Xue Li waved his hand and said, “Sister-in-law, don’t mention it!” After a pause, he added, “Then, Sister-in-law, I’ll take Dr. Su back to the hospital first.”
“Alright.”
Watching the truck drive away, Wen Ci hugged the box of instant noodles and walked toward the entrance of the residential area. A guardhouse stood at the gate, ensuring security.
Anyone who could enter the military compound didn’t need to have their identity checked.
Wen Ci stood at the entrance of the guardhouse and asked, “Where is Huo Jingyuan’s house?”
Inside the guardhouse were two young soldiers. From the youthful looks on their faces, Wen Ci guessed they had just joined the military.
“Who are you?”
“I’m Huo Jingyuan’s wife.”
Hearing this, the two inside widened their eyes, their expressions filled with disbelief. They whispered to each other, “The King of Hell, Huo, actually got married?!”
Wen Ci didn’t catch what they said and continued, “Can you take me there?”
“Of course, of course.”
One of the soldiers stepped out. He took the box of instant noodles from Wen Ci’s hands and said with a smile, “Sister-in-law, my name is Zhang Yuan. I’ll take you there.”
“Thank you.”
As they walked into the residential area, Wen Ci noticed that most of the courtyards were empty, with no signs of occupancy. She couldn’t help but ask, “Has no one moved in yet?”
Zhang Yuan replied, “The houses in the residential area have already been assigned, but most of the officers’ families haven’t arrived yet, so it looks a bit empty.”
“It doesn’t seem like anyone has been living here regularly either?”
Zhang Yuan explained further, “If the families haven’t arrived, the officers have to stay in the dormitories.”
Huo Jingyuan had been assigned a three-bedroom bungalow located in the central area of the residential compound, with its own small courtyard. Wen Ci glanced around the yard.
It could be used to grow some vegetables or something.
Wen Ci asked, “Is there a place in the compound to buy seeds?”
“No,” Zhang Yuan shook his head. “If you want to buy vegetable seeds, you’ll have to go to Haishi or ask someone to bring them back for you.”
The door to the house wasn’t locked. Wen Ci pushed it open.
Zhang Yuan helped place the box of instant noodles on the table in the living room. “Sister-in-law, I’ll head back now. I need to return to my post.”
“Thank you, Xiao Zhang.”
“No need to thank me, no need.”
…
Wen Ci took a pack of instant noodles from the box. It was already 3 p.m., but fortunately, she had bought a bag earlier that morning while shopping at the mall.
The house had running water. Wen Ci boiled a pot of water and found a few patterned ceramic bowls in the kitchen cabinet.
Inside the cabinet were also coffee grounds and a set of delicate coffee cups.
Wen Ci raised an eyebrow.
It seemed Huo Jingyuan had been living quite comfortably here in the northwest.
While waiting for the water to boil, Wen Ci took a look around the three rooms. Only the master bedroom’s bed was made, and the closet was already filled with her clothes.
Wen Ci bit her lip.
Did that mean she would really have to share a bed with Huo Jingyuan tonight?!
Last night at the guesthouse, Huo Jingyuan had taken a blanket from his suitcase and slept on the floor, while Wen Ci slept on the bed.
Wen Ci shook her head, pushing the thought out of her mind.
After all, they were a married couple. If it came to it, they’d just do it!
After eating her fill, Wen Ci felt drowsiness creeping in. She stretched, washed the bowls, and returned to the master bedroom. The sun was shining brightly outside.
She drew the curtains, and the room was instantly plunged into darkness.
Wen Ci was pleasantly surprised. She hadn’t expected the curtains from this era to have such strong light-blocking effects.
On weekends, she could now sleep in during the day with peace of mind.
