Chapter 17 Refusing to Evacuate

When Fu Jingmo woke up Lin Mu, they could already see the words “Yichang” on the toll station from a distance.

From where they parked the car to the toll station and further ahead for several kilometers, it was crowded with empty private cars and trucks, blocking the way.

It seems that the situation in the city is not optimistic…

Fu Jingmo parked the car in a hidden spot by the roadside and turned to look at Lin Mu. “We need to get out of the car and wait for the crowd to pass before finding another one up ahead.”

Rubbing his eyes, Lin Mu asked, “Why didn’t you wake me up earlier?”

His voice was still a bit groggy from just waking up. Fu Jingmo looked at the small tuft of hair sticking up on his forehead and casually smoothed it down.

“Not far, I’ve almost recovered. The successful mutation will greatly enhance my physical strength and senses.”

As Lin Mu smelled the sudden scent of pine wood approaching, he was startled but didn’t move away. His ears felt slightly warm.

Fu Jingmo naturally retracted his hand and looked around. “Let’s go down and head towards the toll station.”

Lin Mu nodded, picked up his bag, and got out of the car.

The two of them proceeded along the outside of the highway fence. Fortunately, with the cars blocking the way, it wasn’t easy for the zombies to gather in this area.

After the heavy rain, the weather returned to being hot, baking the cemented highway as the two of them walked to the toll station, both with fine sweat on their foreheads.

The barrier at the toll station had already been smashed, and the people in the glass kiosk had long turned into zombies, with half of their bodies leaning out of the window, snarling at Lin Mu and Fu Jingmo.

Without lingering, the two passed the toll station. Along the roadside was a row of low buildings, with large signs reading “Car Wash,” “Auto Repair,” and “Eat” at the entrance, common auto repair shops seen before toll stations.

But there was no sign of life…

It was close to noon, and the sun was intense, so the two prepared to find a place to rest for a while.

As they descended from the roadside, there were few zombies in front of these shops. Fu Jingmo cautiously surveyed the surroundings, raising his eyebrows slightly. “There are people nearby.”

Lin Mu was always vigilant, having experienced the events in the town and seen the dangers of human nature. He nodded, understanding the situation.
They passed two storefronts, both of which had been damaged, and continued forward, stopping at the entrance of the third shop.

The windows and doors of this auto repair shop were relatively intact. Fu Jingmo walked ahead, opened the door, and the two stepped inside.

This type of shop allowed cars to enter for washing, so there was a fairly large open space inside, making it difficult for zombies to hide.

After closing the door and finding a clean spot, the two sat down to eat. Lin Mu took out the food from his bag and handed it to Fu Jingmo, then bowed his head to eat.

The military personnel have come up several times to notify, and the last few evacuation vehicles have begun to arrange for people to get on board.

He Ze sat on the chair, brow furrowed. This was a two-person dormitory, and his roommate was named Wu Fei.

Wu Fei, holding his luggage, couldn’t help but exclaim to the unmoving He Ze, “He Ze, are you really not leaving? There’s still half an hour, you still have time to pack your things.”

He Ze shook his head and said with difficulty, “Mu Mu will come to find me…”

“How do you know if he’s still alive? Maybe your friend has already turned into…,” Wu Fei sighed. “If you don’t leave now, there won’t be another chance. Even if you go to the safe zone, isn’t it the same? You know there are zombies all over the playground now. If our student population wasn’t so small, we wouldn’t have had a chance to evacuate.”

He Ze forced a wry smile. “Quick, go on, Wu Fei. I really won’t leave. Mu Mu will definitely come.”

Since that night when he spoke to Lin Mu, the two hadn’t been able to contact each other again because of the network’s paralysis.

But he remembered Mu Mu saying that when the rain stopped, he would come to find him…

The school was densely populated, and when the mutation began, it was like a hell on earth.

The cafeteria, playground, classrooms, all filled with cries and screams.

He Ze originally had a physical education class, but nearing the end of the term, the classes were all given to the math teacher, so he was resting in the faculty dormitory.

The staff dormitory is behind the cafeteria, quiet and with few people.

However, from a distance, he could see the tragic scene in the cafeteria, because it was the last class, and many students were having their meals in the cafeteria. The cries echoed throughout the entire school.

Just like what he saw in the video, the students turned into zombies, biting their once familiar classmates and teachers…

Blood spattered, the concrete floor was instantly dyed red, and there were mutilated corpses and broken meat residues on the ground…

He and Wu Fei cowered in the dormitory, not daring to go out. There were still many other teachers in the building, but no one dared to go out.

They nervously locked the downstairs door, not daring to make a sound.

Gunshots rang out on the playground, and the military came to rescue them for evacuation.
