Gu Jiaojiao got dressed and went out to wash up, as there was no bathroom in their room.
Although Su Shuoci was paralyzed from the waist down, his hands were very dexterous, and he didn’t need help with tasks like changing clothes. He didn’t need assistance to get out of bed either, and Gu Jiaojiao hadn’t seen how he managed it. The man had a strong sense of pride, and since Gu Jiaojiao hadn’t witnessed it, she felt it would be inappropriate to pry.
Not long after Gu Jiaojiao finished washing up, Su Shuoci also finished and sat down at the dining table. He had changed his clothes, and his hair was wet, suggesting he had taken a shower and washed his hair that morning.
The Su family’s breakfast was lavish: thick, fragrant millet porridge, pickled cucumber strips, store-bought steamed buns, fried dough sticks, and boiled eggs. The eggs had been taken out of Gu Jiaojiao’s space the day before. Gu Jiaojiao ate to her heart’s content, thinking to herself, “This is the kind of life worth living!” The Su family’s sallow faces were lit up with happy smiles, as if they had never eaten so well before.
After breakfast, Su Qinchun rushed to wash the dishes, Su’s father wiped the table, and Su’s mother swept the floor. Gu Jiaojiao looked around but found no chores left for her to do. Once everything was tidied up, Su’s parents went to work, Su Qinchun went to school, and Gu Jiaojiao cleaned up their room.
Thinking that everyone had left for work or school, she decided to take Su Shuoci out to sell rice for some extra money. Gu Jiaojiao took out an electric wheelchair from her space and taught Su Shuoci how to use it. With such a wheelchair, he wouldn’t need anyone to push him around. Su Shuoci merely remarked that divine items were indeed convenient, showing no sign of surprise on his face. This left Gu Jiaojiao feeling somewhat deflated, and she glared at him, muttering, “You don’t appreciate good things.”
Su Shuoci forced a slight smile and said, “Divine items are naturally the best. I know their worth.”
Gu Jiaojiao: “…”
It would have been better if he hadn’t said anything at all.
To avoid drawing attention, Gu Jiaojiao still placed her hand on the wheelchair, intending to avoid the morning rush hour. However, as soon as they turned the corner, they heard a commotion ahead.
“Brother Zijin, why are you treating me like this? Although I truly love you, I dare not accept you. I’m afraid people in the compound will say I’m stealing my sister’s fiancé. Why are you ignoring me? Leaving me to endure cold stares and ridicule at home, and even being forced to… sob…”
Sheng Xinglian was crying her heart out, wiping her tears as she spoke. Her tear-streaked face was enough to evoke pity in any man. Gu Jiaojiao, holding onto Su Shuoci’s wheelchair, stood at the corner watching the scene. “Isn’t it supposed to be the female lead running and the male lead chasing in the books? Why is it the opposite in real life?” she thought.
“I’ve said it before—the engagement is between the two of us. It has nothing to do with Gu Jiaojiao. Why do you keep bringing her up? If you don’t want to marry me, there’s no need to make excuses.”
“Don’t you find it annoying, Lian’er?”
Song Zijin’s tone was calm but firm, his face dark and intimidating. Looking at Sheng Xinglian’s tearful face, his initial thought of giving up on her instantly turned into self-reproach. There was a mysterious force about her that drew him in. Every time he saw Lian’er, he felt exceptionally happy. But when he saw Gu Jiaojiao, he felt as if he had been blind to have ever liked such an unreasonable person. However, after seeing Gu Jiaojiao again yesterday, Song Zijin found himself at a loss. Gu Jiaojiao no longer seemed as detestable to him, and Sheng Xinglian no longer held the same allure.
Song Zijin’s attitude made Sheng Xinglian stop crying abruptly. She widened her eyes, staring at him in shock, unable to believe this was the man she deeply loved. “You didn’t used to talk like this,” she said.
Song Zijin looked at her, a hint of impatience flashing in his eyes. “What do you want me to say? Gu Jiaojiao is already married. Why are you still using her as an excuse?”
“I’m not using her as an excuse. It’s just… brother Zijin, let’s not fight anymore, okay? For you, I’m willing to do anything.” Sheng Xinglian nodded vigorously, as if clutching at her last lifeline, gazing pleadingly at the man she adored. Tears still clung to her delicate face, softening Song Zijin’s heart in an instant.
“Alright, little cat, I’ll take you to school.” The two of them walked off arm in arm.
“Jiaojiao, are you upset?” Su Shuoci asked in a low voice.
Gu Jiaojiao had been watching the pair ahead, while Su Shuoci had been watching her. Seeing her flushed face, he assumed she was upset.
“I’m excited, not upset. They’re the official pair, after all.”
“What’s an official pair?”
Hearing the excitement in his wife’s voice and realizing she wasn’t upset, Su Shuoci felt in a good mood and decided to ask.
“An official pair is, well… let’s put it this way: they’re the most compatible couple in a certain sense. Generally speaking, it refers to two people who have mutual romantic feelings for each other. If one side has unrequited feelings, it doesn’t count.”
“Do divine beings have official pairs too?”
“Of course. As long as two people love each other and end up together, they count as an official pair.” Whether it’s male-male or male-female.
Gu Jiaojiao and Su Shuoci continued chatting and laughing as they appeared on the main road of the compound. Passersby kept their distance, avoiding them, and no one came forward to greet them.
Gu Jiaojiao’s curiosity was piqued. She called Su Shuoci “brother” in front of his parents, but when no one was around, she didn’t bother. “Su Shuoci, do you think these people are avoiding me or you? Generally speaking, if everyone avoids you, it’s either because you’re too outstanding or because you’ve offended everyone.”
She knew she wasn’t outstanding enough to be ostracized by everyone, so it had to be the latter. But in the original host’s memories, she hadn’t offended so many people!
“They’re avoiding me, afraid of catching my bad luck.”
Gu Jiaojiao patted her chest in relief. “If they’re avoiding you, that’s fine. If they were avoiding me, it would still make me uncomfortable.” Although she didn’t care much about others’ opinions, being treated like a plague was still irritating.
“Hahaha… You’re happy that they treat me like a plague?” Su Shuoci laughed heartily at his wife’s adorable reaction, drawing the attention of passersby, who secretly envied them.
“A cripple and a sickly woman can still laugh. Let’s see how long they can keep it up.”
“They have compensation money, and the organization arranged easy, well-paying jobs for Su’s parents. Of course he’s happy.”
“I’d rather eat less and be able to run and jump freely.”
Su Shuoci had excellent hearing and could catch every word, no matter how far away. Now that he had hope of standing again, he didn’t mind the gossip and even repeated it word for word to Gu Jiaojiao.
“These busybodies have too much time on their hands, always talking about us. Let’s see what they say a year from now.”
“Jiaojiao, don’t be angry. With you by my side, even if I never stand again, I’ll be happy.”
“Go away! If you don’t stand up, who’s going to stay by your side?”
