Chapter 48: Randomly Scaring Three Timid Imperials to Death
The Alphas fell silent for a long moment, the atmosphere heavy and strange.
Ji Laili figured his expression just now must have been terrible—otherwise, why had everyone suddenly gone quiet?
Was he really that scary?
No way.
He curved his eyes into a smile, deliberately breaking the suffocating silence.
“Hey, hey, did I actually scare you guys? Am I really that terrifying when I don’t smile?”
His grin was bright, his brows arched. “Does this count as a death glare?”
The Alphas laughed dryly. Ji Laili scratched his head in frustration. “Guess I really am scary, huh.”
They were usually so arrogant—blowing things up, setting things on fire at a whim.
But now? Even goading them didn’t get a rise out of them. How annoying.
With a loud bang, Lei Po raised a leg and kicked the nearby horizontal bar with his military boot, quirking an eyebrow.
“You think that was enough to scare me? Laili, you need more practice.”
“Easy for you to say.”
Zhai Yifei’s gaze was cool. “Then why didn’t you say anything earlier?”
Lei Po remained at ease, completely unbothered. “Can’t I just take a moment to appreciate this guy’s Alpha side?”
“You sure had a lot to say about me, but I didn’t hear you speaking up either.”
Zhai Yifei couldn’t be bothered to argue with him. He turned his gaze to Ji Laili instead. “I just didn’t expect this side of you.”
He thought for a moment, then smiled faintly. “I suppose it’s… contrast?”
Ji Laili chuckled at that, his little canine teeth showing. “Then maybe I should smile more often. And when I fight someone, I just won’t smile—scare them to death instead?”
Lei Po burst out laughing. “You think you’re Instructor Aiger?”
“Oh? Instructor Aiger is scary?”
“Isn’t he?” Lei Po answered without a second thought. “A 1.9-meter-tall, buzz-cut Alpha—when he’s not smiling, that scar on his eyelid makes him look like a freaking demon.”
“Actually, he’s terrifying even when he does smile. Like he’s ready to start a massacre at any moment.”
Lei Po clicked his tongue. “I bet if we let the instructor loose, he could randomly scare at least three timid Imperials to death.”
“Po-ge, do you remember last time you said the instructor was really handsome?”
Ji Laili suddenly spoke, his left eye tilting playfully in a certain direction as he winked. “Be honest—he’s actually your idol, isn’t he?”
“What kind of joke is that?” Lei Po immediately denied it.
The Alpha with his hair tied up in a small ponytail stuffed his hands into his pockets, looking smug and full of confidence, like “I have no rivals”.
“He’s way too arrogant. I get annoyed just looking at people who are more arrogant than me.”
“How could he be my idol? My idol is myself—Lei Po. Got it?”
After shamelessly hyping himself up, Lei Po even added a final remark. “Instructor Aiger is basically a fire-breathing dragon.”
Ji Laili opened his mouth to say something, but before he could, Zhai Yifei pulled him back and gave him a calm, knowing smile.
…Forget it. Ji Laili decided to stay silent.
But that expression seemed to give Lei Po the wrong idea. He dragged out his words, trying to console him:
“No need to be too disappointed, Laili. If you really want to scare people, you should learn from Instructor Aiger.”
“You mean learn just how scary he is?”
A deep, cold voice came from behind them, like a brewing storm barely being restrained.
“Exactly! Just follow Instructor Aig—”
Lei Po’s words cut off abruptly. His expression froze as realization dawned. His spine went rigid.
His carefully maintained “cocky rebel” persona shattered instantly.
Before he could even turn around, he caught sight of Zhai Yifei’s expression—calm, amused, and completely unbothered, with a hint of schadenfreude.
A deep sense of doom settled over Lei Po. Seeking confirmation, he glanced at Ji Laili—
—Only to be met with a pitiful, puppy-like look of sympathy.
At that moment, Lei Po’s heart turned to ash.
And right on cue, the devil behind him let out a slow, menacing chuckle. “Then you’d better learn from me properly.”
Stiffly, Lei Po turned his head—only to see Instructor Aiger standing right there. Beside him was Shen Yu.
“Instructor…” The Alpha tried to salvage the situation. “Actually, you’re my idol.”
Aiger: “…?”
Crap, I messed up. Lei Po tried to fix it again, but before he could say another word, he was met with a chilling, ice-cold glare.
From Shen Yu.
“…?”
What the hell? What did I do to him this time?
He didn’t have time to figure it out.
Aiger, now fully enraged, wasn’t in the mood to listen to any excuses. He grabbed Lei Po by the collar and dragged him off with a sinister smirk.
“Boss!”
Lei Po’s underlings cried out in alarm.
Aiger’s sharp gaze swept over them, and the group immediately stuffed their hands into their pockets and looked up at the sky, pretending none of this had anything to do with them.
Lei Po was so pissed he wished he could stab them all with his eyes.
Aiger sneered. “You’ve all gotten so sloppy. What, planning to scare the Imperials to death just by showing your faces? If you’re not training hard enough to drop dead, none of you are leaving this place!”
The recruits: “……”
They hadn’t even started, and yet they already felt like they were dying.
—
The assistant instructors got thoroughly chewed out by an infuriated Aiger. Looking like a wrathful beast, he truly lived up to his “fire-breathing dragon” reputation.
The Alphas, now covered in dust and full of frustration, immediately took it out on the new recruits during training.
At times like this, Ji Laili was thankful to have Shen Yu giving him private tutoring.
But…
Little Butterfly didn’t seem happy again.
On the surface, he looked the same, and his attitude toward Ji Laili hadn’t changed.
However—
Ji Laili was certain he hadn’t noticed—his eyes were red.
He looked exactly like someone who was feeling terrible, on the verge of crying, but was stubbornly holding back the tears.
And that faint flush on his pale cheeks completely gave him away.
Of course, Ji Laili wouldn’t call him out on it—but he also wouldn’t just let him stay sad.
So, during training, he deliberately made a small mistake, almost getting hit by Shen Yu. When Shen Yu’s face showed a brief flicker of panic and he hurried over to check on him, Ji Laili let out a small sigh.
Shen Yu froze for a second, his voice unconsciously carrying a trace of worry.
“Where does it hurt?”
Then, hesitantly, almost awkwardly, he pressed his lips together.
“…Sorry.”
He didn’t seem used to apologizing, and it showed.
Shen Yu hadn’t expected to hurt Ji Laili. Even during training, he had always controlled his strength well—this had never happened before.
A surge of anxiety gripped his heart. Before Ji Laili could say anything, Shen Yu had already lost his patience and grabbed his hand, ready to take him away.
Ji Laili took two steps before stopping in place. “What’s wrong?”
Their tugging and pulling left the surrounding Alphas completely stunned.
Someone—anyone—please tell them that the person holding an Alpha’s hand was really Shen Yu?
The new recruits were still in training, watching carefully. But Eugene, who had long suspected something unusual between the two, completely ignored everything else and openly observed them.
However, things didn’t seem quite as he had imagined.
A somewhat unclear conversation drifted over.
“What’s wrong?”
“We’re going to the medical ward.”
Eugene froze. “The medical ward? What for?”
The recruits under his command lost all discipline, following his lead as they curiously observed the two.
After hearing the exchange, one of them couldn’t help but blurt out, “What else? Shen Yu must really hate Alphas—hates them so much he sent one straight to the medical ward!”
