The first chapter of “The Legend of the Divine Eye” concluded amidst Li Lei’s shock and confusion.
Fu Wenyu believed that when readers reached this point, they would undoubtedly be very curious. Firstly, they would be curious about the opportunity Li Lei had obtained, and secondly, they would be curious about what he ultimately saw.
What could it be?
What exactly Li Lei saw, Fu Wenyu did not reveal in the first chapter of “The Legend of the Divine Eye,” because as he wrote, he realized that the knowledge in his memory did not quite match reality. For example, in his memory, ‘gambling on stones’ referred to jadeite, but in reality, jadeite became popular only during the Qing Dynasty.
In earlier times, people preferred other types of jade, such as Hetian jade, Dushan jade, Xiuyan jade, and turquoise. The famous ‘He Shi Bi’ was said to be a piece of Dushan jade.
However, Fu Wenyu, whether in his past life or present life, knew little about jade, which was a luxury for the wealthy. To be safe, he decided to seek advice from someone knowledgeable.
The choice was easy: Shopkeeper Zhang.
He planned to take the first chapter to him for review and also ask if he knew any jade or antique dealers. The ‘X-ray vision’ ability in gambling stone novels could be adapted for antique appraisal. This way, Li Lei could not only see through jade but also antiques.
This would make the story more interesting.
Shopkeeper Zhang was surprised to see him return with a new manuscript so soon, “So quickly?”
Fu Wenyu replied, “I’ve been thinking about this story for a long time, so I wrote it quickly. Uncle Zhang, please see if it’s usable. If it is, I’d like to ask for your help.”
Shopkeeper Zhang took the manuscript.
As he read, he murmured to himself.
“…Opportunity.”
After finishing the last page, he eagerly asked, “What opportunity did the old beggar give Li Lei? That glowing thing? What exactly was it? What could it do?”
Clearly, he was also intrigued by Fu Wenyu’s deliberate cliffhanger.
Since Shopkeeper Zhang was not just a reader but also an editor, Fu Wenyu did not hide the truth, “Actually, the opportunity the old beggar gave was a pair of eyes.”
“Li Lei’s eyes can see a layer of light on treasures,” Fu Wenyu explained briefly, “After all, treasures may be dusty, but they still emit a faint glow.”
“Such a strange thing?”
Shopkeeper Zhang was astonished and flipped back through the manuscript.
“Hmm, ‘a faint glow,’ Li Lei indeed saw a layer of light. Wenyu, how did you come up with such an idea? Could there really be such extraordinary people in the world?”
Fu Wenyu shook his head, “Of course not.”
He did not believe such extraordinary people existed. Even if they did, it would likely be due to eye mutations or bacterial infections, and they would see everything with a fluorescent glow, not just treasures. The ability described in his story was merely a literary device, not to be taken seriously.
“…What a pity.”
Shopkeeper Zhang lamented.
Clearly, he was fascinated by this magical ability.
Fascination was good; fascination would turn him into a reader of this story. Fu Wenyu was pleased and asked, “Uncle Zhang, do you know anyone knowledgeable about jade or antiques?”
“I have some questions I’d like to ask.”
“Jade or antiques…”
Shopkeeper Zhang thought for a moment and said, “The boss owns a silver shop and an antique shop. The jewelry store is called ‘Treasure Tower,’ and the antique shop is called ‘Jinshizhai.’ The shopkeeper or master craftsmen there should be quite knowledgeable. If you want to consult them, they would be suitable.”
Unexpectedly, Mr. Tang happened to own shops selling jade and antiques. Fu Wenyu was delighted, “That’s great! Uncle Zhang, please help me ask. I’m willing to mention their shop names in the story, letting readers know that their goods are genuine and fairly priced.”
This would also help repay some of Mr. Tang’s kindness, as a popular story could boost sales, attracting interested readers to visit the shops.
At this point, Fu Wenyu cautiously whispered, “By the way, are the jade and antiques in those shops truly genuine and fairly priced?”
Please don’t sell fakes!
Otherwise, readers who bought fakes might come after him.
Shopkeeper Zhang laughed, “Don’t worry, our boss doesn’t deceive people. Since the old boss’s time, if anyone bought a fake from their shop, the shop would compensate double.”
That was reassuring. Fu Wenyu felt at ease.
A shop daring to make such a promise would certainly not intentionally sell fakes.
Without delay, he asked Shopkeeper Zhang to inquire in the next few days if anyone was willing to help. If they were, he could use the five-day update cycle of the Liuzhou Tabloid to catch up on relevant knowledge, avoiding delays in updates. If not, he would have time to find someone else.
Though it would be less convenient.
This matter seemed too trivial to Fu Wenyu, so he approached Shopkeeper Zhang directly instead of going to the Tang family. However, Mr. Tang still found out through the antique shop shopkeeper and the silver shop shopkeeper.
“You’re saying Fu Wenyu wants to mention Jinshizhai in his story?”
“Yes, boss.”
Shopkeeper Fang of Jinshizhai was a white-haired man in his sixties. Perhaps due to a lifetime dealing with antiques, he was calm and spoke slowly.
“He was introduced by Shopkeeper Zhang.”
“Shopkeeper Zhang said that Mr. Fu promised to mention Jinshizhai in his story if we were willing to teach him some insider knowledge about jade and antiques. This would let everyone know that our goods are genuine and fairly priced, like an ‘advertisement’ in the Tabloid.”
Although Shopkeeper Fang had not read many stories, he had heard about the child-swapping incident at the Tang family, initially sparked by a story.
So when Shopkeeper Zhang relayed the message, he hesitated.
Originally, he planned to ignore it, as Mr. Fu wanted to know their trade secrets, which were passed down to descendants and carefully guarded, not easily shared.
But Mr. Fu was special.
“Hmm…”
Mr. Tang pondered and asked, “What kind of story does he want to write?”
Honestly, Mr. Tang had not been fond of stories before; they were trivial to him. But during the child-swapping incident, he read Fu Wenyu’s “The True and False Young Master.” Now, hearing about a new story involving antiques and jade, he grew curious.
Shopkeeper Fang happened to have the manuscript with him and handed it over.
“This is Shopkeeper Zhang’s copy.”
He said with a peculiar expression, “Boss, this story is quite unusual.”
“Mr. Fu wrote about a celestial being who, disguised as a beggar, gave a child an opportunity. With this opportunity, the child could see through antiques. Genuine antiques had a faint glow, while fakes did not. Such an opportunity surpassed even the most skilled appraisers.”
“Very unusual.”
“A celestial being’s opportunity?” Mr. Tang curiously took the manuscript and read it carefully.
As he read, he was astonished, “This, this, could this be ‘enlightenment’?”
Mr. Tang’s hands trembled as he held the paper, murmuring, “With a tap on the head by the immortal, the child surnamed Li gained eyes that could see through treasures. How unusual, truly unusual!”
“If such extraordinary people really existed…”
Before he could finish, Mr. Tang realized, “Haha, such people couldn’t possibly exist, or else where would we stand?”
If they did, he would have heard of them.
Even the most experienced appraisers sometimes made mistakes.
“This Fu Wenyu is extraordinary.”
Mr. Tang reluctantly put down the manuscript, smiling, “I really want to know what happens after Li Lei gains this opportunity. It must be fascinating.”
“Well, I think we should agree.”
“Also, Jinshizhai should stock more antiques. While there are no people who can see through antiques, there is a talented writer. Once this story is published, Jinshizhai will likely see a surge in customers.” This was his experience from advertising his restaurant in the Liuzhou Tabloid.
Shopkeeper Fang hesitated, “But what if…”
“No customers? Doesn’t matter,” Mr. Tang said generously, “The antique trade isn’t a popular business. If things don’t sell, we can reduce acquisitions in the coming months.”
“As long as we don’t misjudge, we won’t lose.”
Shopkeeper Fang nodded in agreement.
After Shopkeeper Fang left, Mr. Tang read the first chapter of “The Legend of the Divine Eye” again. Finally, he decided to take the manuscript to the backyard.
As he entered, he heard his wife’s voice.
“…Yishan, would you like some more?”
“This chicken soup is delicious, the stew is good too, and this fish stew, you had a bowl of rice with it yesterday. The doctor said you need to eat and sleep well to recover. Would you like some more?”
“Or if you want something else, I’ll have it made.”
After these words, there was no response from inside.
After a while, Mrs. Tang’s anxious voice came again, “Yishan, where are you going? Your father will be back soon. Walk slowly, don’t fall, Yishan…”
Mr. Tang’s expression turned serious, and he quickly walked in, just as the thin child ran out.
“Yishan, Dad’s back.”
He crouched down, picked up his son who looked delighted to see him, patted his back, and said softly, “Yishan is so good, you’ve finished your meal, right? Dad brought you a gift.”
Mr. Tang stepped inside, nodding to the anxious Mrs. Tang to reassure her. He shook the papers in his hand and said in a coaxing tone, “This story is about an immortal who descended to the mortal world…”
