Chapter 8: Severing Ties and Beating the Evil Grandma
Hearing no movement outside, the elders continued to shout, “Aren’t you two coming in? Are you planning to make us come out and get you?”
The clan elders felt that the old Lin family was utterly disgraceful, pretending to be important while having little substance. Their antics, imitating the ways of the city folk, were awkward and embarrassing, creating a scene that was hard to watch.
Today, they had caused quite a stir with the marriage exchange incident, and the elders wondered how it would affect the other girls in the village when it came time for matchmaking.
Thinking about this made the elders want to scare the old Lin family a little.
With the elders’ shouts, the old Lin family—initially reluctant to face reprimand—had no choice but to shuffle inside with dejected expressions. Upon seeing so many clan elders present, their arrogance quickly faded, and they greeted Lin Dayou respectfully.
“We won’t engage in any pretense today. We are here, on Lin Dayou’s behalf, to assist in severing ties between the old Lin family and him,” Lin Taiye, the most senior elder of the clan, said sternly, his sharp eyes locked onto Old Man Lin.
“Sever ties? I object!” Old Lady Lin, who had been the most vocal in criticising Lin Dayou earlier, was the first to jump up.
After forcing Lin Dayou out of the house, the family had abandoned their chores. At her advanced age, she was still toiling in the fields, harboring deep resentment for Lin Wang, whom she blamed for influencing Lin Dayou. Now, with Lin Dayou wanting to sever ties, she was worried about losing the monthly allowance of silver she received, which helped the family.
Not only Old Lady Lin, but even the main branch of the Lin family opposed the idea. Lin Dayou had been giving financial support to the elderly, and they were all benefiting from that. If he cut ties completely, they could forget about their monthly meat allowances.
“You pushed Lin Dayou’s family to the brink yet still have the audacity to object? He loves his little son, who now lies like a living corpse on the bed. This is all due to you!” Lin Zhou Sheng, who was standing to the side, was furious at the shamelessness of the old Lin family and felt like charging in to fight.
“What does his son lying in bed have to do with us? If he had respected his grandmother, none of this would have happened. I reckon this is just retribution for his unfilial behavior,” Lin Daguan, instead of acknowledging any fault, argued that it was actually Lin Dayou’s unfilial actions that had led to his son’s fate.
Driven by anger, Lin Dayou, who had been lying in bed, struggled to get up and shot a furious glare at Lin Daguan.
“Eldest brother, you should have a conscience. Don’t you fear retribution coming back to you?” Lin Dayou’s frustration boiled over whenever others spoke about his child.
“You scoundrel! How dare you curse my precious grandson? Watch me kill you!” Old Lady Lin, hearing Lin Dayou’s retort, transformed into a picture of rage, disregarding the many elders present. She charged at Lin Dayou, throwing punches with all her strength.
Already weakened, Lin Dayou was knocked down to the ground by his mother’s blows. The pent-up anger surged again, but he found no strength to fight back.
“I’ll kill you; you scum! How dare you curse my precious grandson? I’ll beat you to death…” she unleashed cruel blows onto Lin Dayou.
Seeing Old Lady Lin strike in front of them filled the elders with anger, and they yelled vehemently at Old Man Lin, “Old man Lin, you pathetic excuse for a man! Hurry up and pull your wife away; if you don’t stop her now, your son will be beaten to death by you two!”
If Old Lady Lin hadn’t been a woman, they would have already intervened physically.
At this moment, Old Man Lin pretended to be deaf, acting as if he didn’t hear the elders’ admonishments.
They could not allow their precious grandson to be humiliated by Lin Dayou, that scoundrel. He deserved to be beaten to death.
Lin Daguan stood by, indifferent, refusing to step in. He just watched the chaos unfold without a care about anyone’s opinions.
“I’ll kill you! I’ll kill you! How dare you hit my dad?” Suddenly, a figure rushed out of the room and lunged at Old Lady Lin, tiny fists swinging at her with all their might.
Lin Luoxi, who had been in the room erasing the memories of Lin Luoxi’s previous life, heard the tumult outside. After hearing her father was being beaten by his own mother with no one coming to his aid and seeing her damaged family members in the room, she had lost all hope.
The more she listened to the old woman’s taunts, the angrier she felt. No longer pretending to be unconscious, she sprang up from the bed, shoes forgotten, and dashed outside.
Lin Wang and Lin Wenzheng, who were tending to Lin Wentao, were momentarily shocked as they saw the shadow rush past them. By the time they realized what had happened, Lin Luoxi was already gone, and Lin Luoxi’s furious voice echoed outside.
As a medical student, Lin Luoxi knew precisely where to hit to cause the most pain. Lin Dayou’s old mother, who had been triumphantly sitting on him, was now yelping in pain as Lin Luoxi targeted her pressure points.
“Help! Someone, help! This girl is going to kill me!” Old Lady Lin screamed. “Damn it, when did this girl get so strong? It hurts!”
Seeing Lin Luoxi daring to hit his mother in front of everyone made Lin Daguan furious. He rolled up his sleeves and prepared to charge at Lin Luoxi.
“Hey! What are you doing? Weren’t you just lying there like a dead man? How come you’re suddenly ready to fight?” Lin Zhou Sheng exclaimed, disgusted by Lin Daguan’s shamelessness.
Just moments ago, he had wanted to intervene, claiming it was natural for a mother to discipline her son. Now he was being hypocritical.
“Village chief, didn’t you hear my mom screaming for help? That Lin Luoxi is going to kill my mother!” Lin Daguan accused, trying to shift blame.
“Uh, what did you say?” The village chief felt a rising tension; he knew the elders were already angry with Lin Daguan’s family.
“What? Are you hearing what I’m hearing?” The clan elder was furious. It was the first time someone had openly disregarded him, and he felt humiliated.
Now, seeing Lin Dayou’s daughter beating the reckless Old Lady Lin, they couldn’t be more delighted—there was no way they would intervene to stop it.
Lin Daguan realized he couldn’t take on Lin Zhou Sheng or the elders, so all he could do was watch as his own mother was beaten.
Amidst the old woman’s wailing and cries, Lin Dayou lay on the ground, staring blankly at the ceiling, not uttering a single word.
“You damn Lin Luoxi! You’re a worthless brat! How dare you hit me! Just wait; I’ll sell you off!” Old Lady Lin was still unable to grasp the situation, shouting foul words and attempting to flip Lin Luoxi off her.
“Smack! Smack! Smack!” Lin Luoxi, from the 21st century, was not one to be held back by ideals of filial piety. Hearing the torrent of curses from beneath her, she focused her strength on delivering powerful slaps to the old hag’s face.
