Chapter 11: The Real Daughter Appears
Su Baili wasn’t about to go easy on him. She stared directly into Mr. Lin’s eyes and said, “Oh? Uncle, I have a question. How did your wife end up giving birth at that hospital? That doesn’t seem right, does it?”
Pfft, little Green Tea, still trying to play the moral high ground to manipulate her?
Dream on!
Over the years, Su Baili had been spoiled by Qi Shenzhi to the point where she was unstoppable. There was no way she was going to let herself be at a disadvantage.
Even if she couldn’t expose the truth right now, she sure as hell wasn’t going to let him have an easy time.
What was this? First that condescending attitude, then disrespecting the Wang family, and now trying to talk to her in a gentle, coaxing tone?
Where’s your face??
Their daughter was raised with so much effort by the Wang family, while she was lost by them. Now she even started to question whether it was really an accident that she was lost in the first place.
If she hadn’t met her brother, then her life—ha…
And still, no sense of guilt?
This is the attitude they have toward the Wang family?
How big must their faces be?
Mr. Lin, caught under Su Baili’s dark, piercing gaze, felt an unexpected pressure from her—something that felt like the authority of someone on a higher level.
What a joke. A girl?
How could she possibly have that kind of aura? It must be a mistake on his part.
But Su Baili’s question hit home, and it made him feel uneasy. He forced a smile and chuckled, “It was just a coincidence, a total coincidence. At that time, I was dealing with a difficult issue at the factory and hadn’t been home for a long time. My wife was worried, so she came to check on me. But on the way, she got into an accident and went into premature labor. In her panic, we ended up at whichever hospital the ambulance took us to.”
Su Baili nodded. Although she still found this story full of holes, she couldn’t prove anything just yet. Without evidence, she couldn’t just accuse them—otherwise, she’d be unfairly slandering them.
Mrs. Lin smiled and quickly added, “Baili, you’re such a sensible child. I’m sure you can understand the hardships your biological parents have gone through. Please, go sit with them so they can see you.”
Su Baili turned her head and saw the Wang couple, their eyes filled with tears, struggling not to let them fall. The moment Su Baili glanced back at them, they forced smiles on their weary faces.
Mother Zhao immediately waved her hands in reassurance, “It’s okay, it’s okay. Take your time. We won’t rush you to accept us. After all, we’ve never raised you, so we don’t have the right to dictate your life. Just know, whenever you need anything, you can come to us. We’ll always be here for you.”
“Yes, yes,” Father Wang nodded, his voice choked with emotion. But at that moment, a tear finally escaped and rolled down his cheek. Trying not to make Su Baili uncomfortable, he hastily wiped it away with his sleeve.
Su Baili’s mouth opened and closed, and in the end, she only managed to say, “Uncle, Aunt.”
The Wang couple, undeterred, repeatedly said, “Good, good, good child.”
Mr. and Mrs. Lin exchanged a glance, their eyes full of urgency. They couldn’t afford to let this drag on; their daughter would be back soon, and how would they explain themselves then?
Just as they were thinking of how to proceed, the door of the Lin house opened again, and a young girl’s figure appeared. She excitedly called out while carrying a paper bag, “Dad, Mom, I’m home~”
The Wang couple immediately reacted to the familiar voice. Just as they were about to speak, they heard Mr. and Mrs. Lin cheerfully reply, “Qiyan’s back!”
The joy in their voices was genuine, a stark contrast to their dismissive tone from earlier when facing Su Baili and the Wang family. It was like two completely different people.
“Yes, I was just…”
There was some distance from the front door to the living room, and as Lin Qiyan walked in, she finally saw who was sitting on the sofa. She abruptly stopped mid-sentence.
Lin Qiyan blinked for a moment, then asked, “Why are you here?”
Hearing this, the Wang couple couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness. So, the “Dad” and “Mom” weren’t meant for them…
It hadn’t even been a few days, and their daughter, whom they had raised, had already become someone else’s daughter, and was adjusting to it as if nothing had changed, as if the past twenty years of family bonds meant nothing at all.
As Wang Father thought back on the years of raising their daughter, he couldn’t help but sigh. Could it be that they didn’t teach her well enough, leading her to become this cold and indifferent person?
Mrs. Lin pulled Lin Qiyan over and gave her a playful but reproachful look, “How can you talk like that?”
Lin Qiyan came to her senses and laughed, placing the gift bag onto the sofa, “Oh, you guys misunderstood. It’s just that I was a bit shocked. I wasn’t expecting Uncle and Aunt to come today, and no one told me in advance.”
Her words, however, were worse than not saying anything at all. The words “Uncle and Aunt” struck straight at the heart of the Wang couple.
For a moment, they felt like they had been plunged into an icy cave, and their hearts slowly grew cold.
Mr. Lin, picking up on the moment, chimed in, “Aha, you’re too formal! Why should Uncle and Aunt have to notify you in advance? You can’t be so willful from now on, understand?”
His words completely severed any ties between Lin Qiyan and the Wang family.
“Got it,” Lin Qiyan pouted playfully, “I won’t ask questions that aren’t mine to ask from now on, is that okay?”
“That’s how it should be. You need to start getting used to it,” Mr. Lin smiled, then added, “Your Uncle Wang and Aunt Zhao have found their real daughter. You need to know what’s what. Otherwise, what would their daughter think?”
His tone implied that it was somehow Su Baili’s fault, further complicating the situation.
Even the usually humble Wang Father picked up on the subtle insinuation. He frowned and said, “Mr. Lin, your words are a bit off. This isn’t Baili’s fault. She just met us today. To bring her into this discussion is a bit much. But, as for Qiyan, I didn’t expect her to change her tune so quickly. How come no one mentioned such an important matter to us beforehand?”
Although Wang Father was somewhat timid because of his disability, he didn’t back down when it came to defending his child’s reputation.
If this continued, who knew how things would get twisted and turned into something where Su Baili was blamed for being petty.
It was clear that ever since Lin Qiyan had learned about her biological parents, she hadn’t cared about the Wang couple anymore.
Thinking about this again left them feeling even colder inside.
