Chapter 21: Teach Her a Lesson
Her words sounded malicious as soon as she spoke.
Her eyes held a mischievous mockery, as if she had come to watch her make a fool of herself.
Song Shengsheng didn’t get along very well with the other neighbors in the military compound. She knew that most of the other families in the compound originally had urban household registrations.
And decent jobs.
They were either kindergarten teachers, hospital nurses, or art workers who danced and sang in the art troupe.
There was really no one like her, who was earthy and shameless, who had squeezed her way in from the countryside.
How she and Fu Cheng got married had already spread throughout the military compound.
Song Shengsheng didn’t want to be laughed at by them, so she said anything to save face: “Fu Cheng came back from a mission, and we hadn’t seen each other for a few days. He was like a cat that had just tasted meat, and he was rough and wouldn’t stop. I couldn’t take it, and crying didn’t help…”
She made up this story without blinking an eye.
The few people nearby blushed!
Song Shengsheng was really from the countryside. She actually said such things! She was really shameless.
Song Shengsheng looked at the wife of Battalion Commander Ding and blinked, deliberately asking, “Sister Zhang, isn’t Battalion Commander Ding like this?”
Song Shengsheng was deliberately poking at her sore spot.
Battalion Commander Ding and his wife had an arranged marriage and had no emotional foundation.
They had been together for so many years, they were just living their lives.
As for the things on the bed, there weren’t many.
When her husband came back, he would complain about being tired, and after dinner and a shower, he would lie in bed and fall asleep. He didn’t have the energy for that.
This was rare.
After giving birth, they had even less of a sex life.
“Shengsheng, what are you saying? I need face, you don’t.”
“Sister Zhang, I consider you my elder sister. We’re all in the same military compound. What’s so embarrassing about this?”
Battalion Commander Ding’s wife didn’t get the better of her and was annoyed.
Song Shengsheng didn’t say anything more to her, “I have something to do, so I’ll go first.”
After she left, she spat, “What could Song Shengsheng have to do? She has no education, no job, and she’s lazy. She’s probably going to cheat.”
The military wives who were close to her echoed her words: “Didn’t her cousin say that Regiment Commander Fu hit her? She probably just wanted to save face and wouldn’t admit it. They’re probably going to get divorced soon.”
“I didn’t see any injuries on her. Her cousin must be wrong. Regiment Commander Fu doesn’t look like the kind of person who would hit his wife.”
Not only would he not hit her, he seemed to love her very much.
“Tsk, clothes cover everything, you can’t see anything.”
“Don’t say it, the clothes she’s wearing today are really nice. The navy blue cotton blouse looks good on her. It’s better than what others wear.”
“She’s always dressed up, I wonder who she’s trying to seduce.”
Battalion Commander Ding’s wife had an idea. Her niece still liked Regiment Commander Fu very much.
She had to keep an eye on Song Shengsheng and catch her red-handed as soon as possible.
Then her niece would have a chance.
Song Shengsheng went out to look for a job all day.
She didn’t want to do any rough work, and she needed connections to get into a factory. As for the supply and marketing cooperatives and state-owned department stores, everyone wanted to go there.
But Song Shengsheng didn’t really care about these.
Although these jobs were respectable now, they wouldn’t be worth much in a few years, a decade or two later.
She wanted to find out how difficult it was to find a job now, and then she would make a decision.
In the evening, Song Shengsheng went to pick up her son from kindergarten. The little boy was now going to school every day with the new schoolbag she had sewn for him.
The quiet and reserved child was showing off to his friends.
“My mom made this new schoolbag for me.”
“I think it’s really nice too.”
“You can look, but you can’t touch it.”
Song Shengsheng heard these words from the kindergarten teacher and couldn’t help but laugh.
Fu Cheng came back earlier than usual today and bought some coal. He piled it up in the yard, neatly arranged.
Thinking about how she had cried in his arms last night, Fu Cheng went to the state-owned department store and bought her a pair of small leather shoes with his commercial voucher.
Eighty-plus yuan, which was several months’ salary for others, was not expensive for Fu Cheng.
When she came to the state-owned department store last time, she had looked at them longingly, but there was no size for her, so she didn’t buy them.
Fu Cheng had studied abroad in his early years. He wasn’t a conservative person. He knew how to coax women.
It was just that he was also angry last night. He just wanted to discipline Song Shengsheng, who was being disobedient, and teach her a lesson so that she wouldn’t dare to say such things again.
But she was stubborn and wouldn’t let him have his way.
Now, Song Shengsheng saw Fu Cheng and remembered the grievances she had suffered last night.
She pretended not to see him. She didn’t act like she had in the past, when she would smile at him and run to him, sweetly calling him “husband.”
