Criminal Investigation Files: Chapter 30

Chapter 30

Qincheng is located north of Nancheng. Here, there is no confinement of gloomy and rainy weather. The temperature is three or four degrees lower than in Nancheng. After getting off the train, Lu Siyu took a deep breath of fresh air, only to be choked by the cold, abrasive wind, causing him to cough. Compared to the vibrant spring atmosphere and lush greenery in the south, here is still desolate. Everywhere one looks, it’s gray soil – the sky, the earth, and the people, all immersed in a dryness that carries a hint of the pungency of strong liquor.

It was Song Wen’s first time in Qincheng, and everything seemed a bit unfamiliar. The average height of the people here appeared to be slightly taller than in Nancheng, but fortunately, they were tall enough not to stand out in the crowd.

When on a business trip, one couldn’t be too particular. The two of them had breakfast at a roadside stall outside the train station. Song Wen had soy milk and fried dough sticks, while Lu Siyu ordered a bowl of white congee with a piece of tofu fermented in bean curd.

After the meal, they hit the road. Lin Wanwan’s home was not in the city but in a nearby town. Against Lu Siyu’s insistence, they didn’t take an intercity bus this time. Instead, they hailed a taxi, maneuvering through the streets to find their way according to the address. Eventually, they arrived at Lin Wanwan’s home.

It was an older neighborhood with an eight-story building that lacked an elevator. All households had installed anti-theft iron bars on their windows, but in different specifications, creating a somewhat disorderly appearance. Clothes and quilts of various colors hung outside the balconies. Walking into the narrow and pitch-dark corridor, each doorstep was cluttered with miscellaneous items. Such a style was not commonly seen in the south, but fortunately, being in the northern part, even if the corridor was dim, there was no sign of mold.

Song Wen reached the door of 403, knocked, and had arranged with Zhu Xiao to contact Lin Wanwan’s family in advance. Lin Wanwan’s stepfather was a long-haul truck driver who was often away from home. This time, his destination was far away, and it would take four or five days before he returned. So, they had only arranged to meet Lin Wanwan’s mother and requested her not to go out today.

The door opened, and someone looked through the iron gate first. Then the inner door opened, revealing the head of a woman. She was in her forties, tied her hair in a ponytail, but the color was yellowish and sparse. Perhaps due to poor sleep, she had deep eye sockets, severe dark circles, and pronounced wrinkles. She wore simple yet clean clothes, and on her, Song Wen saw the same gentleness as Lin Wanwan.

Song Wen presented his police officer’s ID, explained their purpose, and the woman ushered them inside. The house wasn’t spacious, but it had a decent height. The layout was somewhat different from the current popular pattern in the south, with almost no dining room. The living room served as both a dining and TV-watching area, followed by two rooms – one for adults and one for the children.

Lin Wanwan’s mother poured water for them while expressing her concerns. “After that incident, I’ve been worried. My son is still in school, and his dad is not around. The school teachers said she’s fine, so I didn’t rush over. Still, I couldn’t sleep well, always worried.” As she spoke, she opened a cupboard, saying, “Oh, my memory. Where did I put the tea leaves?”

Hearing this, Song Wen pressed his lips slightly, exchanged a glance with Lu Siyu, and thought he had initially believed that Lin Wanwan’s parents didn’t come because of a strained family relationship. However, the tone and concern of this woman didn’t seem like an act. Looking at the woman still crouching in the kitchen searching for tea leaves, Song Wen spoke, “Auntie, no need to be so polite. We’ll stay for a while and leave. Just want to understand the family situation of Wanwan.”

Before Lu Siyu arrived, he had also reviewed the information about this woman. Her last name was Wang, named Wang Wenyan. In her early years, she worked in a clothing factory in the south and later worked in a supermarket here. In the past two years, she had been resting at home.

Wang Wenyan, after hearing Song Wen’s words, finally stopped hesitating. She brought two glasses of water for Song Wen and Lu Siyu and poured one for herself. Then, she sat on the stool across from the sofa.

As usual, it was Song Wen asking the questions, and Lu Siyu opened his notebook to record. Song Wen went through the routine, inquiring about basic information such as the ages and occupations of family members. Then, he got to the main topic, “Auntie, could you tell me about your daughter’s basic situation?”

Wang Wenyan spoke, “My daughter, Wanwan, is a good child. From childhood to now, she has never caused any worries for the adults. She excelled in her studies and was obedient and sensible. It’s just that I wasn’t good…”

At this point, she sighed, as if recalling her unfortunate marriage, “My ex-husband’s family is quite traditional and somewhat biased towards males. After I married into that family, women couldn’t sit at the table during meals. When Wanwan was born, my mother-in-law was very unhappy, saying that I was a burden, and that their son’s three-generation lineage was about to be cut off because of me. During the postpartum period, I was fed only porridge for a month. At that time, I weighed only eighty pounds and was almost depressed. Later, they wanted to force me to divorce my ex-husband, let him marry another woman, and have a son for them. At that time, I couldn’t accept the idea of divorce and left my daughter there while I went to work.”

Wang Wenyan, when mentioning Lin Wanwan, had a kind of pride that was hard to conceal, but at the same time, there was a hint of guilt.

“During the time Lin Wanwan was in your ex-husband’s family, who mainly took care of her?”

“Mainly my mother-in-law. She is a tough woman with a sharp tongue but a kind heart. Although she was reluctant with her words, she still took care of Wanwan in her actions.” Wang Wenyan rubbed her hands, “That family was a bit oppressive, with many rules, clear hierarchies, and Wanwan’s grandfather was in charge of the entire household. The old man was very strict, with a lot of discipline, and no room for mistakes in his eyes. Wanwan’s father had a more irritable temper, and sometimes, when angry, he would hit the children.”

It was a traditional family, with a preference for males, clear hierarchy, and occasional incidents of domestic violence. A young girl suddenly without her mother’s care, placed in such a family – although Wang Wenyan did not provide specific details, it was enough for people to imagine what she might have gone through.

Song Wen frowned slightly, “At that time, Lin Wanwan was still very young, right? Aren’t you heartbroken to leave your daughter?”

Wang Wenyan nodded, “Of course, one would naturally feel heartbroken for their own child. When Wanwan was ten years old, I finally came to terms with it and divorced that man.”

“So during that time, it was just you and your daughter living together?”

“It was a bit difficult during that period. It’s not an exaggeration to say that we relied on each other during those two years. After two years, Wanwan graduated from elementary school, and through acquaintances, I married my current husband.”

Song Wen had read the information. Wang Wenyan’s current husband, surnamed Li, had a high school education and worked as a long-distance truck driver. His resume was very simple, enduring hardship and exposure to the elements every month, but his salary remained low.

“Later, I gave birth to a son for him, and Wanwan also grew up. She excelled in her studies, performed well in exams, and even went to college. She’s a pride for our whole family. In these years, I’ve always supported her. Although she’s a girl, she hasn’t suffered any setbacks on my side.” She brought her daughter close to her, fulfilling her role as a mother by responding to every request, using these actions as a form of compensation for her daughter’s unfortunate childhood.

“Since Lin Wanwan entered junior high, have you been taking care of her daily life and studies?”

“This child, Wanwan, is quite smart and hasn’t caused me much worry. As for myself, I’ve been a failure since childhood, not excelling in academics and lacking perseverance in many things. I wasn’t good at studying, didn’t have a long-term plan, and got married when I encountered a man. I often tell Wanwan, ‘Don’t become a person like your mom. Aim for a better life.'”

When the topic of educating children came up, Wang Wenyan suddenly found something to talk about. For a homemaker like her, a child was her best report card, especially having a daughter as obedient, well-behaved, and academically successful as Wanwan. In her ordinary life, there were now shining points and places she could be proud of.

Song Wen continued to ask, “After Wanwan entered university, did she seldom come home?”

Wang Wenyan’s initially aroused interest dimmed a bit. She ran her hand through her hair, easing her embarrassment. “She’s quite busy with her studies and part-time work. We cover her tuition fees, provide a modest living allowance, and if she ever says she’s short on money, we would do everything to send it to her.” She sighed, “With parents like us, it’s quite embarrassing for her.”

“Has Lin Wanwan ever mentioned how her life at school is, or what her relationships are like with her dormitory mates?”

“Wanwan said she’s doing well at school, and both teachers and classmates take good care of her. I’ve seen a few kids from her dormitory when I went to bring things to Wanwan. They all seemed like good kids. How could this happen…” Wang Wenyan sighed with regret. “I remember there was a tall and beautiful girl, and another one who looked pretty fair, seemingly from a good family.”

“She also had a classmate named Guo Hua. Have you met her?”

“I have an impression of that girl surnamed Guo, but Wanwan didn’t mention her much.” As Wang Wenyan spoke, she ran her hand through her hair again.

Lu Siyu furrowed his brows slightly, contemplating the nature of the “friendship” between Lin Wanwan and Guo Hua. Before Song Wen could continue questioning, he lifted his gaze and looked at the woman’s rough hands. “When Lin Wanwan was at home, did you usually handle the household chores?”

The woman nodded, as if serving her children and husband at home was a matter of course. “Cooking, washing dishes, doing laundry, cleaning—these are all things I do. The kids are busy with school, and my husband is busy with work, often away from home, working hard to earn a living.” She sighed. “Officer, there’s nothing wrong with my daughter, Wanwan. This time, she’s definitely just implicated. She’s a well-behaved, kind-hearted girl.”

Lu Siyu noted down this information, biting the cap of his pen and pondering. Some of the information seemed different from the clues they had known before. Although Lin Wanwan had a humble background, it appeared that most of the abuse and mistreatment occurred before she turned ten.

Song Wen asked a few more routine questions, and Wang Wenyan answered them one by one. Glancing at the clock, which was about to reach half-past ten, Song Wen stood up and said, “Can we take a look at Lin Wanwan’s belongings?”

Wang Wenyan led them to the children’s room, which had two beds—one with guardrails and one without. Obviously, the one with guardrails was for Lin Wanwan’s younger brother.

The boy was still young, and Lin Wanwan had gone out for further studies, so they hadn’t separated into different rooms. Inside the room, there was a cabinet with several layers. The items on one side belonged to the girl, neatly arranged, while the boy’s belongings were messy and piled up, even though there was still unused space in Lin Wanwan’s section.

Wang Wenyan explained, “Wanwan is not at home now, but we’ve never touched her belongings. Her brother also dares not go through her things.”

Song Wen leaned in to take a look. Inside the cabinet were books, textbooks, exercise books, and a few world classics.

There were also dolls in the cabinet—Barbie dolls bought from the mall, arranged in sets of four or five, brightly displayed. They seemed out of sync with the overall style of the room. Song Wen noticed a box inside, a biscuit tin from the past. He reached for it, opened it, and found a box full of chocolate wrappers—colorful wrappers neatly folded into the shape of a dancing girl. He had seen Lin Wanwan folding these during the interrogation. He looked up and asked Wang Wenyan, “What’s this?”

Wang Wenyan replied, “Wanwan brought this box from her father when she came over. Although my ex-husband occasionally scolded her, he often bought her candies. Later, when she came over, she occasionally asked me for sweets, and I would buy them for her, accumulating this large box.”

After inspecting the bookshelf, Song Wen and Lu Siyu searched the room. There were only some old clothes, nothing special.

At that moment, the door was suddenly knocked.

Hearing the sound, Wang Wenyan’s expression changed, and she ran to open the door. As soon as the lock was undone, the door was forcefully pushed open from the outside. “Mom! Did you forget to put my sports shoes in my backpack again?” With these words, a boy about ten years old rushed in. He had developed well, slightly chubby, and looked like a little adult.

“Is there sports class today? Why didn’t you tell me in advance?” Wang Wenyan stood on the side, feeling a bit awkward, rubbing her hands.

“I told you! I told you a long time ago. Besides, we have sports class at this time every week. It’s been over two months since school started. How can you not remember?” The boy ran over, grabbed the cold cup on the table, took a few sips, and then noticed the guests. He looked at Song Wen and Lu Siyu and asked, “What are you guys doing?”

Song Wen was about to speak when Wang Wenyan gave him a meaningful look and said, “These are your sister’s school teachers, here for a home visit to learn about your sister’s family situation.”

The boy was Lin Wanwan’s younger brother, named Li Zichen, nine and a half years old. Although they shared the same mother, they had different fathers, and their surnames were even different. Li Zichen turned his eyes and asked, “What happened to my sister?” At the age of about ten, he was at that half-understanding stage.

Lu Siyu didn’t expose Wang Wenyan’s lie and casually fabricated another one, “There’s an opportunity for a foreign exchange student at school, and we’re here for a home visit investigation.”

Li Zichen nodded, “Oh. My sister is good at studying, and the spot should definitely be given to her.”

Seeing Li Zichen here, Wang Wenyan seemed unwilling to continue questioning. She brought out a plate of oranges from the kitchen and said, “Since you’re all here, take a break. Have an orange before you leave.” As she spoke, she handed the plate to the child.

Unexpectedly, this gesture provoked the boy’s displeasure. He pushed Wang Wenyan, and her body fell backward. The oranges in the plate rolled to the ground.

Li Zichen said, “I don’t want oranges. I want my sports shoes. I made an appointment to play soccer with them. You always forget things and can’t do anything right. You’re so useless; no wonder my sister doesn’t want to come home.” He didn’t mind whether the visitors were his sister’s school teachers or anyone else and expressed his dissatisfaction right there in the living room.

Wang Wenyan sighed, got up, picked up a few oranges, and then fetched a pair of washed sneakers from the balcony. Li Zichen stomped his feet, saying, “You haven’t tied the shoelaces yet!”

Wang Wenyan had to sit back on the sofa and tie the shoelaces. Only then did Li Zichen happily run back to class. After sending the child away, Wang Wenyan turned to look at Song Wen and Lu Siyu, seemingly a bit embarrassed, “This child, I’ve spoiled him.” As she spoke, she laughed, seemingly not feeling embarrassed at all, as if it were a natural and normal part of life.

Song Wen awkwardly said, “Kids will be kids.”

Seeing that they had asked enough questions, the two got up to leave. When they came out of Lin Wanwan’s home, Song Wen checked the time. “We still have some time. Should we ask the neighbors or something?”

Lu Siyu nodded, “Her mother’s words can’t be fully trusted. There are some doubts in this family…”

Just as the two were discussing this, an elderly woman suddenly emerged from the front of the intersection. She had white hair, wore a red headband, and stared at them with sharp eyes. “You two, sneaky-looking people, who are you?”

Song Wen was startled by the sudden appearance of the old lady, who approached completely silently, unexpectedly emerging from behind the wall. He quickly took out his credentials, “We’re the police, here for an inquiry.” He then looked at the old lady, “And you?”

The old lady pointed to her red headband with great pride and assertiveness, “I’m the director of the neighborhood committee in this area. Why didn’t you inform our neighborhood committee when you police came? Who allowed you to enter? This is not proper!” The old lady took a suspicious look at Song Wen’s credentials and raised her eyelids, folded four times: “Police from Nancheng? Why did you come to our Qincheng?”

Song Wen thought, there’s not even a gatekeeper here, who knew they would be so strict. With patience, he briefly explained, “Auntie, we’re from Nancheng. There’s a case there, and one of the related persons has connections here. We came to visit as part of our investigation, specifically to Unit 3, Apartment 403.”

“Oh, you went to Lin Wanwan’s house.” The old lady seemed pleased with being addressed as “Auntie” and handed back Song Wen’s credentials with a somewhat trusting look.

Song Wen and Lu Siyu didn’t expect Lin Wanwan to be so famous, and they exchanged glances. Song Wen put away his credentials and casually asked the old lady, “Yes, it’s their house. We just visited Lin Wanwan’s mother. Do you also know Lin Wanwan?”

The old lady gossipingly said, “That girl is quite smart. She’s famous in our town. If it weren’t for her mother causing trouble, she would have had suitors lining up. By the way, did something happen to this girl?”

As the case was still under investigation, Song Wen didn’t want to reveal details. He replied, “She’s fine. It’s one of Lin Wanwan’s dormitory classmates who got into trouble. We came here to understand the situation.”

“Oh, I see.” The old lady showed a hint of disappointment as she lost interest in the gossip. Without thinking too much about why Lin Wanwan’s classmates got into trouble.
“Auntie, do you know about their family? You mentioned that Lin Wanwan’s mother caused trouble. What happened?” Song Wen asked, hoping to get different perspectives from the neighbors. These parents and relatives around them were likely to paint a rosy picture. He wanted to hear something different.

The old lady became spirited talking about these matters. “Ah, that family’s wife, Xiao Wang, used to work as a shelf stocker in the small supermarket around here. She got fired for making mistakes and has been idling at home since then. Speaking of which, that family is quite fortunate… It was during the winter vacation three years ago. We didn’t have natural gas here back then; every household used gas. Xiao Wang was at home, Xiao Li didn’t go out to drive, and her younger son was also at home. Lin Wanwan, however, got up early to go to the library for studying. Later, the neighbors smelled gas from their house and quickly reported it. The police, firefighters, and emergency services all came. The whole family was unconscious and had to stay in the hospital for several days before recovering.”

In a small town like this, a family nearly dying from gas poisoning was considered big news.

The old lady continued to tantalize, “Guess what happened later. It turned out Xiao Wang boiled water in the morning but went back to sleep under the quilt because she felt cold. The boiling water extinguished the gas, and the whole family almost died from gas inhalation. Fortunately, that girl Lin Wanwan was lucky. She went out early in the morning; otherwise, she would have been unlucky too. But after this incident, no one came to propose to Lin Wanwan. After all, who would want a mother-in-law like hers?”

Lu Siyu frowned, “Did Wang Wenyan say these things?”

The old lady said, “Heh, luckily, you are both police officers. Where can you find a party who admits to their mistakes?”

Song Wen wondered, “Didn’t you say the police came? Why didn’t they check fingerprints or conduct an investigation?”

“I have relatives in the Public Security Bureau. At that time, things were strange. They did check, but there were no fingerprints, which made it even more strange. Anyway, initially, Xiao Wang said she didn’t boil water, but water wouldn’t go to the gas on its own. Her husband, son, and daughter all believed it was her doing. Later, she admitted because no one died in the incident, it was settled. They replaced the gas stove with a leak-proof one before daring to let her continue cooking.” The old lady spoke vividly, as if she had personally handled the case, knowing every detail.

This incident was indeed unusual. Song Wen frowned, looked back at the direction of Lin Wanwan’s house window, and then turned to Lu Siyu. Lu Siyu lowered his head, habitually biting his nails, seemingly deep in thought.

Later, the old lady gossiped for a few more moments but didn’t provide any valuable information.

Initially, the old lady had actively provided them with clues, but later, they had to chase after her to inquire about relevant details. The old lady became impatient, frequently checking her watch, “Oh my, I’ve told you everything I know. I still need to go buy groceries and pick up my grandson.” Only then did Song Wen release her.

Lu Siyu turned his head and looked at Song Wen. Song Wen immediately understood and said, “Let’s go have a meal first. We need to hurry back and check for progress from the others later.”

The town wasn’t too big, and they chose a small restaurant to sit down. Song Wen ordered dishes, and as usual, Lu Siyu found someone to heat up the takeout he brought.

It was evident that Lu Siyu had been pushed to a certain extent. Even the food had turned into a quick and simple tomato and scrambled egg dish, chicken with mushrooms, and crab stir-fried with ginger and green onions. The dishes were simple, but the ingredients were fresh. The tomatoes were peeled, offering a balance of sourness and sweetness, and the crab was cleaned thoroughly, with even the crab claws cracked open to enhance the flavor. The dishes made by the chef in this small restaurant were mediocre, but each dish was saltier than the last. In the end, Song Wen even scooped some of the food from Lu Siyu’s takeout box and ate it with rice.

Just after finishing their meal, Fu Linjiang’s call came in. Song Wen put on his earphones and used the side with a microphone for himself, handing the other end to Lu Siyu. Fu Linjiang’s voice came through, “We’ve made some new discoveries over here. When eating together with Dong Fang and accompanying her for shopping, it wasn’t always Ma Aijing; sometimes it was Lin Wanwan. We found a short segment of surveillance footage from the supermarket downstairs of the school dormitory. Dong Fang swiped her card there, and Lin Wanwan opened the packaging and ate directly on the spot.” Today, they went to the school to fill in the gaps in their investigation. They retrieved all the available data, revealing some details that were overlooked during the initial survey.

“Also, Ma Aijing indeed had a romantic relationship with their professor. However, the professor claimed that she only asked him to give her extra points on her paper, and as for the overseas exchange, she was chosen because exchange students required proficiency in English and a good image. Ma Aijing was a good fit, as they had explained to Guo Hua at the time, and Guo Hua was calm and had no objections. The paper that Ma Aijing got extra points for was a joint effort. Can you guess who the other author is?”

Song Wen guessed, “Lin Wanwan?”

Fu Linjiang exclaimed, “How did you guess right?”

Song Wen snorted, “You made me guess, and it certainly wouldn’t be Dong Fang’s. It wouldn’t be the one she collaborated with Guo Hua on either.”

Fu Linjiang provided more information, focusing on one main theme: originally, in their reasoning at the crime scene, they thought Lin Wanwan was detached from the dormitory. However, now it seemed that her relationship with the others in the dormitory was much closer than their initial reasoning suggested.

“Anyway, she’s living comfortably, spending Dong Fang’s money while enjoying the paper score boost from Ma Aijing. It’s nothing like the pitiful appearance she showed when facing us. We also checked the surveillance footage. On that day, Lin Wanwan helped retrieve the box of chocolates in the morning. I now lean towards the fact that this matter is closely related to Lin Wanwan. She went to the express delivery point to pick up the chocolates, knowing that there was still remaining poison in Guo Hua’s possession, giving her ample time to commit the crime. However, we still haven’t found a motive for the murder.”

“Are there any other developments in other aspects?” Song Wen asked again.

Fu Linjiang replied, “The forensic team is still examining those chocolates, but they’ve encountered a problem. The chocolates don’t have any names written on them. It can only prove that chocolates have been dropped in various places. The specific person who left traces cannot be determined.”

Song Wen felt a bit helpless, but he could only accept this result, saying, “Alright, I understand. Keep up the good work, and we’ll gather more information when I return.”

After hanging up the phone, Lu Siyu took off his headphones and said, “I noticed it earlier. The relationships within the dormitory may not be as simple as they appear on the surface. That day, I felt that Lin Wanwan’s place was too clean. Later, I figured it out…”

Song Wen thought for a moment and immediately understood Lu Siyu’s meaning, “What we see is what others want us to see. What we ask is what others want us to ask.”

After saying this, Song Wen’s gaze fell on Lu Siyu. He remembered the conversation he had with Zhou Yining earlier. This statement seemed to fit Lu Siyu as well.

However, Lu Siyu didn’t notice the unusual look in Song Wen’s eyes. He lowered his head and said, “We don’t know the true relationships within the dormitory.”

Someone had cleaned up the dormitory. Perhaps there was premeditation days before the arrival of the police, especially in Lin Wanwan’s area, which was exceptionally tidy. Ironically, this cleanliness made her stand out.

Song Wen sighed, “The relationships among these people are more complex than we imagined.” This case was different from the ones they had encountered before. Initially, they underestimated the complexity of the case. Looking back now, the entire story might be even more bewildering than they had imagined.

Leaving the small restaurant, the two walked on the unfamiliar streets of the city. The narrow paths here were narrower than those in the south, with tall evergreen plants lining the sides. Just beginning to sprout new shoots, Song Wen didn’t rush to hail a cab. He turned to Lu Siyu and asked, “What do you think about Lin Wanwan’s family?”

Lu Siyu didn’t answer directly but blinked and asked him back, “What do you think?”

Song Wen thought for a moment, “Lin Wanwan’s family is different from what I previously imagined. I thought her parents were indifferent and treated her poorly, leading to her gentle personality. But unexpectedly, her family is like this—her mother is very doting, her stepfather is honest but frequently absent, and her younger brother is rude and unreasonable, yet he values his sister a lot. On the surface, this family seems harmonious, but I always feel that something is not right.”

Lu Siyu’s face carried a cold demeanor, “Harmonious family? A forgetful mother, a father who is seldom at home, a rude brother, and a sister who is a suspected murderer. A near-death experience for the whole family due to gas poisoning—that’s a template for a horror story.”

Song Wen understood a simple truth: when different people look at the same thing, their perceptions can be completely different. This is also related to one’s life experiences. As a criminal investigator, Song Wen has always been straightforward, which enables him to adhere more firmly to his own sense of justice. However, it also prevents him from understanding the abnormal world in which criminals reside, and he cannot delve into those dark places to fathom their distorted minds. In short, he is a normal person who cannot think with a deviant mindset and does not know what deviants are thinking.

On the other hand, Lu Siyu seems to effortlessly see through what others are thinking.

At this moment, Song Wen feels that something is off with this family, but he doesn’t know exactly what. However, for Lu Siyu, it’s an entirely different story. With his revelation, Song Wen suddenly realized, “Do you think the gas poisoning incident wasn’t an accident?”

Lu Siyu murmured in agreement.

Song Wen stood up and said, “Whether it was an accident or not, we’ll find out by asking.”

Lu Siyu was taken aback, “Are you going to investigate this?”

The determined Song Wen picked up his bag, “Since we’re here, we should at least hear what the person involved has to say. Let’s go, we’ll make a surprise visit to Lin Wanwan’s house.”

With the case reaching this point, the pursuit of the truth is just a step away.
