Chapter 8: Turning Around

“That doesn’t change anything.”

Yi Chen’s tone was calm, but Old Yuan could still hear the absoluteness in it. Old Yuan shook his head and said nothing more. He had experienced Yi Chen’s stubbornness before.

“Lawyer He.” Mei Ting entered with an envelope in her hand. “A lady just brought this in.”

Yi Chen knew what it was as soon as he touched it. “Where’s that lady?”

“She left her things and left.”

“Gone?” Yi Chen’s face darkened. “How long ago?”

“Less than a minute.”

Without another thought, Yi Chen grabbed his car keys and coat and headed out.

Old Yuan followed him, calling, “Where are you going?”

But Yi Chen seemed not to hear.At the door, Old Yuan happened to meet Xiang Heng, who had just returned from court.

“What’s wrong with him?”Xiang Heng looked in the direction Yi Chen had left, deep in thought.

“I think I know the reason.”

“You know? Tell me, tell me.”

“I just saw someone downstairs. I thought I was seeing things, but it turned out to be her.”

“Who? Stop keeping us in suspense,” Old Yuan said impatiently.

“What kind of person do you think Yi Chen is?” Xiang Heng asked instead of answering.

“Calm, rational, and objective,” Old Yuan evaluated fairly.

“Then this person is not calm, rational, or objective.”

Old Yuan was curious. “A woman?”

“Yes, his ex-girlfriend.”

Although Xiang Heng was a year senior to Yi Chen, they had lived in the same dormitory, so he knew Yi Chen’s past well.

“Girlfriend?” Old Yuan looked as if he had heard something unbelievable. “He had a girlfriend?”

“Yes. Then she broke up with Yi Chen because she went to the United States.”

“You mean…” Old Yuan’s eyes widened. “Yi Chen was dumped?”

“Yes, and she left without saying goodbye. He only found out about it when she had already gone to the U.S. The incident spread widely in school, and Yi Chen was very depressed for a while. That was when he learned to smoke and drink.”

“No way…” Old Yuan couldn’t imagine what kind of woman would abandon He Yichen. No wonder he didn’t like women—it turned out that once bitten by a snake, he would fear even a rope for ten years.

It was rush hour after work, and Mosheng was in no hurry to go back. She wandered aimlessly with the crowd.Until just now, she had to admit she was really different from before. She would never have retreated like this in the past. She wanted to see him so much, yet she didn’t dare.Back then, no matter how cold and distant Yi Chen was, she could always follow him with a smile. But now, she didn’t even have the courage to say a few words.

Yi Chen had once said that she was his sunshine—the sunshine he couldn’t refuse even if he wanted to. But now, even the sunshine in her own heart had disappeared. What could she use to brighten others?

A silver-white BMW suddenly stopped in front of her. Without looking up, Mosheng walked around it. But then, she heard a familiar voice: “Get in the car.”

She looked up in surprise—it was him!Yi Chen saw her standing there in a daze, frowned, and said again, “You can’t park here. Get in the car.”

Mosheng didn’t have time to think before the car merged into the rush-hour traffic.

“Chinese or Western food?” Yi Chen asked while watching the road ahead.

“Chinese food.” She answered reflexively, then suddenly realized something was wrong. Chinese or Western food? Was he taking her to dinner?Yi Chen glanced at her coldly.

“Can you still use chopsticks?”
