Chapter 5: Determination
Cao Xiangnan, the original owner of this body, had been hit by a carriage, and even the doctor had shaken his head. With this accident, his job in town was gone; the shop had hired someone else. Now, Cao Xiangnan was lying in bed, just waiting to spend money. His a-mu [mother figure in a family] Chen Zhu didn’t like this fourth son. She wasn’t even willing to pay for the doctor’s visit and medicine, meaning she was leaving him to live or die on his own.
In this family, they were just waiting for him to die so they could wrap him in a straw mat and bury him. The original owner had indeed died, and what had come to life was a wisp of soul from another world.
During his coma, he remembered a pair of unfamiliar yet familiar hands taking care of him. Cao Xiangnan knew that person was his wife, Qi Wanfeng. Only this man was staying by his side, never abandoning him at this time.
From the time he woke up until now, Cao Xiangnan had only seen his wife and child. None of the other people in this family had appeared.
Knowing that he had left his original world and come here, Cao Xiangnan had no attachment to his previous life. His parents in his previous life had divorced when he was young, and neither side wanted him. He had lived with a mean-spirited grandmother since he was a child, and even that only relative had passed away the year before. He had nothing to miss in that world.
Cao Xiangnan had longed for a home since he was a child, a home with people who loved him and people he loved. Just a simple home would be enough. So, when he woke up and realized he had become someone else, with a wife and child, he wasn’t repulsed by it. Deep down, he was even looking forward to spending the rest of his life with them.
In his memories, Qi Wanfeng was a silent and hardworking person. Thinking of that face, full of numbness and sorrow, and the thin child beside him, Cao Xiangnan clenched his fist tightly at his side, determination in his eyes.
Cao Xiangnan, since you couldn’t take care of them, then let me take your place and take care of them!
“Doctor Sun, please come in.” Qi Wanfeng had gone to invite the doctor back without even telling his a-mu at home, acting on his own initiative.
As soon as Doctor Sun entered the door, carrying his medicine kit, he was seen by a-mu Chen Zhu at the entrance of the main room. As soon as Chen Zhu saw the doctor with his medicine kit entering, she raised her voice sharply and asked, “Qi Wanfeng, why did you bring the doctor back home, huh? Where does this family have the money to pay for a doctor and medicine? You…”
“A-mu, Si Lang [Cao Xiangnan’s childhood name] is awake. I invited the doctor to come and take a look at him,” Qi Wanfeng said, interrupting a-mu’s scolding before it could come out.
He was anxious. If it were normal times, he wouldn’t dare, but now he could only interrupt a-mu’s words, thinking to have the doctor see him first. He didn’t know how much time would be wasted here. Everything else could wait. Seeing a doctor was the most important thing. He was willing to bear a-mu’s scolding later.
“Si Lang is awake?” Hearing that he was awake, Chen Zhu’s face changed. That face certainly didn’t show joy because her child had woken up. Qi Wanfeng didn’t bother to care what a-mu was thinking. He smiled apologetically at Doctor Sun, gestured for him to enter, and said, “Doctor, this way please.”
Doctor Sun had been practicing medicine for decades and had seen all kinds of things. He had been invited once a few days ago to see Cao’s fourth son. The Cao family hadn’t invited him again for days. He had thought the person had passed away, but he didn’t expect that he had woken up now.
Living in the same village, he also knew what kind of people this family was. It was a pity for Cao’s fourth son, such a good child, still so young…
Alas, the elderly doctor could only sigh in his heart.
Qi Wanfeng led the doctor towards his room.
A trace of anxiety and worry flashed across Chen Zhu’s face. She wasn’t concerned that her fourth son had really woken up, but worried that if he really woke up, there would be a large sum of money needed to hire a doctor and buy medicine. Where would the family find extra money to support such an idler? It would be better if he died.
Seeing this, she also followed to see what was going on.
Chen Li, the eldest brother’s wife, and Wang Yan, the second brother’s wife, who came out of the room after hearing the noise, exchanged a glance and followed.
