Chapter 8
Lu Yuqing returned to her office with a belly full of anger.
Just five minutes ago, although Jiang Mu had informed her of their relationship, she turned around and asked, “Doctor Lu, we agreed not to pry into each other’s privacy and not interfere with each other’s lives, what are you doing?”
Lu Yuqing argued, “Can’t I gossip about colleagues?”
“You can ask Doctor Tang directly.”
Lu Yuqing continued to be stubborn, “She’s busy, she doesn’t have time.” After saying that, she left on the pretext of something else.
Unbeknownst to her, Jiang Mu saw her asking questions in a text message last night and then grilling her this morning, so she thought of teasing her and reminding her not to forget their agreement and not to cross the line.
Who cares? Lu Yuqing muttered. One second she opened her computer in front of her, the next second the phone rang, “Doctor Lu, prepare for emergency surgery.”
“Where? What happened?” Lu Yuqing had already stood up and was walking out.
“Car accident, external injury, traumatic cardiac arrest 10 minutes ago, the emergency department saved him, come to the emergency room first, bed four.”
“Okay.”
When Lu Yuqing arrived at the emergency room, there were six or seven doctors around the bed. Lin Ye and the other two resident physicians’ white coats and shoes were stained with blood, Tang Feiwai was even worse, when she was decompressing the patient’s chest cavity, the patient directly sprayed her face with blood.
The chief of surgery standing on the left side of the bed was in a dilemma, “Director Lin, this patient’s vital signs are unstable, we can’t push him into the operating room. Also, although Doctor Tang connected a small respirator, but pushing him to do a CT scan, I’m afraid he’ll die on the way.”
“Where’s Doctor Lu?” Lin Ye turned to the resident physician beside her.
Lu Yuqing stepped forward, “I’m here.”
“You assess him.” Professional matters are left to professionals, the person who knows the patient’s condition best is often the anesthesiologist. They will do their best to stabilize the patient’s vital signs during massive bleeding rescue or surgical operations, striving to create valuable time for the rescue doctors and surgeons, commonly known as – saving lives.
Lu Yuqing checked the patient’s medical records and observed his condition. The steel bar that pierced his body remained inside, blood continued to gush out, staying in the emergency room could lead to another ventricular fibrillation at any time, followed by cardiac arrest; if they took a gamble and did a CT scan, then removed the steel bar through surgery, there might be a glimmer of hope. After thinking for a moment, she said, “Give him fluids and blood, push him to the CT room first.”
Since the anesthesiologist had spoken, the chief of surgery also nodded, “Okay, I’ll go back and make arrangements first.”
Lin Ye asked someone to call the family in and explained to them the patient’s condition and how they would proceed.
The patient’s wife was still immersed in grief, muttering, “Doctor, he was just going to send his daughter’s exercise book, how could he… Please save him, save him…”
Lin Ye explained, “Listen to me, in the patient’s current state, if we don’t move him, he’s definitely not going to make it. If we move him for a CT scan and then do surgery later, there may also be accidents along the way, such as massive bleeding during surgery.”
The family members, whose eyes were red and swollen from crying, stared blankly at Lin Ye and asked cautiously, “There’s still a chance that the surgery will be successful, right?”
“Yes.”
Seeing a glimmer of hope, the family members grabbed Lin Ye’s blood-stained sleeve and said, “Do we need to sign? I’ll sign, do the surgery quickly, he’s the sole breadwinner of our family, he can’t have anything happen, he can’t.”
After signing, Tang Feiwai went to wash her face. Lin Ye and another attending physician sent the patient to the CT room. Fortunately, there were no problems, and he safely entered the operating room.
The operating room was just the beginning of the test. During the surgery, the steel bar was removed, and although the chief surgeon clamped the artery and kept stuffing gauze inside, the bleeding still wouldn’t stop.
“Did he donate blood? How many units? Get blood, get blood, his blood pressure is going to crash.” Lu Yuqing was anxiously replenishing the patient’s intravenous line, using both crystalloids and colloids.
For such a life-saving major surgery, there are usually two anesthesiologists. Lu Yuqing was the main anesthesiologist, and the assistant anesthesiologist beside her was also helping to share the workload.
“Quick, push the hemostatic machine over here.” Lu Yuqing said, while looking up at the chief surgeon, “Old Ma, haven’t you found the bleeding point?”
“Found one bleeding point, there should be another one, hold on a little longer.” Chief Surgeon Ma gestured for the circulating nurse to wipe his sweat, and then asked the assistant doctor to flush with saline, aspirate, and finally found the bleeding point, “It’s hidden here, found it!”
After the bleeding stopped, the patient’s vital signs finally slowly stabilized. Lu Yuqing took a deep breath, and the big stone in her heart finally fell.
On the other side, Tang Feiwai, who had only been working for five days, was teased by her colleagues for being a “dragon fruit” constitution. Whenever she was involved in receiving patients, there would be one after another, she was never free. It was almost two in the afternoon when she finally took her lunchbox to the break room to heat up her food.
“Ugh.” The break room was empty, Tang Feiwai comfortably stretched, and opened the lid of her lunchbox.
Two meat dishes and two vegetable dishes, a balanced diet, a sumptuous lunch prepared by Teacher Tang early in the morning for the two doctors. She packed it and brought it to the hospital, and at noon, she would just heat it up in the microwave in the break room.
After eating two chopsticks of cold beef slices, Tang Feiwai savored the lingering aroma in her mouth, and then picked up another chopstick. Just as she was about to open her mouth, Lu Yuqing suddenly appeared, carrying a takeout bag, and sat down next to her.
Tang Feiwai was stunned, the beef stopped in her mouth.
Lu Yuqing was unpacking the takeout, “You eat, I’m just here for company, it’s boring sitting alone.”
“Oh.” Tang Feiwai stuffed the beef into her mouth, buried her head in her food, wanting to finish quickly and escape. Because during her six years with Lin Ye, Lu Yuqing had teased her a lot, calling her “Little Tang Monk,” “Airhead,” “Bookworm,” all nicknames given by the other party.
Lu Yuqing took a sip of soup first and took the initiative to find a topic, “I’ve noticed you talk more than before.”
“Huh?”
“When you were studying, you were completely buried in your books.” Lu Yuqing was a straightforward person, she didn’t want her best friend to get hurt again, so she spoke frankly, “But I don’t care what you want to do after returning to China, don’t go and provoke Lin Ye, she’s very happy now.” In the past five years, after they broke up, although Lin Ye never mentioned Tang Feiwai again, they had been friends for many years, and Lu Yuqing knew that she hadn’t completely let go. It wasn’t until the appearance of Lin Yangyang last year that she saw a long-lost smile on her face again.
“Sister Yuqing, I understand, don’t worry.” Tang Feiwai felt uncomfortable, she forced a smile, “I know Lin Ye has started a family and has a lovely daughter, I will sincerely bless them.” Her lunchbox was not yet empty, but she closed the lid and left the bench, “It’s time for rounds, I’ll go ahead and get busy.”
“Huh? What family? What’s going on?” Lu Yuqing muttered, Tang Feiwai had already walked away. But in less than two minutes, the other party, Lin Ye, arrived.
“Haven’t you eaten yet?” Lu Yuqing asked her.
Lin Ye opened the microwave and put her lunchbox inside, “No, I just finished a meeting, staff rotation within the group.”
Lu Yuqing pulled out the stool for her, “Rotation, who’s coming and who’s going?”
“Wang Can, transferred to group one to follow her graduate advisor, and then a new resident doctor came, a graduate student from our school’s eight-year program.” The Second Affiliated Hospital and the First Affiliated Hospital are both teaching hospitals of Shujiang University Medical School, and students from the eight-year program will first be connected with the two hospitals.
Lu Yuqing clicked her tongue, “A graduate student? You dare to take her without clinical experience? No, it’s not your turn to take her, right? She should go to internal medicine first, and then, even if she comes to the emergency department, she should stay in general internal medicine first, why are you taking her?”
The food was heated, Lin Ye took out her lunchbox, walked to the dining table, sat down on Lu Yuqing’s right side, and then said, “She went to the Department of Internal Medicine on Tuesday, and then she was sent back. The director asked us who wanted her, no one wanted her, so he suggested she go back to continue her research, after all, she’s good at it, maybe she can make a name for herself.”
“So, you want to give her a chance?”
Lin Ye nodded, “Yeah, it’s not easy for girls to study medicine, and it’s even harder to get into a big hospital. Besides, she also wants to try clinical work. Hopefully, she can gain something during her three months in our group and then continue to rotate to other departments.”
“She came on Monday?”
“She can’t stay idle, she came to our department as soon as she received the notice. I’m letting her go to the ward first, get familiar with the resident physicians and nurses.”
Lu Yuqing finished her meal, casually threw the plastic lunchbox into the trash can, and asked, “By the way, did you see Tang Feiwai on the way?”
Lin Ye didn’t look up, “No.”
“She actually thought you married a man and then gave birth to Yangyang.” Lu Yuqing said in a joking tone, “She doesn’t know you at all, that’s why she has this misunderstanding. Someone who came out to her family in the second year of being with her, how could she go back and marry a man?”
“Okay.” Lin Ye swallowed, pretending to be natural, “I’m eating, don’t mention her.” She lowered her head and stared at the food in her lunchbox, her expression becoming increasingly gloomy…
In the afternoon, her luck was amazing. Tang Feiwai finished her shift and went to the parking lot to get her car when the news broadcast just ended. She hadn’t seen her beloved car for two days, she almost forgot where she parked it, she circled around and finally found her motorcycle in the corner. Eager to go home, she carried her bag and strode forward. She had just taken two steps when she caught a glimpse of a car door half-open in front of her.
Shu AWE291, a white Volkswagen Golf, wasn’t that Lin Ye’s car? Tang Feiwai hesitated for a moment, worried that something might have happened to her, she hurried forward, anxiously looking into the car. As far as her eyes could see, the person was leaning back against the seat, her right hand covering her stomach, her face contorted in pain.
Tang Feiwai originally wanted to call her name, but when the words reached her lips, she changed her address, “Lin, Director Lin, are you okay?”
Lin Ye frowned, “My stomach hurts, I’ll be fine after resting.”
“Dysmenorrhea?” Tang Feiwai knew that Lin Ye would also have dysmenorrhea. When they were in college, she often reminded the other party to drink more hot water and used a hot water bottle to warm her stomach.
“Mm.”
“Should I take you home?” Tang Feiwan reached out, intending to unbuckle Lin Ye’s seatbelt, but then hesitated, realizing that as an ex-girlfriend, she had no right to do so. She withdrew her hand and changed her question. “Where are your family members?”
“Hmm?” Lin Ye looked up at her, recalling Lu Yuqing’s cutting words at lunch. Her expression darkened completely.
After a moment, she spoke, calling Tang Feiwan by name three syllables, not “Dr. Tang,” but directly, Tang Feiwan…
