Having done this once before, everyone was much more adept the second time around, their movements growing increasingly swift.
Watching them, Ji Laili could only sigh—the Empire is really something. If you say they’re good, well, they’re committing all sorts of inhumane acts. If you say they’re bad, they’re also training talents for their enemies!
Ah, this is so difficult.
So if war truly breaks out, it’s best to just take them out quickly with one strike—less pain for everyone.
After leaving the lab, the group didn’t immediately disband but instead gathered to discuss their next steps.
Having gained some understanding of the lab and the Alphas being used as test subjects, they decided after some deliberation to find a way to contact the Federation.
When the time came, they would create chaos, collaborate with the Federation from within and without, and help get people out.
“The lab is the most important part of the base. If we create a diversion, we can get closer to it.”
“What do you think, Senior Shen?”
Shen Yu nodded. “That works.”
Seeing that he had no objections, Zhai Yifei continued, “Eugene and I will handle support and try to keep the security forces occupied. Lei Po will be in charge of coordinating with Instructor Aiger.”
“As for contacting the Federation Military Academy…” Zhai Yifei smiled lightly. “Laili?”
Ji Laili gave an OK sign, lips curving into a grin. “Don’t worry, I’ll get through to Instructor Aiger.”
With the plan set, the team members began to disperse. Ji Laili, however, lingered and turned to Shen Yu with a playful gaze.
“Senior, I have a secret to tell you.”
“Hm?” Shen Yu’s attention was immediately drawn back from thoughts of the lab. He looked at Ji Laili in confusion. “What secret?”
“It’s the secret you didn’t want me to know, so you kept it hidden with someone else—but I found out, and now I want to tell you the secret about this secret.”
Ji Laili’s twisting words made Shen Yu’s thoughts spin. But before Shen Yu could react, Ji Laili’s smile faded, and he pulled out a bottle of medicine.
His eyes were serious. “Take off your shirt.”
“This time, you’re not hiding it from me!”
Inside the laboratory, researchers in white coats moved around, first scanning their fingerprints before glancing at the silver cages holding the test subjects.
After admiring the angry, vicious, and wary glares of the captives for a moment, one of the researchers leisurely went to make an iced coffee.
“You’re just as much of a freak as ever,” his colleague teased. “Do you seriously need to look at them before you can enjoy your meal?”
The Beta researcher chuckled, sipping his coffee. “They make such a great side dish.”
He looked excited. “Every time I see those test subjects snarling like that, it just reminds me of how good my life is now.”
“Ah, these poor bastards—unfortunate enough to become the stepping stones for my promotion.”
The Beta took another sip of coffee and sighed pretentiously. “I really hope they don’t hate me too much. They should at least try to understand—this is an important project, after all.”
His colleague laughed heartily. “A research so grand it will go down in interstellar history—of course these dumb Alphas wouldn’t understand.”
He glanced arrogantly at the figures trapped in the silver cages.
“You should be grateful. We’re giving you a chance to be remembered by history.”
The icy stares from the cages made him click his tongue in annoyance. But before he could say more, he caught a glimpse of Wen Qiushui, standing silently on the other side, observing them with cold eyes.
“Lord Wen, you’re here?”
“What’s today’s test?”
The Beta researcher’s eyes lit up. “Are we doing electric shock testing again?”
Another researcher chimed in, “No, that’s getting boring. Let’s try something new.”
“What about water drips? There’s an old saying—‘dripping water wears through stone’. I’m curious just how hard these Alpha skulls really are.”
“Hm, interesting.”
“Today is a blood draw.” Wen Qiushui’s voice cut through their excited discussion.
She walked past the surprised and immediately displeased Beta researchers toward the equipment table, methodically organizing the instruments.
With precise movements, she put on white gloves, picked up a clipboard, and meticulously inspected each piece of testing equipment for damage.
Once confirmed intact, she marked each corresponding section in her records with a checkmark.
“Lord Wen, we’re not conducting any tests?”
“We have more than enough blood samples already. We should keep moving forward. Running a few more tests wouldn’t hurt.”
“Right, Lord Garna already has concerns about our progress. If we don’t conduct more—”
Snap.
The clipboard shut with a crisp sound, silencing the talking Beta researchers. Wen Qiushui’s voice was ice-cold.
“In this lab, I am the one in charge.”
Her sharp gaze swept across the dissatisfied but powerless researchers, and she smirked slightly.
“This so-called ‘great experiment’—the one that will supposedly be written into interstellar history—the first name on it will be mine.”
Her voice was light, almost floating on air, as if it couldn’t be grasped.
“Without me, you are nothing.”
The Beta researchers were furious but dared not speak.
Wen Qiushui cast them a mocking glance, then indifferently turned back to her records, flipping the clipboard open once more.
“Blood draw.”
“And one more thing—stop bringing up Garna in my lab. Otherwise, get out.”
No matter how displeased they were, they could only shut their mouths. Even the highest-ranking researcher beneath Wen Qiushui had no choice but to comply.
Because the very first generation of transformation serums had been developed by Wen Qiushui herself.
She was the core of this project.
As the tense atmosphere thickened, the sound of boots clicking against the floor drew everyone’s attention.
Shen Yu—wearing Lance’s face—strolled in casually.
“What’s going on here?”
“The Empire pays you, and this is how you spend your time? Chatting?”
The Alpha’s gaze was cold and condescending. His next words made the researchers boil with anger.
“A bunch of useless trash.”
“You—!”
As soon as Lance appeared, the Beta researchers became even angrier, their furious gazes practically burning holes through him.
Wen Qiushui glanced at Lance, her eyes sweeping over him once before she reached out and brushed her fingertips over a row of vials—suddenly, she paused.
“One vial of compound X236 is missing.”
The researcher standing beside her, who had been reluctantly forced to check the equipment with her, held back his frustration and replied dismissively,
“That’s impossible. We check every day.”
“There’s no way one is missing. You must have remembered wrong, Lord Wen.”
“Oh? Is that so?”
Wen Qiushui responded lightly. The Beta researcher assumed the topic had been dropped and casually skimmed over the equipment before marking a check on the list.
Then, he heard her ask:
“How many vials are there in total for compounds starting with ‘X’?”
The Beta researcher’s face froze—how the hell was he supposed to know that?!
This crazy Omega Wen Qiushui even memorized something like that? What a research lunatic!
Cursing her inwardly, he stammered, unable to come up with an answer, and vaguely threw out a number.
Wen Qiushui gave him a brief glance. The Beta stiffened, expecting her to lash out, but instead, she nonchalantly moved on—as if she had only asked the question to mess with him.
“Continue the inspection. If I catch you marking things carelessly, I’ll make sure your head disappears just as easily.”
Without bothering to look at the man’s spectacularly horrified expression, Wen Qiushui called out to Lance.
Once the young man caught up, she suddenly, without warning, asked—
“Are you an Omega?”
