The Stand-in Cannon Fodder Quits
The Stand-in Cannon Fodder Quits Chapter 9

The combat power of a little wild cat is not something a pet cat can compare to; its claws could scratch out a Clear River and the Qingming Festival Scroll for you.

Jian Yang had an injection to reduce his fever, and his temperature was gradually going down. His body still felt sore and uncomfortable, and after checking himself, there was nothing to feed. He crouched down and talked to the little cat calmly, “Calm down, I’m a wanderer just like you.”

“But we won’t compete with each other. We’ll each have our own food. I need to go now, so don’t jump on me and scratch me, okay?”

The little cat kept meowing and ran to rub against Jian Yang’s pants leg.

Jian Yang pet the cat a couple of times, then grabbed it by the scruff of its neck, “You followed me, not the other way around. I didn’t abduct you.”

The little cat meowed again.

Jian Yang said, “Don’t cling to me.”

They walked out of the gate, Jian Yang glanced at the little cat by his feet, “Hurry up, we’re welcoming a new life! I’ll make money to buy you some canned food!”

A loud thunder sounded.

Dark clouds covered the sky.

“It’s not going to rain, is it?” Jian Yang couldn’t believe it.

Splash—

Jian Yang quickly scooped the cat up and hid under a tree. The rain poured down.

“God, do what you can do, or retire if you can’t,” Jian Yang muttered.

Another thunderclap exploded!

He was planning to go to Wei Wei’s place to see if he could find a new role. He had just left the Guan family’s main gate when the rain caught him. Holding the little cat, his thoughts became clearer.

The only good thing since arriving here was that Guan Ciyan accidentally drew him a limited-edition card.

The closer he was to Guan Ciyan at the old mansion, the higher his chances of drawing a high-star card.

Now, as soon as he left the Guan family, it started raining.

Maybe, he could only stay close to Guan Ciyan.

Although he had traveled from another world and had free will, his actions were still affected by the plot. The original character’s storyline at this stage was to stay by Guan Ciyan’s side and pass information to Guan Jingyu. He had to carry out the original character’s actions.

Until the original character’s death in the story.

But he couldn’t just go seek death, right?

Jian Yang unconsciously rubbed the little cat in his arms, while rainwater from the falling leaves splashed onto his neck, feeling cold.

Splash, splash, splash…

The leaves couldn’t hold the rainwater, and both water and dry leaves fell to the ground. Yellowed, curled leaves stuck to Jian Yang’s shirt. Jian Yang pulled the little cat closer to his chest, sharing warmth. After getting soaked in the rain, he wondered if he would die on the street tomorrow.

If the plot leads to his death, could he die sooner?

Once this thought occurred, Jian Yang shook his head furiously.

What are you thinking, Jian Yang! Don’t you remember how you survived?

Suddenly, an umbrella appeared above his head.

Jian Yang looked up, and the voice of the butler reached his ears, “Mr. Jian, it’s raining. If you’re not in a hurry, why don’t you stay for the night?”

“Huh?” Jian Yang was confused, “Mr. Guan asked me to leave.”

“This isn’t the way of the Guan family to treat guests. Mr. Guan just asked me if a room was prepared for you. Come back with me, you’re still burning with fever.”

“Well…” Jian Yang was still pondering.

“Mr. Jian, this is the first time someone has protected Mr. Guan at the old mansion. Allow me the chance to thank you.”

The old butler, looking in his fifties, said these words, and Jian Yang found it hard to refuse the elderly man. Holding the little cat, he returned with the butler.

Guan Ciyan happened to come down from the second floor, shirtless, drinking from a bottle of ice water. His Adam’s apple bobbed as water droplets from the cold bottle ran down his chest and along his muscle lines. It was a pleasant sight, if not for the fact that Guan Ciyan looked so pale, he could’ve been on a magazine cover. Seeing Jian Yang drenched, with water marks on the floor from his wet pants, leaves stuck to his shoulder and chest, and the cat in his arms also looking disheveled, Guan Ciyan’s expression changed from grim to a smile.

He raised an eyebrow and asked the butler, “Where did you find him?”

“Not far from the gate,” the butler replied, lowering his head.

Guan Ciyan smiled, walking up to Jian Yang and gently rubbing the cat’s ears. “You ran quite bravely, why didn’t you run further?”

Under the eaves, Jian Yang simply gathered the little cat in his arms.

Leaves fell from his shoulder to the ground, revealing a shirt torn by a whip.

Guan Ciyan frowned. “Go upstairs, take a shower, and sleep.”

“Mr. Jian, your room is ready,” the butler led Jian Yang upstairs.

Guan Ciyan called out from behind, “Give him medicine again.”

Jian Yang looked back at him, thinking, Did this dog actually develop a conscience?

Then he immediately dismissed the thought, No dog has a conscience.

The room was already prepared with medicine. After the butler introduced everything, he asked, “Mr. Jian, do you need someone to help apply the medicine?”

“No, I’ll do it myself,” Jian Yang’s stomach growled.

The butler smiled. “Then I’ll prepare some supper for you.”

Jian Yang didn’t refuse, he was indeed hungry.

After taking a shower, the butler brought him wonton noodles. Jian Yang realized the room was so big, it resembled his living room back home, complete with a dining area, a dressing area, a terrace, and a wine cabinet. “This wouldn’t be Mr. Guan’s room, would it?”

Jian Yang was startled.

The butler shook his head. “No, Mr. Guan doesn’t like such complicated layouts. This is just the largest room in the villa.”

“So nice.” It seemed the butler wasn’t being insincere when he said he wanted to thank him.

“Mr. Jian,” the butler bowed, “In the past, Mr. Guan never left the old mansion so easily. We truly appreciate you.”

Jian Yang couldn’t stand it. The butler was old enough to be his father. He also bowed, “It can’t be that bad, sir, you’re still someone who can be bullied.”

The butler raised his head and saw Jian Yang bowing, then bent down again. “Sir, he’s not as he seems.”

“Yes, he’s much harsher than he looks.”

Guan Ciyan passed by outside the door: What are you doing?

Jian Yang: “We’re offering a toast.”

“Butler, I’m just thanking Mr. Jian for sending you home tonight.”

“Leave.” Guan Ciyan told the butler to leave, and entered the room, sitting on the bed.

Jian Yang, holding a little wonton, said, “Are your pants clean? Why sit on someone else’s bed!”

It was the first time in his life that Guan Ciyan was being rejected for sitting on his own bed.

Jian Yang’s petty attitude made him furious, and he wanted to pick him up and throw him out, but he kept remembering how Jian Yang had stood in front of him when he was burning with a fever.

Forget it, what does it matter to argue with such a little thing?

But there was no way he would move. He just sat on the bed. “What’s wrong with your eyes?”

In a fit of anger, Jian Yang wanted to vent but couldn’t. “My brother and I are twins. He developed well, I didn’t. I was born like this, it’s not a big deal.”

“Then why are you saying it’s itchy if it’s no big deal?” Guan Ciyan, irritated by Jian Yang rubbing his eyes, felt a sense of annoyance. Jian Yang looked so pitiful, like a fragile bug that couldn’t be squashed.

“Oh, so it’s itchy and uncomfortable.”

“That means something’s wrong.”

“It doesn’t matter much, I can bear with it.”

Guan Ciyan: “……”

Guan Ciyan: “Tomorrow, I’ll take you to the hospital. Stay put.”

Jian Yang, with his greasy mouth slightly open, widened his almond eyes to look at Guan Ciyan. Guan Ciyan avoided his gaze, “Stop making trouble, or you can get out.”

Guan Ciyan quickly left Jian Yang’s room.

Jian Yang lay there in a daze for a long time, thinking… would his eyes ever get better?

Who wants to keep using eye drops forever if they can live normally?

After finishing his food, Jian Yang washed up and lay in bed, his body exhausted to the extreme, his mind full of thoughts about going to the hospital tomorrow. Maybe staying close to Guan Ciyan would bring some good luck.

But this damn guy… how could his words be so contradictory? One moment telling him to stay put, the next telling him to get out.

His mental state was overly beautiful. Being together for long might be life-threatening.

Jian Yang tossed and turned, unable to sleep. Besides going to the hospital, he also wanted to verify if Guan Ciyan was indeed his source of good luck.

The time passed midnight, and a new day in the game began.

Jian Yang tried to quiet his mind, starting to do his daily tasks. He exchanged thirty star coins and got three chances to draw cards.

As expected, he pulled a four-star card.

Two more chances.

Jian Yang’s finger hovered over the search button. After some thought, he sneakily made his way to Guan Ciyan’s room door.

“He’s injured like this today, he should be sleeping soundly, it’s fine.”

“Jian Yang, you have to be brave. Do you want to live your whole life controlled by the plot?”

“It’s okay! Worst case, I’ll just run. Guan Ciyan’s injured, he can’t outrun you.”

Every time he applied the medicine, his back itched and hurt unbearably. During these times, Guan Ciyan would lock himself in his room, and the butler couldn’t disturb him. He lay on his side on the bed in the quiet, deep night, every little touch on his nerve endings feeling especially sharp.

His attention shifted from his back to the sound of Jian Yang pacing outside, like a little dog being restricted by its owner from getting on the bed.

The door handle turned.

Guan Ciyan closed his eyes and pretended to doze off.

Jian Yang poked his head in, the room only lit by two small nightlights. “Meow meow…”

Guan Ciyan listened carefully to the sounds, hearing the meow… and felt an unexplainable urge to curse.

It was probably because the opponents he usually faced were like thousand-year-old ginseng spirits, the elite of elites, and Jian Yang’s two meows made him feel humiliated.

It felt like he had been forced to lower himself to the same ridiculous level.

He didn’t even know how to respond to Jian Yang’s meows.

“I knew he was asleep,” Jian Yang said with an air of pride.

He tiptoed to the bedside, and Guan Ciyan turned over, revealing his clean work phone.

Sure enough, a small hand lifted his finger and placed it on the phone screen.

Guan Ciyan’s heart dropped, he knew…

Swish, swish, swish—

A series of shooting star effects.

His phone unlocked without sound. Where had he heard that cheerful, stupid sound before? Oh, it was when he bumped into Jian Yang earlier and accidentally pressed his card-drawing game.

“Oh my, this little hammer is so cute.” Jian Yang’s role in the game was a prop master, collecting various tools for this episode’s story. “It’s actually a six-star!”

Guan Ciyan gritted his teeth, trying not to suddenly jump up and smack Jian Yang in the head.

It was already ridiculous enough.

“There’s one more chance to draw a card. Don’t disappoint me,” Jian Yang whispered, gently squeezing Guan Ciyan’s finger and placing it on the phone screen.

“Flowing light brocade!” Jian Yang gasped in a soft voice, “This is so beautiful, thank you!”

He was polite.

Guan Ciyan: … What kind of breed did the Jian family raise? So dumb.

His work phone was right there, with core data in the unlocked drawer. He was wasting priceless things while playing this card-drawing game.

Jian Yang’s hand moved again to touch Guan Ciyan’s finger. Guan Ciyan pretended to turn over, pressing his hand under the pillow.

“Mean,” Jian Yang muttered.

The collection of lucky cards stood in a row. The excitement passed, and Jian Yang, feeling dejected, admitted the truth—Guan Ciyan was his source of good luck.

“But I really don’t want to stay here.”

Compared to his previous surprise, his calm voice now carried a sense of helplessness, sadness, and annoyance.

Guan Ciyan, infuriated, felt his rising heart crash down heavily.

As he had expected, Jian Yang had ulterior motives and reluctantly approached him.
