Like Zhao Chengde, Principal Wang was also left puzzled.
Just moments ago, Jiang Cheng had rushed into his office and, without any formality, called out to him, “Principal, I need a favor!”
“Ah! Coming!”
After responding, Principal Wang couldn’t help but feel a bit of self-disgust.
Had he agreed too quickly?
As a principal, was it appropriate to be so compliant with a student’s request?
Though his mind was filled with these thoughts, his steps didn’t falter as he followed Jiang Cheng to Teacher Lü’s office.
“Where’s Teacher Lü?”
“The teacher had an urgent matter and had to step out, so she told me to study on my own. But Comrade Zhao Chengde has some academic questions, so I came to find you.”
Principal Wang straightened up, running his hand through his thick, vigorous hair, revealing his smooth, full forehead.
“Jiang Cheng, you have a good eye. Back in the day, I was quite the star in Russian…”
“Principal, do I look like someone who would make you work? Just sit here and oversee things for us.”
Jiang Cheng swiftly brought a chair for Principal Wang and even poured him a glass of water with great enthusiasm.
Principal Wang, with an expression that said “you really know how to handle things,” sat down with an air of importance, holding his teacup.
Jiang Cheng, sitting on her chair, turned to Zhao Chengde and said, “Take out the article.”
Zhao Chengde, who had been passive throughout, took out a notebook from his bag, which Jiang Cheng promptly took.
“The handwriting is neat… but this part isn’t quite right. Look, if you translate it this way, it would be better… Right now, you’re translating with a Chinese mindset.”
“Don’t you think this translation would be better?”
Jiang Cheng didn’t waste any words, diving straight into the substance without holding back.
At first, Zhao Chengde thought Jiang Cheng was overestimating herself, but after listening for a while, he subconsciously pulled over a chair and listened more intently.
He even began to feel that Jiang Cheng might be explaining things better than Teacher Lü.
Meanwhile, Principal Wang, holding his teacup, finally realized that the whole “overseeing” thing was nonsense!
He was just there to be a breathing prop!
Principal Wang was initially annoyed but couldn’t help but chuckle.
This Jiang Cheng… she’s quite the little trickster.
But, to be fair, she did the right thing.
If it were just her and Zhao Chengde alone in the office, a boy and a girl, it would indeed be inappropriate.
Sometimes, actions that seem unnecessary can save you a lot of trouble.
Jiang Cheng continued explaining, radiating the aura of a teacher.
Zhao Chengde, no longer just passively listening, asked his first question. After receiving a detailed answer from Jiang Cheng, he asked a second, then a third.
“Sip—tsk tsk—”
Principal Wang, who had just taken a sip of water, was now being stared at by both Jiang Cheng and Zhao Chengde.
Seeing their serious faces, he guiltily turned his head, a small trickle of water flowing back down the corner of his mouth.
After finishing his sip, Principal Wang came back to his senses.
What was he doing?
Why was he feeling guilty?
Who was the principal here, him or them?
But when he saw the two brightest students diligently studying and improving, Principal Wang felt that his earlier reaction might have been a bit over the top.
As time went on, Principal Wang not only felt his legs going numb but also noticed that his pants were damp with sweat, feeling uncomfortably sticky.
Finally, when it was time to wrap up, Zhao Chengde packed his books and stood up, once again feeling defeated.
“Comrade Jiang Cheng, I’m not as smart as you, nor do I have your vision and broad-mindedness. I admit defeat.”
Jiang Cheng was also tidying up her books. Hearing Zhao Chengde’s words, this time she didn’t brush him off with empty words.
“Comrade Zhao Chengde, the world of translation is vast. With so many countries, it’s never about just one person.”
“True heroes are never alone; they are part of a group.”
“I hope both of us can strive to be part of that group.”
Jiang Cheng nodded at Zhao Chengde, then thanked Principal Wang before hurriedly leaving the office to solidify her future connections.
Inside the office, Principal Wang stood up and patted Zhao Chengde on the shoulder.
“What I’m about to say might make you uncomfortable, but I still want to tell you that meeting Jiang Cheng might be the luckiest thing to happen to you in this lifetime.”
“Chengde, only by following the right guide can your intelligence and talents be fully utilized.”
Principal Wang walked out of the office, leaning against the wall as he discreetly tried to adjust his sticky pants.
But of course, there’s always someone who doesn’t know when to keep quiet.
“Principal, why are your pants wet?”
Math Teacher Yu immediately regretted his words, awkwardly locking eyes with Principal Wang.
“Uh—I still have homework to finish!”
Principal Wang: You’re a teacher! What homework do you have?!
Teacher Yu ran off, slapping his own mouth a couple of times as he went.
At that moment, he really wished he could borrow Jiang Cheng’s way with words.
Jiang Cheng attended one of the two night classes.
During the second class, she was called away by Teacher Lü.
When Jiang Cheng went to ask for leave, she vaguely noticed the biology teacher for the next class smiling.
He seemed quite happy.
Did he not want her in class?
Biology Teacher: Yes! I’m afraid you’ll raise your head!
Jiang Cheng followed Teacher Lü to the principal’s office, where two unfamiliar faces awaited.
One was older, probably around the same age as Teacher Lü, about sixty.
The other was younger, around forty, with a strong build. Though his aura was restrained, his eyes were intimidating.
“You must be Jiang Cheng. Teacher Lü tells me you’re a linguistic genius. Would you mind taking a test on the spot?”
“Teacher Lü always tells the truth.”
Jiang Cheng clearly saw the man pause for half a second. She took the initiative and said, “I’m ready to start anytime.”
Jiang Cheng knew they were suspicious about her proficiency in R-language.
Her cooperation pleased them, and the test began.
The older man spoke in four different languages, each time progressing from sentences to paragraphs to dialogues.
After hearing each one just once, Jiang Cheng flawlessly repeated them back.
The two men exchanged subtle glances, and then the older man spoke again, this time in a dialect.
Jiang Cheng repeated it perfectly once more.
After the dialect test, the older man suggested a conversation in Russian, which Jiang Cheng readily agreed to.
They went back and forth, chatting amiably. The older man smiled kindly, discussing simple, everyday topics, easily lowering one’s guard.
Just when the atmosphere was at its best, the older man suddenly threw in a sentence in R-language.
“What?”
Jiang Cheng instinctively responded in Chinese, her stunned and bewildered expression clearly reflected in everyone’s eyes.
“Excellent! A genius! Truly remarkable!”
The older man, no longer the affable figure from before, stood up in excitement, his eyes shining as he looked at Jiang Cheng.
Teacher Lü immediately stepped in front of Jiang Cheng, protective like a mother hen. “She’s my student!”
The older man pretended to be stern.
“Teacher Lü, that’s not fair. You only specialize in Russian. A genius like Jiang Cheng shouldn’t be limited to just one language.”
After saying this, the old man turned to Jiang Cheng with a boastful look. “Jiang Cheng, I’m proficient in R-language and English. Would you like to learn?”
Jiang Cheng understood that she had passed the old man’s test.
“Thank you, but as a genius, I can manage to learn on my own.”
With that one sentence, Teacher Lü felt uplifted, vindicated, and stood a little taller.
The old man’s expression turned odd. Did this girl just compliment herself again?
The middle-aged man, seeing this, quickly interjected, “Old Xu, we still have business to discuss!”
