Chapter 1: Found My Biological Parents?
A bustling café near the university town.
Unlike the upscale cafés in office buildings where a single coffee costs a fortune, this place, catering to students, focused on affordability. As a result, it was packed with university students during lunchtime.
“The situation is like this… So, Miss Su, you are the biological daughter of the Wang family.”
The woman speaking noticed that the person across from her showed no reaction. Thinking it was due to the noisy environment, she repeated herself, this time with a sharper tone, impatience evident in her voice.
Clearly, she didn’t take this matter to heart—she was just here to complete a task.
Su Baili, having caught the impatience in the woman’s tone, finally looked up from her phone. Propping her chin on one hand, she blinked innocently.
“So what?”
The woman was momentarily taken aback by Su Baili’s unexpected reaction. She frowned and pressed on, “We’ve found your biological parents. Don’t you want to meet them?”
Su Baili shook her head. “Not interested~”
That nonchalant response left the woman stunned again.
Holding back her frustration, she continued, “This concerns the future of both families. It’s not something you can simply refuse. I’ll pick you up from school this Saturday. I hope you’ll be prepared, alright?”
“I—”
Before Su Baili could finish her sentence, the woman abruptly stood up, cutting her off.
“That’s settled then, Miss Su. I’ll be leaving now.”
As she walked away, she scoffed inwardly. What was wrong with this Su Baili?
Shouldn’t she be overjoyed after being reunited with her biological parents? Excited, even?
Why did it feel like punching cotton—no resistance, no reaction?
But would she really let herself be outmaneuvered by a mere girl?
She shot a contemptuous glance back at Su Baili. Such a waste of a beautiful face. So what if she was good-looking? She had no intention of going easy on her.
Come Saturday, Su Baili would go—whether willingly or not. And if she refused? Well, that’s what bodyguards were for.
After all, she wasn’t the real daughter of the Lin family. Even if they offended her, what could she do?
If this matter wasn’t handled properly and the Lin family lost face, she’d be out of a job.
She quite liked her current position—prestigious and well-paying. No way was she losing it over some brat.
She hadn’t come alone. A man beside her was organizing documents.
Seeing Assistant Zhao leave, he hastily quickened his movements.
“This is for you—a paternity test confirming your relation to the Wang family. I’ll take the rest of the documents with me for now.”
Su Baili widened her eyes at the file in front of her.
Seriously? They even had a paternity test ready?
Where did they even get her DNA for comparison?
Did Qi Shenzhi know about this?
If someone managed to do this right under his nose, he’d definitely start suspecting people of challenging his authority again.
And people who dared to question him never had a good ending.
Thinking of this, Su Baili couldn’t help but shiver.
Looks like the Lin family is in trouble~
However, to the man across from her, that slight trembling appeared as anxiety and unease.
It made sense—she had just turned twenty, barely an adult, and now she was hit with this kind of news. Even a full-grown adult might struggle to stay calm, let alone a delicate young girl.
She must be completely overwhelmed inside.
He glanced up at the girl before him—her fair skin, delicate features, and clear, innocent eyes. She looked just like a little white rabbit, lively yet fragile. But the slight press of her lips betrayed her, as if she were trying to suppress her panic.
Facing such a beauty, especially one as soft and vulnerable as a little rabbit, the man unconsciously softened his tone.
“Assistant Zhao didn’t mean any harm. She’s just eager to complete the task President Lin assigned her. If you have any questions, you can ask me. Here’s my card.”
With a warm smile, he slid his business card toward Su Baili.
Su Baili returned his smile. “Thank you.”
For a split second, the man was dazed by her smile, and a faint blush crept up his cheeks.
There was no need to check—he was definitely flustered.
His heart stirred slightly because of the girl before him.
But he quickly reminded himself—such a beauty was far beyond his reach. There were plenty of beautiful things in this world, and he was just an ordinary person. He knew his place.
Hurriedly, he grabbed his documents, trying his best to maintain composure as he said, “Miss Su, I have other matters to attend to, so I’ll take my leave. Oh, by the way, I’ve already paid for this table’s meal—please enjoy.”
Then, he all but fled.
Su Baili tilted her head innocently as she watched him go.
Was there some kind of monster here?
Could he eat people or something?
Why did he run so fast?
…Wait, could it be that he noticed Qi Shenzhi was here?!
Wow~
For someone who looked a bit slow, he sure was sharp! He even managed to pick up on that!
Yes, while it seemed like only three people had been present, there were actually four. No—before Assistant Zhao had left, there had been five.
Su Baili lowered her gaze to her phone.
Sure enough, the call was still ongoing, the timer ticking away.
She lifted the phone to her ear, her voice taking on a sweet, playful tone.
“Hello~ Brother, did you hear all that?”
“Hmm, I heard it. Don’t be afraid, baby. Leave this to me.”
A deep voice came through the speaker—just a few words, yet they carried a reassuring weight.
“No way! I still want to see how this plays out,” Su Baili quickly objected.
If Qi Shenzhi really stepped in, there’d be no drama left to watch.
After all, with his level of overprotectiveness, anything that wasn’t supposed to appear in Su Baili’s world would be wiped out before it even had a chance.
If something like this had slipped through his defenses and landed right in front of Su Baili, as long as she wasn’t harmed in any way, things might still be salvageable.
But if she suffered even the slightest discomfort, well—sorry, but the Lin family, and even Su Baili’s biological parents, would be in for a world of trouble.
On the other end of the call, there was a long silence, as if someone were struggling with a difficult decision.
Finally, a low murmur came through.
“I’ll think about it…”
