After paying the bill, Jiang Cheng went to the hospital ward to check on Sister Wang and asked if she wanted to call her husband.
The moment Sister Wang saw Jiang Cheng, her face was covered in tears.
“Jiang Cheng, if it weren’t for you—I—I—”
She placed a trembling hand over her stomach, still shaken.
She had been trying to have a child for years. She and her husband had been married for five years, and this was her first pregnancy.
She couldn’t even bear to think about what would have happened if she had fallen straight to the ground today.
“I already call you Sister, so let’s not be so formal. I’ll go inform your family so they can bring you some food and take good care of you. And don’t cry—doctors say it’s bad for the baby.”
At the mention of the baby, Sister Wang immediately wiped her tears away and nodded obediently.
After contacting her family, Jiang Cheng stayed with Sister Wang for a while until her mother-in-law and mother arrived.
The two elderly women thanked Jiang Cheng profusely and even personally walked her out of the hospital. They also reimbursed her for the medical fees she had covered.
Judging from their attire, it was clear that Sister Wang’s family was well-off.
Jiang Cheng had no intention of currying favor with influential people, but having good relationships was always better than having bad ones.
After leaving the hospital, she returned to the recycling station, reported the situation to the director, and continued working until 4:30 PM.
The director felt deeply impressed. Watching Jiang Cheng leave, he sighed in admiration, “Comrade Jiang is truly exceptional.”
Any ordinary person would have taken the rest of the afternoon off.
But she not only returned to report the news but also finished her entire shift.
On the way from the recycling station to night school, Jiang Cheng clearly sensed that someone was following her.
She discreetly retrieved a spoon from her storage space and quickly glanced back at a corner.
A man—not very tall.
She couldn’t make out his face, but his build seemed familiar.
Running through the possibilities in her mind, she was 80% sure it was Dongzi, Sister Kong’s son, from earlier that afternoon.
Was it lust? Revenge? Or some other motive?
Jiang Cheng gripped her self-defense spray tightly, with an electric baton ready in her other hand for immediate action.
She arrived at the night school, yet Dongzi didn’t make a move.
Was he just tailing her?
Jiang Cheng pondered as she entered the building.
She took out the pastries she had prepared earlier and had the school gatekeeper deliver them to Teacher Lü.
When Jiang Cheng wanted to give something, no one could refuse.
She continued her dictionary studies in class, but tonight, she was introduced to a new language.
Teacher Lü took out an English textbook and used the same teaching method.
She read aloud once, and Jiang Cheng repeated it.
When Jiang Cheng fluently spoke the beautifully pronounced English words, Teacher Lü finally let a smile slip.
“Good! Good! Good!”
Three consecutive praises expressed her excitement.
A true linguistic genius—she had really found one.
“Jiang Cheng, there will be people watching you for some time. Don’t worry about it. Just go about your life as usual. These background checks are a basic requirement—do you understand?”
Teacher Lü had already decided to use all her connections to pave the way for Jiang Cheng.
Of course, she wouldn’t tell Jiang Cheng this—she would just act on it.
“I don’t fully understand, but I know you mean well, Teacher.”
Jiang Cheng’s response reassured Teacher Lü.
Yes, she was just a rural child—how could she understand these things?
“Oh, if only I had met you sooner.”
Teacher Lü sighed sincerely.
Jiang Cheng smiled confidently. “No regrets about the past, no fear for the future—the present is the best!”
“You have to believe me. A genius like me is simply different from others!”
Teacher Lü burst into hearty laughter. She was absolutely right.
After class ended, Jiang Cheng went to the other teachers’ offices and found Geography Teacher Li.
“Teacher Li, here are some red dates for you—to help with your circulation. You don’t look very well.”
She placed about ten red dates on his desk.
Then she pulled out a handful of goji berries from her bag.
“Teachers, don’t think I’m playing favorites! You all work hard. I’ll probably be a troublesome student, so I’m giving you these in advance to help smooth things over.”
With that, Jiang Cheng placed the goji berries down and left before the teachers could even react.
None of them knew how to respond.
Because Jiang Cheng clearly wasn’t bribing them.
Who bribes teachers with a few goji berries?
Yes, a few.
A single handful—just enough for each teacher to get six or seven berries at most.
Meanwhile, Geography Teacher Li, who had been troubled since yesterday, stared at the ten or so red dates on his desk.
Tears welled up in his eyes.
“I—I’m not a good teacher!”
The other teachers: What’s going on? Is he grieving over dates now?
Under their questioning, Geography Teacher Li finally confessed.
“You mean to say that Jiang Cheng has memorized the entire textbook?”
“Yes.”
“You’re saying she’s progressing at an unbelievable speed?”
“Yes, and while we’re talking, she’s probably made even more progress.”
“So, if you make a mistake, Jiang Cheng will catch it?”
“Exactly.”
“You’re now reviewing the textbook at home, afraid of making errors? And even more afraid of being unable to answer her questions?”
“Yes!”
As soon as Geography Teacher Li confirmed this, the other teachers froze for ten seconds before scattering in all directions.
Time to study!
Time to prepare lessons!
Time to eat those goji berries!
Meanwhile, Jiang Cheng returned to class and paused at the doorway to watch an amusing scene unfold.
“Hey, He Dan, what’s your problem with Jiang Cheng? Why do you keep picking on her?”
“Yeah! Jiang Cheng never talks behind your back.”
“I think Jiang Cheng is great. Everything you’re saying is just your opinion—it doesn’t mean it’s true.”
Several girls spoke up in defense of Jiang Cheng.
He Dan was completely baffled.
She had always said these things—why had no one objected before?
What was happening today?
It had to be Jiang Cheng’s doing.
“Thank you, everyone! I knew you all had sharp judgment. A progressive and ambitious young person like me is bound to become good friends and comrades with righteous people like you!”
Jiang Cheng dramatically entered the room.
With a whoosh, a group of girls immediately gathered around her.
One after another, they praised her.
The boys in the back, while not usually gossipers, felt like they were missing out on something huge.
The uncertainty was driving them crazy.
Unfortunately, no one filled them in—because the teacher arrived.
The chemistry teacher glanced at Jiang Cheng before beginning the lesson.
Jiang Cheng remained focused, answering questions fluently.
Not only did she keep up with the lesson, but she had also started pre-studying and asking her own questions.
By the end of class, the chemistry teacher had only one thought:
Tonight, I need to prepare my lessons—thoroughly!
During the break, Jiang Cheng stood at the podium, holding a piece of paper.
“I’m going to read a letter of appreciation.”
“We express our gratitude to Comrade Sun Jiandong for his exemplary respect for the elderly and care for the young, escorting the elderly and children home safely… Special thanks from Shen Xing and Shen Yue.”
“Comrade Sun Jiandong, thank you.”
After finishing, Jiang Cheng handed the handwritten letter, copied by Shen Xing, to Sun Jiandong.
Sun Jiandong stared at the letter in disbelief.
He was being thanked?
From childhood, he had always been the troublemaker—the one getting scolded, beaten, and ignored.
Even when competing with Jiang Cheng, he had only wanted to see her lose to boost his own standing—he had never truly considered self-improvement.
“For me?”
“Of course!”
Sun Jiandong sat down, feeling overwhelmed.
Meanwhile, Jiang Cheng returned to her seat and continued being the “troublesome” student.
By the end of the day, she had successfully forced yet another teacher to improve.
That night, many teachers worked late into the night to prepare for their lessons.
An invisible wave of involution has begun to spread among the teachers.
