Su Yu felt relieved when Wang Jinhe agreed, “Xiao He, don’t worry. Their arrival won’t interfere with you; they are just ensuring your safety from the shadows.”
“I know you’re doing this for my good. Have I said anything?” Wang Jinhe grumbled, expressing some unhappiness.
Seeing that Wang Jinhe, despite agreeing, was still a bit upset, Su Yu reached out and patted her head, “Once I catch the mastermind behind this, I’ll have them leave. How about that?”
“Okay.” Wang Jinhe nodded, now satisfied.
She truly didn’t know who was behind this, manipulating their movements, eliminating threats at the opportune moments, surveilling them for so many years—it was really a challenge for these people.
With her eyes lowered, Wang Jinhe played with her fingers, brows furrowed. From the memories of the original owner, she remembered that their family had always lived here, rarely venturing elsewhere. Grandpa and Grandma, as well as her parents, were not the kind to provoke trouble, yet, even so, there were people causing problems for them?
“What’s on your mind, Xiao He?” Su Yu asked, looking at Wang Jinhe.
Wang Jinhe shook her head gently, “Nothing, I just feel these people are incredibly patient. Despite the situation, they still have time to bother us.”
Su Yu remained silent. Indeed, these people waited for over four years before striking again—a display of remarkable patience.
“Don’t worry; I’m here now.”
While everyone contemplated the situation, no one noticed Grandpa Wang’s expression.
The first to notice something amiss with Grandpa Wang was Grandma Wang. She looked at him with concern, and he gently shook his head to reassure her that he was fine.
Even though Grandpa Wang insisted that he was fine, Grandma Wang still felt worried, “Old man, you…”
“I’m fine. I just thought of something from the past. I feel like this won’t happen.” After all, they had been away for so long; those people might not come looking for them.
However, Grandma Wang furrowed her brow, expressing her worries, “Do you really think they will let us go?”
Grandma Wang’s voice wasn’t intentionally lowered, and everyone heard her words.
Wang Jinhe looked at the two elders in surprise and asked, “Grandpa, what are you talking about?”
It seemed there was something between Grandpa and Grandma that they didn’t know about.
Wang Dagui and Gu Shi fell into silence simultaneously.
Observing their reactions, Wang Jinhe glanced between them. None of the four spoke.
Without pressing them for answers, Wang Jinhe waited quietly.
Just when Wang Jinhe thought they wouldn’t speak, Grandpa Wang slowly began, “Xiao He, you should know that our family moved here from another place.”
“I know that, but Grandpa, what do you mean by not letting us go, as Grandma said?”
Yang Zhenwei also looked at Grandpa Wang, who sighed lightly.
He took out a small sachet from around his neck and, opening it, took out a pill and swallowed it.
“Grandpa…” Wang Jinhe looked at him with concern, afraid he had taken something harmful.
However, after Grandpa Wang took the pill, everyone witnessed a transformation in his appearance.
The current Grandpa Wang appeared to be in his early forties, with only faint forehead lines and light wrinkles at the corners of his eyes. He looked like a handsome uncle. Without mentioning it, no one would believe that he had an eighteen-year-old grandson.
“Grandpa, this…” Wang Jinhe looked at Gu Shi and the others beside her, “Mom, you guys too…”
Grandma Wang and the others took out pills and swallowed them.
Seeing the drastic change in their appearances once again, Wang Jinhe began to question the meaning of life.
Were her grandparents just too good-looking? No wonder her brother looked so outstanding. Now, looking at the real faces of Wang Dagui and Gu Shi, she realized that Wang Jingyu had inherited the best traits from both of them.
Swallowing hard, Wang Jinhe was about to say something when she saw Yang Zhenwei looking at Grandpa Wang in shock, “Yu Bailin.”
Hearing this name, which hadn’t been used for over twenty years, Grandpa Wang turned to Yang Zhenwei in surprise, “You know me?”
“The rarely seen young master of the Yu family. It’s hard not to recognize you.” Yang Zhenwei didn’t mince words.
Silently, Yu Bailin looked at Yang Zhenwei and shook his head, “I am no longer Yu Bailin. Now, I am just Old Man Wang.”
Yang Zhenwei stared at Yu Bailin, momentarily at a loss for words.
Wang Jinhe looked at Su Yu in confusion, “Su Yu?”
“It’s okay; I’m just too surprised,” Su Yu replied, snapping out of his astonishment.
Yang Zhenwei never expected that Grandpa Wang would turn out to be Yu Bailin.
Wang Jinhe looked at Su Yu in confusion, “Is my grandfather powerful?”
Su Yu nodded, “More than powerful. In his era, he could be considered a leading figure.”
“Wow, is Grandpa really that amazing? Then why did he come here? And why did he change his appearance and live incognito? Is what Grandma said related to the Yu family?”
Su Yu gently shook his head, “I’m not entirely sure about that.” His gaze shifted to Yu Bailin, curious about why they had left when Yu Bailin was about to become the head of the family.
A person of extraordinary talent, living in such a small mountain village—what were they after?
Seeing everyone looking at him, Yu Bailin couldn’t help but express a hint of helplessness, “Come; let me tell you about what happened back then.”
Once the family was inside, Yu Bailin began recounting the events of more than twenty years ago.
Over two decades ago, when he was about to become the head of the family, his wife and children were suddenly abducted. When he found them and brought them back, he discovered that it was all part of the enemy’s plan and manipulation.
Because of his search for his wife and children, Yu Bailin lost the opportunity to compete for the position of the family head. His opponent, after becoming the head, continuously oppressed him. After his eldest son and daughter-in-law died at the hands of the opponent due to this matter, Yu Bailin had no choice but to leave the Yu family with his wife, son, daughter-in-law, and newborn grandson to protect his younger son.
Wang Jinhe was the child they found on the way.
After arriving here, they sought out the county magistrate, explained their situation, and ultimately used the Disguise Elixir to change their appearances, settling in this small mountain village.
Yu Bailin always knew that the person had not given up on monitoring them. That’s why he didn’t contact his subordinates, nor did he have any intention of leaving. Instead, he chose to live a simple and ordinary life with his family.
After Su Yu told him about Wang Jinhe’s past, he had been thinking whether it was someone from the Yu family who did it.
If it was someone from the Yu family, was it too reckless for them to attempt to take the lives of the entire family using such methods?
