Chapter 29
She swallowed.
Even Shen Wu, who was usually the most annoying, seemed friendly now.
“Daughter-in-law, where did you get this?”
Shen Wu swore, this was the first time she had seen Lu Lao Tai so gentle since she married into the Lu family. There was no anger on her face, instead, there was a bit of caution.
Xu Yin pointed outside, “By the roadside, under a tree.”
“I saw it, I thought it could be an extra dish, so I caught it.”
Lu Lao Tai closed her eyes, “Good catch, don’t catch it next time.”
Xu Yin…
Shen Wu burst out laughing.
Now that the snake was dead, Lu Lao Tai’s departed soul had returned. Hearing Shen Wu laugh, she glared at her again.
“This meat is good meat, but we don’t eat this stuff at our house.” She glanced at it, “It’s at least three or four pounds of meat, I’ll go ask if anyone wants to eat it.”
Lu Lao Tai asked Xu Yin to help her tie the snake with a rope and carry it out.
But she didn’t ask much, she had just gone out when a neighbor next door called out to her.
The neighbor next door to the Lu family, on the right was a widow. Her husband had been bitten by a bear in the mountains years ago, and his bones were never found. Now she was alone with three sons and a daughter.
On the left was a family of three generations, similar to the Lu family.
Lu Lao Tai didn’t get along with them either.
To be precise, there were few people in the village who got along well with Lu Lao Tai.
That’s right.
The two of them were haggling over the snake.
Feng Lao Tai, the neighbor on the left, said, “This snake, it’s like this, five eggs!”
“If you agree, give it to me, if not, then go find someone else.” She had just seen Lu Lao Tai’s scared look when she saw the snake in her own yard.
Grass snake, what’s so scary about it, the meat is delicious.
Lu Lao Tai was being fussy.
“I have five or six pounds of meat, five eggs!” Lu Lao Tai was furious, “You old witch Feng, stop twisting my words!”
Feng Lao Tai: “Then how many do you say?”
Lu Lao Tai: “Thirty!”
Feng Lao Tai: “Don’t be too greedy!”
…
Shen Wu listened for a while, and finally, they reached an agreement on fifteen eggs, and the two exchanged the snake for the eggs.
The snake brought Lu Lao Tai fifteen eggs. She looked at the white eggs, her heart filled with joy.
“Mother, these eggs are free, can we eat them for lunch? Chili scrambled eggs.”
As soon as Lu Lao Tai heard Shen Wu’s words, she held the eggs tightly.
But Xu Yin wanted to eat, no meat, no eggs, the noodles they ate every day weren’t even white noodles, she walked towards Lu Lao Tai and stretched out her hand, “Give me the eggs.”
“These are what I traded for…”
Xu Yin frowned slightly, and repeated, “Give me the eggs.”
Thinking about how this daughter-in-law came in with the snake, and smashed its head with a stone, Lu Lao Tai still felt a bit scared when she thought about it. Although she was reluctant to give up the eggs, she still took out eight.
“Here you go, these can be exchanged for eggs, it’s not just your snake’s credit, but also mine, you get one more.”
Xu Yin: “Ten.”
Once it was in Lu Lao Tai’s hands, it was almost like pulling out her tendons to get it back. She was reluctant.
Xu Yin’s impression on her today was too deep, even though she was reluctant, she finally took out two more eggs.
She handed them to her, “Save them.”
There were only a few eggs, so Xu Yin simply gave them all to Shen Wu, “Just scramble them all.”
Lu Lao Tai felt heartbroken, young people, they don’t know how to cherish food.
Shen Wu didn’t know what Lu Lao Tai was thinking, ten eggs was quite a lot compared to usual. Besides, they hadn’t eaten scrambled eggs before, they always boiled the eggs to maximize their value.
Besides chili scrambled eggs, Shen Wu secretly steamed two eggs for Xu Yin.
Without a steamer, her cooking skills weren’t that great, so the eggs weren’t as smooth, but in this era, it was already a delicacy.
“I didn’t expect that one day, I would be so miserable.” Xu Yin couldn’t help but sigh as she ate the steamed eggs.
Shen Wu looked at her and said, “Sell that thing, and our lives will be better.”
“I want to eat rice.”
“Me too.”
Everyone came home for lunch. Seeing the yellow eggs and green chilies, everyone was shocked.
Lu Pan’er was surprised, “Third aunt, is there something special happening at our house today?”
Shen Wu glared at Xu Yin with a cold face.
Xu Yin said, “We found a snake and traded it for eggs.”
Her story was so simple, she only said this because Lu Pan’er wasn’t annoying.
Lu Lao Tai listened, but this didn’t show her bravery, so she told her own story, “You didn’t see that snake, it was at least seven or eight pounds big, it was flying towards me, baring its fangs and claws…”
…
“Feng Lao Tai really got a bargain!”
She told the story vividly, spitting everywhere. Shen Wu quickly scooped some eggs into her bowl, held the bowl and moved away to eat. The snake’s weight had almost doubled in a short time.
The snake was hard to stew. After Shen Wu finished eating, she was still able to smell the scent of the snake being stewed next door while reading in the afternoon. The smell drifted over, it was an indescribable smell, a mix of fragrance and fishy smell.
Shen Wu didn’t like it.
But there were some who liked it. While the snake was being stewed, many passersby who were working had stopped by Feng Lao Tai’s house.
Learning that she had caught a four or five pound snake, everyone exclaimed about her good luck.
Feng Lao Tai was proud, “It’s Lu’s wife, she doesn’t know how to eat! This snake meat is good, it’s very nourishing, it’s like dragon meat…”
Fortunately, everyone in the village had things to do, and Feng Lao Tai wouldn’t invite anyone to eat. Everyone chatted for a while and then left.
Shen Wu read for the afternoon, and when she went to the toilet, she discussed the matter of selling the wild ginseng with Xu Yin.
At night.
No transportation.
There was also a man around, the possibility of them silently selling the wild ginseng was slim.
In the end, the two decided.
To talk to Lu Xuan and Lu Ye.
They ate the eggs together at noon, and dinner was no different from usual, still corncob porridge, plus green beans from their yard, a cold cucumber salad, and the two-in-one flour steamed buns weren’t enough to fill them up.
But tonight there was an important task, Shen Wu had something on her mind, and she didn’t care about Lu Lao Tai being stingy with her food.
Lu Lao Tai was muttering about her unusual behavior.
Lu Xuan took a shower and went into the room. Seeing his wife’s eyes shining brightly at him, his heart softened.
At this moment, he felt a sense of belonging.
“What are you looking at me for?” Lu Xuan coughed, “Are you feeling uncomfortable anywhere today?”
Shen Wu’s mind was full of selling the wild ginseng to eat rice, “I’m fine now.”
“Third brother, I want to discuss something with you.” She said, pulling Lu Xuan to sit down.
Lu Xuan looked at her fair skin. She had been plain for a whole night, and now, he felt full of energy. He put his arm around her, “We’ll talk about it later.”
His big hand rested on her waist.
His palm was a little rough, rubbing against her skin, Shen Wu was a bit uncomfortable, but she still held his hand, leaning close to his ear…
