Chapter 13: Auntie, Your Thoughts Are Not Right, You Need to Change Them
The saleswoman, impatient, put down her book and melon seeds, raised her eyes to scan the three of them, and clicked her tongue lightly.
“You’re talking too fast, say it again.”
This arrogant attitude made Bai Ruqiao, who was used to the kind of service that catered to everyone in the future, frown.
But she didn’t say anything, she slowed down her speech again, and repeated each item one by one.
Although the saleswoman had a bad attitude, she still quickly gathered all the items.
“Detergent is two jiao and seven fen, mosquito coils are four jiao and three fen, shampoo is five jiao and four fen, toilet water is two jiao and five fen, toothpaste is one yuan and three jiao and five fen, thermos is 4.5 yuan, toilet paper is two rolls for two jiao and eight fen… a total of 17 yuan, seven jiao and eight fen, one thermos ticket.”
Bai Ruqiao directly counted the money and tickets and placed them on the counter.
Cheng Yueya and Fang Meizi had already quickly and carefully placed the items in the baskets.
The three of them went to the next counter and bought pillowcases, pillow covers, towels, needles and thread, cloth shoes, quilt linings, cotton, gloves…
They were all essential items that were light and easy to carry.
She didn’t buy too much of each item.
After all, she had stocked up on these things in her space.
Since she knew she could go back in time, she had been stocking up on things for decades.
Most of them were specially made according to the style of this era.
She even had a lot of 92-meter-wide cloth.
So she only needed to buy some common items to disguise herself.
There were fewer items in the food section, so she only bought a few kinds of candy and peach cakes to entertain guests.
Even so, the two baskets were basically full.
The three of them worked together to tie the baskets to the sides of the bicycle seat, and Bai Ruqiao went back to buy a basket and two baskets.
Then she pushed the bicycle to the food store.
The food store had a wider variety of goods.
They arrived not too late, although there were already quite a few people, there was still meat and vegetables.
Fang Meizi looked at the goods outside, while Bai Ruqiao and Cheng Yueya squeezed into the store with their baskets to buy things.
They split up to buy things.
Bai Ruqiao went to buy seasonings first.
She didn’t have any bottles, so she could only buy bottled soy sauce, vinegar, and oil.
It was more than twice as expensive as buying it in a bottle.
A full jin of soy sauce only cost three jiao, but a bottle cost eight jiao.
Anyway, she was only buying it once, and she would just pour the ones from her space into the bottles later.
She put the things away and glanced at the counter next door.
She bought two bottles of sugar water canned fruit and two cans of malt milk.
The sugar water canned fruit was for the father and son to have a taste of something fresh.
She kept the cans, which would be convenient for smuggling fruit from her space and eating it as canned fruit later.
She also planned to secretly exchange one can of malt milk for milk powder.
She had just put the things away when she heard Cheng Yueya’s clear voice.
“I said, you must have eaten too much salt this morning and are bored. Do I need to report to you whether I can afford to buy it or not? If you’re not buying anything, don’t stand here and talk nonsense. You’re so arrogant, you’d think you’ve reserved all the meat.”
The little girl was sharp-tongued, she spoke like a string of bullets without even taking a breath.
Bai Ruqiao quickly walked over.
She saw Cheng Yueya standing in front of the meat stall, arguing with an old woman.
Although she was small, her aura was not weak.
She stood with her hands on her hips, not backing down at all.
The old woman was a little embarrassed.
“Hey, I said, you little girl, why are you so rude? I just said a word and you’re making a big deal out of it. You’re so disrespectful to your elders, how did your family teach you?”
“Ha, you’re so polite, you’re cutting in line, scolding people, and acting like you’re old and powerful. That’s really impressive.”
“You…”
“What’s going on? What happened?” Bai Ruqiao walked to the stall and asked Cheng Yueya.
The little girl, as if she had found a revolutionary cause, immediately started chattering about what happened.
It wasn’t a big deal.
It was just that the old woman was in line behind Cheng Yueya. Seeing that only the two of them were left, and the little girl looked small and weak, she wanted to cut in line.
Cheng Yueya pushed her back.
The old woman was unhappy and started to insult her, calling her poor and saying she couldn’t afford meat but was showing off.
Cheng Yueya wasn’t one to take a loss, so she naturally retorted.
The old woman saw that Bai Ruqiao’s clothes were dirty and patched, and she looked down on her even more.
What good was it that she was pretty? She was still poor.
She impatiently shouted, “Looking at you two, I guess you can’t afford meat anyway. Save your money and buy some steamed buns, you might live a few more days. Move aside, don’t hog the toilet and not poop. You’re so slow and fussy, you’re wasting my time.”
Her words made the butcher frown, looking at her with disgust.
Cheng Yueya was even angrier, she sneered, “I said, why is your mouth so stinky early in the morning? It turns out you’ve been holding a belly full of shit and have nowhere to spit it out. You should have said you were looking for a toilet earlier. I’ll be kind and show you the way. Don’t run around and stink up the place.”
The butcher twitched the corner of his mouth.
This little girl was young, but she was quite… mature in her insults.
“You!”
“Mom, what’s wrong? Who are you arguing with?” A girl of seventeen or eighteen, carrying a basket, walked over.
“Oh, Lan, you’re here. Mom was bullied. These two little thieves teamed up to bully this old woman. It’s really unfair. What’s wrong with young people nowadays? They don’t know how to respect the elderly and love the young.”
The old woman, seeing her daughter, was like she had found a helper, her voice rose a few octaves.
Liu Lan frowned and looked up at the two girls.
But she froze when she saw Bai Ruqiao.
Cheng Yueya was about to say something, but Bai Ruqiao immediately pulled her aside.
“Master, please tie up the rest of the meat for us, we’ll take it all.”
There was only one piece of meat left on the table, about 20 jin, half of which was fat.
Normally, Bai Ruqiao wouldn’t buy fatty meat.
People in this era preferred to buy fatty meat, but she liked lean meat.
She had specifically told Cheng Yueya not to buy fatty meat.
But she had seen the old woman’s eyes constantly looking at the fatty meat.
She probably cut in line because she was afraid that Cheng Yueya would buy the fatty meat.
So she simply bought it.
“What did you say? You’re so arrogant. You have so many tickets, why are you acting like a garlic bulb?”
The old woman wanted to argue again as soon as she heard this.
The butcher also looked at Bai Ruqiao, “This meat is nineteen jin.”
He obviously doubted if she could eat that much.
Bai Ruqiao immediately counted the tickets and money and handed them over.
The butcher took a look and didn’t say anything else. He quickly cut the meat and tied it with straw rope.
Cheng Yueya frowned, thinking that Bai Ruqiao had bought so much to vent her anger for her, she felt guilty.
“Little Qiao Jie…”
Bai Ruqiao immediately put the meat in her basket, “Can you carry it?”
“I can, I can.”
“Then let’s go, we still need to buy vegetables.” Bai Ruqiao said, ignoring the mother and daughter who were stunned in place, and pulled Cheng Yueya towards the vegetable counter.
“Wait!” Seeing that they were about to leave, the old woman quickly tried to stop them.
“Who told you to buy it all? If you take it all, how will other people get any? You’re so young, why are you so selfish?”
“You…” Cheng Yueya was so angry that she wanted to scold her again. This old hag wouldn’t stop, would she?
But Bai Ruqiao held her down.
Bai Ruqiao turned around and smiled at the old woman.
“Sorry, I didn’t see any sign saying that you can’t buy all the meat. Look at what you’re saying. Should I return some? Master, do you think that’s okay?”
The butcher, who was cleaning up the table, looked impatient and said gruffly, “Once the meat is sold, it can’t be returned. The stall is closing, everyone go.”
Bai Ruqiao looked at the old woman with a helpless expression, “Then there’s really no way. You can’t force us to engage in speculation, can you?
That’s not okay. As a member of socialist society,
We must firmly and unwaveringly respond to the call, set an example, maintain social stability, and not be the scum that undermines the socialist foundation.
Auntie, your thoughts are not right, they’re too wrong. I advise you to change them, don’t accidentally implicate your whole family.”
Hearing this, the old woman was stunned. How could she undermine the socialist foundation? How could she be wrong? She hadn’t done anything yet.
