exclusive right.”

Chen Mei Lian and Xiong Zhi Yuan looked at each other, “Okay.” They went to find Meng Jia.

Two minutes later, they came back. Lin Shu Yin, “What did the captain say?”

Chen Mei Lian smiled, “The captain agreed. But Wei Wei will sing first, and then we’ll take turns.”

Regarding the solo singing opportunity, Meng Jia called everyone to a meeting.

“We’ll be in the countryside for about two months. During these two months, anyone who wants to sing solo, tell me the day before, or I’ll arrange for you all to sing once.”

“Any objections?”

The five members of the singing team shook their heads, “No objections, Captain.”

Meng Jia, “Okay, then the meeting is adjourned.”

The meeting of the singing team had just finished when the band leader, Yu Tie Nan, came over. She asked, “Meng Jia, how is Shu Yin’s horsehead fiddle playing?”

Meng Jia didn’t understand, “She plays pretty well. She knows most of the songs.”

Yu Tie Nan, “She plays pretty well. Ask Shu Yin to come over and play a piece for me to hear.”

Meng Jia, “What, you want Shu Yin to perform a horsehead fiddle piece with Sa Ren and the others?”

Yu Tie Nan, “I have that idea.”

There weren’t many people in their band who could play the horsehead fiddle. Including her, there were only four. One of the team members was on leave because of something at home. That song had to be played by multiple people to sound good.

“Then I’ll go find Shu Yin.” Meng Jia went to call Lin Shu Yin.

“Yu Team wants you. Bring your horsehead fiddle.”

Lin Shu Yin took her horsehead fiddle and came over. Yu Tie Nan asked directly, “Shu Yin, do you know how to play ‘Ten Thousand Horses Galloping’?”

Lin Shu Yin nodded, “I do. I learned it from Sa Ren.”

In her previous life, the first song her relatives and friends asked her to play when she learned the horsehead fiddle was “Ten Thousand Horses Galloping.”

Yu Tie Nan, “Play it for me to hear.”

Meng Jia found a stool for Lin Shu Yin. The band leader came over to check. Lin Shu Yin didn’t hold back. She played with all her might.

As soon as the sound of the horsehead fiddle rang out, the other members of the band gathered around to listen.

Sa Ren whispered, “Shu Yin has a natural talent. How long has she been learning?”

“It’s only been half a year, right?” The other members of the band thought the same thing.

She had only been learning for half a year, and she played so well.

Although Li Ting hated Lin Shu Yin, she had to admit at this moment that Lin Shu Yin was better than her in every way.

It took her several months to barely play one song on the pipa, while Lin Shu Yin already knew how to play several songs.

After the song was finished, Meng Jia and Yu Tie Nan led the applause.

“Shu Yin, why don’t you come to our band? I can definitely teach you more instruments.” Yu Tie Nan’s eyes lit up.

Meng Jia was anxious, “What are you doing, trying to steal my people? Shu Yin is the pillar of our singing team!”

Yu Tie Nan ignored Meng Jia, “Shu Yin, how’s your erhu playing?”

Lin Shu Yin, “It’s okay. I know how to play a few songs.”

Yu Tie Nan, “Do you know ‘Racing Horse’?”

Lin Shu Yin, “I’ve played it.”

Yu Tie Nan called for the band members to get the erhu, “Play it for me to hear.”

Lin Shu Yin played the future world-famous song “Racing Horse” with all her might.
