Chapter 49: No Need for Another Man’s Attention
Jiang Yaoyao felt like she had become Tang Seng, captured by demons in the Spider Cave.
The only difference was—
The demons in the cave wanted Tang Seng himself, while the socialites surrounding her were all subtly talking about Pei Heng.
They wore polite smiles and spoke with enough courtesy, but their long-standing habits of looking down on others and their high-and-mighty attitudes inevitably slipped through in their words and gestures.
And when they learned from others that Jiang Yaoyao was just an unknown little actress, they quickly made their judgments.
Their attitude toward her carried an unmistakable sense of condescension.
How could the head of the Pei family possibly marry a minor celebrity?
She was merely a little pet by his side.
But that was fine, too.
After all, for so many years, Pei Heng had never been seen with any women, leading to all sorts of speculation.
Now, with Jiang Yaoyao around, at least it proved his orientation and taste were normal.
So, under a guise of friendliness, these ladies pretended to befriend this insignificant actress—while actually trying to get closer to Pei Heng and position themselves as the future Mrs. Pei.
Yet, standing in the middle of them, Jiang Yaoyao unconsciously furrowed her delicate brows.
She couldn’t quite put her finger on it, but with every “Mr. Pei” they uttered, an inexplicable irritation began to rise in her heart.
Was it their overly fervent gazes when they mentioned Pei Heng? Or was it the barely concealed desire in their words?
Her mind was a tangled mess. Jiang Yaoyao shifted her gaze slightly, and the assistant who had been keeping a polite distance instantly understood her meaning.
With steady strides, he walked over.
Even in a room full of people with higher status than him, he remained composed and professional, like a disciplined little robot.
“Miss Jiang, sir is calling for you.”
Since Pei Heng had summoned her, these women naturally wouldn’t dare to hold her back any longer.
Though reluctant, they had no choice but to let her go, still putting on a false display of warmth, inviting her to Paris next month to watch a fashion show together.
Jiang Yaoyao simply nodded perfunctorily.
Following the strict little robot of an assistant, she left the perfumed circle of socialites.
They found a less crowded spot, but before she could even steady herself, a tall figure blocked her path.
Jiang Yaoyao looked up.
Wei Changze, rarely seen in a suit, stood before her. His eyes gleamed with a ripple of emotions as he smiled.
“Yaoyao.”
Perhaps it was because of the terrible first impression he had left on her when she first entered this world, but even after all this time, despite working in the same production crew, Jiang Yaoyao had never given him a pleasant look.
She simply nodded and immediately tried to walk away.
Unexpectedly, Wei Changze sidestepped, blocking her path once more.
“Yaoyao, have you seen what’s being said about us online?”
Jiang Yaoyao stopped in her tracks.
She lifted her dewy eyes and looked at him.
Wei Changze curved his lips into a small smile. “Yaoyao, don’t worry, I don’t mean anything by it.”
“I just think this is a great opportunity. We’re filming in the same crew right now. If we occasionally let a few ambiguous photos slip out, your popularity will rise, more people will notice you, and you’ll gain access to better resources.”
The little beauty with her long lashes studied him carefully.
Jiang Yaoyao had no interest in creating gossip.
But she hadn’t expected Wei Changze to suggest this himself.
After all, he had a massive fanbase of devoted female followers. If rumors of a romantic relationship spread, he would undoubtedly lose a lot of them, which wouldn’t be beneficial to his career at all.
Seeing her remain silent, Wei Changze bent down slightly, his eyes still smiling, though his smile carried a hint of bitterness.
“I know I was wrong in the past, and that’s why you despise me. I’ll never make the same mistake again.”
“Yaoyao, this is my way of making it up to you.”
“So if you want, you can step on me to rise.”
“Even if, in the end, you smear my name when we ‘break up,’ I won’t mind.”
“Yaoyao, I’m willing.”
The delicate beauty with snow-white skin and crimson lips blinked slowly, her dewy almond-shaped eyes shimmering with a watery glow. When she gazed at someone, it felt as if countless stars had fallen into them—
Brilliant and dazzling, enough to make one lose themselves.
At this moment, those soft, captivating eyes looked straight at him, carrying a hint of shock—like a startled fish beneath a rippling lake, flicking its tail as it darted away.
“Wei Changze, I don’t—”
“She doesn’t need it.”
A second later, a man’s icy voice rang out.
Rushed footsteps approached, and a tall figure stepped in front of Jiang Yaoyao.
Pei Heng’s handsome face was cold and unreadable, his sharp features exuding an air of detachment. His gaze seemed laced with frost and snow.
Wei Changze’s lips pressed into a tight line.
The atmosphere instantly grew unbearably tense.
In front of the onlookers, it was Wei Changze who took a step back first, lowering his gaze as he called out, “Uncle.”
Standing nearby, Sheng Yujing crossed his arms, his gaze sweeping over Wei Changze with a look of appraisal.
Gu Jinling stepped between them, attempting to mediate,
“Alright, alright, whatever needs to be said can wait.”
“Xiao Ze, what are you doing here?”
Wei Changze’s father quickly approached, grabbing his son by the arm and offering Pei Heng a slight nod,
“Mr. Pei, I have some matters to discuss with Xiao Ze. Please excuse us.”
With that, he swiftly pulled Wei Changze away.
On the sidelines, Yan Leyao, who had been watching everything unfold, stomped her foot in frustration before hurrying off as well.
Since tension had arisen on this side of the gathering, others—eager to avoid any trouble—began subtly shifting away.
Before long, a large open space had cleared around them.
Sheng Yujing glanced at Jiang Yaoyao, then at Pei Heng, before letting out a small chuckle.
Unlike Pei Heng’s cold and distant tone, his voice always carried a playful lilt, like a carefree young master who never took anything too seriously.
“That little bastard really is something.”
“He calls you Uncle, so does that mean he should call our little sister-in-law ‘Auntie’? What, does he want something to happen between him and his ‘Auntie’?”
The room was kept at a low temperature.
Pei Heng lifted a hand, and a waiter immediately brought over a delicate women’s shawl. Taking it himself, Pei Heng carefully draped it over Jiang Yaoyao’s shoulders.
His eyes were slightly downcast, and his voice carried a lazy indifference,
“Yaoyao and I… aren’t in the kind of relationship you’re thinking of.”
A quiet laugh sounded from behind him.
Sheng Yujing shook his head.
From his perspective, the man who had always been distant and indifferent to women was now gently brushing his fingers against the soft skin of the little beauty’s exposed hand. His usually low and cold voice was filled with an unmistakable warmth.
“Are you feeling better now? Still cold?”
The delicate beauty obediently shook her head, softly murmuring her thanks.
Pei Heng’s deep, narrow phoenix eyes curved slightly, his voice lowered into an intoxicating whisper,
“Yaoyao, whatever you want, you can tell me.”
He gently stroked the silky strands of her hair,
“No matter what wish it is, even if you want the stars in the sky, I will pluck them down and place them in your hands.”
“You don’t need another man’s attention. Let me handle everything for you, alright?”
