The undercover squad successfully survived in the base. Aside from Eugene and the others’ dissatisfaction with their bathroom duty, things were progressing in a good direction.
Ji Laili followed Laurie closely, memorizing the base’s general layout and sketching it out later that day. He found an opportunity to show it to his teammates.
Laurie was deeply moved to have someone share the workload, which significantly increased his trust in Ji Laili—unintentionally giving him more authority.
Moreover, Ji Laili was warm and friendly to everyone. According to a jealous Lei Po:
“If someone didn’t know better, they’d think you came here just to find new big brothers.”
After a few days, practically everyone in the base had become Ji Laili’s ‘bro.’
For men, he called them bro.
For women, it was sister.
Regarding this, Zhai Yifei only commented, “…Stop being ridiculous.”
“Ridiculous? I’m strongly condemning Ji Laili! He actually calls Imperial soldiers bro! Unforgivable!” Lei Po ranted.
“Did he ever consider my feelings when calling those people bro? I’m supposed to be the big brother here, but now I suddenly have a bunch of Imperial underlings.”
Lei Po sulked—did his big bro status even mean anything anymore? Ji Laili was just a flirtatious Alpha!
Zhai Yifei’s expression turned subtle.
Never thought you’d get jealous over something this trivial.
In the end, it was Eugene who shut down Lei Po’s jealousy. Madame 37 was utterly unimpressed.
“What’s your deal? What right do you even have to be jealous?”
“Even Shen Yu hasn’t said anything.”
Do you think it’s your place to complain?
Lei Po had a sudden revelation—right! Knowing Shen Yu’s insane possessiveness, he should be the most jealous one right now!
Why am I even worrying? So what if Ji Laili keeps calling people bro?
It’s all just for show. With me, he’s serious.
The moment Lei Po realized someone else was even more concerned than him, he immediately felt better. He let it go and even pretended to be generous.
“It’s just for the mission. Shen Yu will understand.”
Ji Laili: “…”
He looked at Lei Po in pure disgust.
Childish. So childish.
Brother Po was getting more immature by the day. Good thing both he and Little Butterfly were here—otherwise, Instructor Aiger wouldn’t be able to sleep at night.
Ji Laili proudly praised himself, making sure to include Shen Yu in his compliments.
“Are you running away?”
“Don’t forget, the Empire is your only home.”
“Your heart, your body—the Empire will claim them both. I’d love to see the expressions of the Federation dogs when they find out. It will be spectacular.”
Ji Laili: “……”
Alright, bro.
Fine. I’ll train properly.
He had thought being an undercover agent in the Empire wouldn’t give him chances to improve his skills. Who could have expected Garna to personally train him?
Too passionate—impossible to refuse.
Life as a spy was surprisingly fulfilling. After training, Ji Laili would take over some of Laurie’s work, secretly gather key intelligence, and even help his teammates get ahead in the security force.
Thanks to his extensive connections, he eventually managed to wander near the lab.
At first, the researchers viewed him with suspicion. But after a few days, Ji Laili had become an unofficial staff member.
Of course, it helped that he showed zero interest in the lab’s work.
He was waiting for Lance.
From Laurie, he learned about the near fight between them. The lab researchers were terrified that the two would actually start a brawl.
After all, Lance was a precious test subject.
The Beta researcher had said this with such arrogant indifference—like Lance wasn’t even a living person.
If it weren’t for Lance’s current status, these people wouldn’t hesitate to do something terrible…
Ji Laili smiled while chatting with them, but there was no warmth in his eyes.
Many Alphas had fallen victim here.
Maybe it wasn’t just Alphas.
He couldn’t change the past, but the future—he would fight with everything to stop it.
“Ji Laili, bear with it. At least go easy on him. Once the experiment is over, everything will be fine.”
Ji Laili’s smile widened.
“Yeah… once the experiment is over, everything will be fine.”
Just then, Shen Yu walked out from inside. The researchers, who had been speaking freely, immediately fell silent. They gave Ji Laili a brief nod before walking away, coldly ignoring Shen Yu as they entered the lab.
On the way back, the two of them didn’t speak much.
Once inside a more hidden room, Ji Laili skillfully took down the curtains and blocked the gaps around the door.
Only then did he reach for Shen Yu’s shirt buttons.
Shen Yu caught his hand, his voice low.
“Wait a moment.”
“What’s wrong?”
Ji Laili didn’t move his hand away, hesitating.
“Did I hurt you?”
“No…” Shen Yu whispered. “You don’t have to take it off.”
“Why?”
Ji Laili’s expression turned serious. Without hesitation, he pulled open Shen Yu’s collar, already prepared for the worst.
Beneath the fabric, Shen Yu’s neck was long and fair—without the scars Ji Laili had feared.
His tense expression froze. He looked at Shen Yu, puzzled.
“Same as before. They just took a little blood.” Shen Yu smiled, reassuring him.
Ji Laili couldn’t help but overthink.
What if they did something else?
What if they hid the wounds where he couldn’t see them?
He couldn’t stop himself from glancing at Shen Yu’s clothes beneath his collar.
Then he quickly looked away, biting down hard.
Damn susceptibility period.
“Senior, are you lying to me? Did they do something else to you? Even if it’s just blood tests—”
Ji Laili frowned. “Isn’t it too frequent?”
Seeing how worried he was, Shen Yu simply leaned closer.
“Want to bite?”
“Huh?” Ji Laili was caught off guard.
Shen Yu took his hand and placed it on his neck.
“Instead of worrying about me, shouldn’t you pay more attention to yourself?”
“Aren’t you having a hard time holding back lately?”
Here, they didn’t dare to do much.
Shen Yu had been taken to the lab, and for the first few days, all they did was draw his blood. Because of that, Ji Laili didn’t dare to bite him, afraid it would make Shen Yu uncomfortable.
Hearing Shen Yu’s words, all of his strange behavior suddenly made sense. Ji Laili let out a breath of relief.
“Seriously, you scared me for a moment.”
He leaned in and gave Shen Yu a quick bite—so light that it didn’t even leave a mark. Then he pulled away, his eyes curving into a smile.
“There, all done. Problem solved.”
In a situation like this, things like susceptibility periods were the least of his concerns. Since Shen Yu was fine, Ji Laili’s focus shifted back to the lab.
“There are still some Alphas inside who are being used as test subjects. Right now, I don’t have access to their data, but they could be a breakthrough point.”
“They’ve been used as test subjects for quite some time.”
Ji Laili immediately understood.
“If we rescue them, it’ll definitely slow down the progress of the experiments!”
“No…” Shen Yu said.
“I mean, we kill them.”
