Seeing customers approach, Gu Yingying quickly stood up, looking at the handsome couple in front of her. The girl speaking was strikingly beautiful with a pair of almond-shaped eyes that seemed to smile playfully. The man beside her had a gentle, jade-like demeanor, gazing at his girlfriend with a warm, tolerant smile.
“I… I can’t predict love matches, I’m sorry.” Gu Yingying said nervously.
She had never done fortune-telling before and was a little anxious. But she remembered what her senior had told her: the most elusive thing in the world was the relationship between a man and a woman, and fate was even more mysterious. It shouldn’t be something she meddled with.
She never intended to predict someone’s love life, and she didn’t dare to.
Unfortunately, the couple seemed to lose interest immediately upon hearing her words. The girl, still holding her boyfriend, walked away, leaving Gu Yingying standing there dejectedly. She felt like earning money was far more difficult than she had imagined.
Sitting back down on the bench, Bastet meowed softly. Gu Yingying, feeling down, hugged him.
“Bastet, am I useless? If it were my senior, he would definitely make money, right?”
Having lived under her senior’s protection all this time, Gu Yingying suddenly felt lost in this strange new world. Holding Bastet close, she felt overwhelmed and a little on the verge of tears.
Bastet couldn’t stand seeing her like this. He had been with Gu Yingying for five hundred years, and she was still so fragile, pampered by that man and unable to do anything herself. Infuriated by the thought, Bastet swiped at her with his claws. Gu Yingying didn’t react in time, and the claw left a red scratch on her hand. Fortunately, it didn’t break the skin, just leaving a faint redness.
The pain instantly wiped away Gu Yingying’s feeling of grievance. When she looked down at Bastet in her arms, she saw his deep blue eyes full of displeasure, almost as if accusing her of being weak.
“Bastet, I’m sorry, I shouldn’t be this weak. Please don’t be mad, okay?”
She softly rubbed Bastet’s little black paw, knowing that only when Bastet was upset would he act like this. Her light brown eyes were filled with sincere apology. After all, when her senior wasn’t around, she had always managed on her own.
Bastet sighed in resignation and allowed her to pet his paw, signaling that he had forgiven her.
However, Gu Yingying quickly realized that trying to make money this way was definitely not going to work.
“Meow~ Meow meow~~”
Bastet made a soft, almost delicate sound, curling up in Gu Yingying’s arms. Passersby occasionally glanced their way, and at the same time, any stray cats within a kilometer of the shopping street could hear the call from Bastet, the cat spirit.
This was a unique ability of the cat spirits. As long as Bastet wished it, his call could summon countless stray cats to his side.
Not long after, a plump, silly orange cat came running toward them. It trotted up to Gu Yingying’s feet, rubbing against her legs in a playful, affectionate manner, looking utterly adorable.
Gu Yingying, instantly smitten, let go of Bastet and reached out to pet the fat, fluffy orange cat. She couldn’t help but recall the memes she had seen before her time-traveling where they joked that “nine out of ten orange cats are fat, and the last one is exceptionally fat!” Sure enough, it was irresistibly soft and cute.
The arrival of one orange cat wasn’t much of a surprise, but what happened next at the coffee shop across from the bench where Gu Yingying was sitting truly amazed the customers there.
In just over ten minutes, the area around the bench was completely filled with cats. They seemed to be all stray cats from the nearby area, and there were various types: cute, plump orange cats, pristine white cats with mismatched eyes, tortoiseshell cats with intricate patterns, and some mixed-breed tabby cats. All these cats gathered around Gu Yingying, sitting in a neat line, behaving so obediently it was almost unbelievable.
People walking by started to gather around, and it dawned on Gu Yingying that this was Bastet helping her make money. Following his instructions, she quickly scribbled four words on her hardbound notebook: “Cat Talent Show.”
A woman from the crowd spoke up. “Little girl, these cats are so well-behaved. Did you adopt them all? They look like strays…”
“Wow! Look at how cute these cats are! Mom, they’re sitting in a line!”
In a modern urban setting, people couldn’t resist the charm of cute animals like cats, especially when there were over twenty cats all sitting obediently in a row. The sight drew in more and more onlookers.
Bastet, seeing the growing crowd, finally lifted his head proudly. With an air of superiority, he leaped out of Gu Yingying’s arms and landed among the other cats. The wild cats gathered around him in a circle, and the large black cat seemed like the leader of the group, commanding the attention of everyone around. People were amazed and began pulling out their phones to take pictures.
“Today, I’m going to show you all some of my cats’ talents. I hope you enjoy the performance.” Gu Yingying said, realizing that running a cat café would likely be more popular than pretending to be a fortune teller. She quickly stood up, introduced Bastet, and made a gesture with her hand, mimicking the shape of a gun.
“Bastet!”
With a single call of his name, Bastet looked over impatiently. Gu Yingying, using her finger to mimic a gun, pointed it directly at him.
“Bang!!!”
She made a sound mimicking a gunshot, and what happened next stunned the onlookers. The black cat, upon hearing the sound, immediately collapsed onto the ground. To everyone’s astonishment, the other cats surrounding him also seemed to have been hit, and they all fell to the ground as well. Within seconds, every cat had toppled over, forming a pile of cat-shaped “pancakes,” causing the crowd to burst into laughter.
