Chapter 110: This Guy Is Definitely an Undercover Agent!
The Imperial higher-ups believed that this plan was absolutely correct.
Having the Federation’s golden boy betray them and switch to the Empire would certainly be an entertaining sight.
Everything was progressing smoothly.
With the help of their secret operatives, Shen Yu had been injected with the transformation serum. The Empire had also sent numerous undercover agents to infiltrate the Federation, waiting for the perfect moment to push Shen Yu to his breaking point and force his defection.
At the same time, they were actively searching for more outstanding Alpha candidates to use as test subjects.
Until recently, unexpected incidents had started occurring frequently.
“The experiment’s progress has already been affected! Tell me, is it really that difficult to capture a single Alpha?”
Garna exhaled a puff of smoke irritably. “If you can’t find Alphas from the Federation’s military academy, then follow the usual method—grab some other Alphas instead!”
“As long as we meet the target quota, that’s all that matters. If we delay the project, can you afford to take responsibility?”
A black-haired Omega woman looked displeased. “Do you think it’s that easy? This isn’t the early phase of the experiment anymore.”
“I told you, we need Alphas from the Federation’s military academy!”
Garna snapped, “Then go catch them yourself! Do whatever you want with them once you’ve got them!”
“I already said we could use the Alphas that returned from undercover missions, but you refused. And now you’re insisting on getting military academy Alphas instead? If the higher-ups hold us accountable, you better not drag me down with you!”
“You actually suggested using those undercover Alphas who barely made it out alive? How could you even say that?”
Wen Qiushui gritted her teeth and cursed. “Have you forgotten that they are Imperial citizens now?”
“A piece of trash who’d betray their own kind—you should be the one volunteering as a test subject!”
Garna shot her a cold glare, his Alpha pheromones expanding outward, filling the space with a suffocating tobacco scent aimed directly at the Omega.
“Wen Qiushui! You’d better shut up and focus on your damn research. Don’t test my patience.”
The nauseating scent engulfed her. Wen Qiushui clenched her jaw, her body trembling under the crushing weight of his pheromones, but she refused to back down.
Sweat beaded down her delicate face as she pushed back her damp black hair and sneered, “And what if I do provoke you?”
“This experiment can’t continue without me, can it? Do you even dare lay a hand on me?”
Garna crushed his cigarette in frustration, letting the ashes scatter onto the pristine white floor.
The mix of burnt tobacco filled the air, indistinguishable in its stench.
As they stared each other down, an Alpha approached cautiously. “Lord Garna, some Alphas have arrived at the base. I checked their ID—they were previously undercover agents at the Federation’s military academy.”
“More undercover agents?” Garna was sick of hearing that term. He instinctively reached for another cigarette but remembered he had already crushed the last one.
His lips curled into a sharp, almost bloodthirsty grin. “There sure have been a lot of ‘escaped’ agents lately. What do you think—could one of them be a Federation spy planted among them?”
No one dared to respond. They didn’t want to provoke this lunatic.
Garna chuckled to himself. “Interesting. A spy hiding among spies.”
“Let’s see if they can stay hidden.”
His eyes locked onto Wen Qiushui, laced with a sinister warning. “If we capture any Alphas, they’ll be used as test subjects. This time, I doubt our esteemed researcher will object, will she?”
Wen Qiushui saw the threat in his eyes. She took out a tissue, wiped the sweat from her forehead, and cast him a look of sheer disdain.
“Of course not.”
“You think I don’t want to do my job properly?”
Garna scoffed in response, his expression full of mockery.
“Lead the way. Let’s see these ‘escaped’ undercover agents.”
“Y-yes, sir!”
The Alpha who delivered the report quickly stepped forward to guide them.
As they walked, Garna asked, “Have the genetic tests been done?”
“Yes, sir. The machines confirmed they passed.”
“Sir, there shouldn’t be any spies among them.” The Alpha, fearing Garna’s suspicion, quickly added, “I personally oversaw the entire process!”
“Idiot. Do you think the Federation doesn’t have ways to bypass our testing?”
Garna didn’t believe for a second that the Federation lacked countermeasures. After all, the Empire had used similar tactics when infiltrating the Federation.
Over the past few days, a total of eight undercover agents had managed to ‘escape’ and return to the base.
If Wen Qiushui didn’t have partial authority over this facility, Garna would’ve already put a bullet through their heads the moment they arrived.
What use were undercover agents who failed their mission?
Completely worthless.
The Alpha who had been scolded wilted a little but suddenly remembered something and eagerly tried to redeem himself.
“Oh, right! Lord Garna, the governor of Nagano Star also sent a few ‘talents’ over this time. Would you like to take a look and see if any of them catch your interest?”
As he spoke, Garna raised his hand, pressing his fingertips against a scanner. The silver-white doors slid open with a mechanical hiss.
The words landed squarely in the ears of those inside.
What the hell?
They’re recruiting people, and now they’re playing the ‘unspoken rules’ game too?
Ji Laili had been on high alert this whole time. But upon hearing that sentence, he nearly lost control of his expression.
Then, his mind latched onto a crucial detail—“Sent by the governor of Nagano Star.”
As expected, the entire planet had nearly fallen into the hands of the Empire.
“Is it this one?”
A sharp, scrutinizing gaze suddenly fell upon him. Ji Laili lifted his head, his light brown curls bouncing slightly as he flashed a bright, cheerful smile.
Garna took one look at him and immediately grimaced in disgust.
“This goofy-looking curly-haired brat?”
“You’re calling this a ‘talent’? What is he, a court jester?”
Ji Laili: …?
He widened his eyes—wasn’t this outright discrimination?!
A quiet chuckle came from beside him. It was Eugene. When Ji Laili met his gaze, Eugene scoffed and turned his head away in disdain.
“……”
Come on, we’re on the same side here! What good does it do you to laugh at me?
The Federation Military Academy had arranged undercover identities for them, but they couldn’t all rely on those identities alone.
They had learned that the Nagano Star base was secretly recruiting “talents” to do their dirty work—essentially, poaching people from the Federation.
Poaching enemy talent was fun, and the Empire was not only developing its forces in secret but also trying to lure in some of its enemies.
Of course, this recruitment came with conditions. Aside from possessing exceptional abilities, the most important requirement was hating the Federation.
Ji Laili, Lei Po, and Eugene were given the identities of people secretly recruited by the Empire.
Meanwhile, Zhai Yifei and Shen Yu were disguised as former undercover agents who had “escaped” back to the Empire.
Zhai Yifei and Shen Yu were well-known within the Federation, so their faces had already been documented in official records. For safety reasons, the Federation had them pose as defectors, using disguises to alter their appearances.
Ji Laili and the other two, however, used their real faces.
But seriously—who would’ve thought that Garna discriminated against people with curly hair?!
The Alpha who first spoke seemed to hesitate. “Lord Garna, should I go back and confirm again…?”
No way—I can’t give you guys a chance to double-check my fake identity!
Ji Laili made a snap decision. Understanding the importance of office politics, he immediately redirected the conflict toward the Alpha instead.
The curly-haired young man tilted his head, his crescent-shaped eyes filled with confusion. He let out a soft “hmm” and said,
“You need to double-check something this simple?”
“I thought all the necessary paperwork was already prepared before we were allowed to join the base.”
Ji Laili cast a disapproving glance at the Alpha. “Bro, you’re really slacking off at work, huh?”
The Alpha, who had been carefully doing his job, terrified of making one wrong move and getting killed by his superior: …?!
He turned to Garna in shock, only to meet his boss’s cold, piercing gaze.
Slander! This is slander!
Lord Garna, I swear—this guy is definitely an undercover agent!
