Chapter 100 A Change of Attitude
The noodles were made by Shen Dahe early that morning before he left. They were very chewy. Knowing they had children, he asked Wang Xiulan to make a pot of dumpling soup. The dumplings were small and didn’t contain anything other than minced meat and greens. Besides the staple food, they also cooked two dishes: braised fish and stir-fried lotus root slices.
Knowing what her sister-in-law was like, Shen Zhiyu wanted to have a comfortable New Year at home. So, the first thing she did when she got home was to put the things they brought back on the table and ask Wang Xiulan to put them away.
Wang Xiulan couldn’t close her mouth from smiling when she saw so many things. Although they weren’t valuable, it was good that they brought something!
“You came back from so far away and still brought things.” Wang Xiulan said, while she and Tiedan and Goudan went to put things away. Chen Cuijuan saw her daughter-in-law like this and wanted to give her a hard time.
“You’re eating. What are you putting away?” Wang Xiulan had been in charge of the cupboard keys while her mother-in-law was away. She had almost started to think of herself as the mistress of the house. Now, hearing her mother-in-law’s words, she shrank her neck in fear. “Okay.” She pulled her two sons to the dinner table. “Sit down.”
Wang Xiulan had always thought that her Goudan and Tiedan were the most handsome and promising sons in the entire area. But today, when she compared her two sons to Shen Zhiyu and Gu Ye’s two fair-skinned sons, she felt that the black snot marks under her sons’ noses were particularly eye-catching. But Goudan and Tiedan didn’t seem to mind. They were very curious seeing their twin cousins for the first time and kept staring at Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan.
Tuan Tuan was held by his grandpa, and Yuan Yuan was held by Gu Ye. They were feeding them dumpling soup in small bites. This was the first time the little guys had eaten dumpling soup. They were completely enthralled by the taste, and their eyes were full of admiration for their grandpa. Shen Dahe chuckled. “They really know how to eat.”
When they saw their grandpa eating fish, they were also very tempted, but the fish had a strong flavor and they didn’t dare to eat it. There were also a lot of bones. Shen Dahe was very indulgent with children.
When he heard that the two little guys loved fish, he immediately said they were exactly like their mother when she was little. He said he would kill a grass carp tomorrow, crush it up, and add eggs and flour to make fish cakes for them.
While they were eating, Shen Dahe also asked Gu Ye and Shen Zhiyu about their situation in the army over the past two years. When they heard Gu Ye talk about his training, Shen Dahe, Shen Guoqiang, and Shen Guowang listened intently, frowning.
Every man has a dream of being a soldier. Just listening to the descriptions of his training, Shen Dahe, Shen Guoqiang, and Shen Guowang couldn’t get enough. Chen Cuijuan looked at the three men, who were so naive, and said casually, but with a hint of pride, “Well, we live at home, and we can hear the bugle every morning and evening.
Sometimes, we can even hear them shouting slogans during training.” Now, the three Shen men looked at Chen Cuijuan differently. Oh my, they could even hear the bugle at home. That’s amazing! Feeling the admiration in her husband and son’s eyes, Chen Cuijuan said smugly, “We hear it every day. What’s the big deal? Look at you two, you’re so clueless.”
As soon as Chen Cuijuan opened her mouth, the conversation was all hers. She talked about how she had eaten with the Chief’s wife, how she had caught a human trafficker on the train, and how she had ridden in a sleeper berth. What was a sleeper berth? “It’s a train, but it’s different from a hard seat. There are beds in the carriage.
We slept on the way back. It was so comfortable!
” Oh my, there were beds on trains? Besides Shen Dahe, who occasionally went to the county, Wang Xiulan and the others had never even been to the county. A tractor was considered a very impressive vehicle to them. Let alone a train, and a train with beds!
By the end, Shen Dahe couldn’t take it anymore. “The noodles are going to get soggy.” Chen Cuijuan quickly mixed the noodles. “Well, you have to go out to realize that our commune is really just a small place. But there are advantages to being small.
It’s so good!” After listening, Shen Dahe was even more determined to do a good job. Maybe he could even become a cadre in the county. He had only gone to the county to realize that a production team captain was nothing. But first, he had to do a good job with his current work!
Shen Zhiyu felt that the food at home was much tastier than outside, probably because of the love involved. She usually didn’t eat much at night, but today she finished a whole bowl of noodles. Seeing that they liked to eat fish, Shen Dahe said, “I’ll get you some more fish when you go back. You can eat it there.” “I’ll make more fish cakes tomorrow too.
They’ll last a long time in the cold weather. We can make two meals for Tuan Tuan and Yuan Yuan when we get there.” The little guys were happily eating their fragrant dumpling soup. When they heard their grandpa calling them, they looked up at him and blinked their eyes, as if they were asking him what he wanted. Shen Dahe chuckled.
“They’re so smart! They’re exactly like their mother when she was little.” Shen Zhiyu’s room had been kept as it was. It was the same when she left and when she came back. Wang Xiulan had said that the room was empty anyway, so she could put some things there. As soon as she opened her mouth, Shen Dahe scolded her. There were places to put things in the house. Why would she put them in her daughter’s room? What if her daughter came back and saw that her room had been turned into a storage room? How would she feel?
Shen Zhiyu didn’t know about this, but when she went back to her room after dinner, she saw that everything was still the same as when she left. Her heart felt warm. Wang Xiulan saw her younger sister-in-law’s expression and breathed a sigh of relief.
It was a good thing that her father-in-law had scolded her back to her senses.
“Yuzo, here are two thick quilts. We also put extra layers of mattress pads on the bed. It’s definitely warm.” “We didn’t get you a brazier because you have children. You should take your shoes and clothes outside to dry. They’ll be dry by tomorrow morning.
But I filled the thermos with hot water. If you’re cold at night, just call me. I’ll bring a brazier in for you. Just leave the door slightly ajar.” Wang Xiulan’s attitude was good, and Shen Zhiyu was a little surprised. “Okay, sister-in-law. We don’t need a brazier.
Gu Ye and the children are like furnaces. I’m afraid of the heat.” Wang Xiulan: “That’s good. The water is already boiled. Yuzo, do you want to take a bath now or later?”
Shen Zhiyu went back to her room to rest for a while. Gu Ye was still outside, chatting with Shen Dahe and the others by the fire. They say three women make a play; men also have endless things to talk about when they’re together. Shen Zhiyu had just said that she was afraid of the cold and that Gu Ye always got into bed first to warm up the blankets before she got in.
As soon as she finished speaking, Gu Ye and Shen Dahe walked in together, carrying the children. The two little ones were tired too. They had been by the fire with their grandpa for a while and had fallen asleep. He put the children in bed. “
Just take a quick wash tonight. Wash in the room. I’ll go get some water.”
“Okay.” There was no bathroom at home, so she just washed her face in the room, wiped her body, soaked her feet, and got into bed. The quilts and mattress pads were sun-dried, fluffy, and warm. As soon as she got into bed, the man pulled her into his arms, and he put his legs around her feet. “Cold?” Shen Zhiyu smiled. “Not cold.
What were you talking about with Dad outside? You talked for so long.”
